Newbie here - Trying to regain health & strength after surgery

Quote  |  Reply

Hi,

I recently had arthroscopic surgery on my hip (very quick recovery with only 3 tiny scars). Then I had to detox off the opiate pain killer I'd been on for 6 months. IT's a long story involving 3 years of being misdiagnosed and unable to exercise for most of that time. Anyway, I opted to detox in 4 days in the hospital, which was extremely difficult and left me feeling like a wet rag. I lost 10 lbs. which wasn't so bad because I'd gained the 10 lbs from being an inert rag.

My problem is that I have no appetite. My brain isn't telling my I'm hungry and if I didn't force myself to eat, I wouldn't. If someone puts food in front of me I can eat it. But this is really weird.

has anyone ever experienced this problem of no appetitie impulse? I'm thinking it could be from the detox (only 3 weeks since I started). But I feel so weak and I need to rebuild my strength. I'd appreciate some help or thoughts. Thanks!

Hello and welcome to Calorie Count!
Unfortunately, I don't have any experience with what you are going through specifically, but I can tell you that if you have completely lost your appetite than you need to not let that be a guide to your eating right now.
You need to  make sure you eat enough to sustain your body.

You don't have a profile so I don't know much about you.
Age? Height? Weight?
Any info to at least help you determine what you need to eat would be helpful.
At the bare minimum, 1200 calories for a female, and 1500 calories for a male.

I am glad you found this site.
I think you will find the support and encouragement you are looking for.

I don't know how to create a profile? Maybe you can help me with what tab that's under.

I'm almost 50 - 1 month :( -  I'm 5'7" tall and weigh about 123 lbs.

Some other info, I'm one of those lucky people who has never had to diet and has always been thin. So, I'm okay with being back to my old weight (I gained about 15 lbs from sitting around - also the medication game a sweet tooth!)

Before my injury, when I could excerise, I weighed 120lbs and it was toned muscle. Now it's all mush.

My problem is that my hunger instinct is dead. I have to make myself eat. I know that when you're on narcotic pain medications (and I was on one or another for 3 years) it makes you constipated. So maybe the problem is that my body just needs to adjust. My doctor didn't seem too worried about it.

I just wondered if anyone had any thoughts on how to overcome this.

If you go to the Community tab, and then click on People (another tab underneath of community), your info and default picture will come up.
Underneath your default picture (which you don't have one yet; so it appears as a question mark), there is a link that says "edit page".
That is where you create your profile and can go back to edit it as you desire :)

As I said before, unfortunately I don't have much else to offer regarding your sitaution.
I would suggest you look in the Health and Support forum and post in there to see if you find anyone (I am sure there are others) who have experienced what you are going through.)
