"Newleywed Nine"?

Quote  |  Reply

Anyone heard of the "Newlywed Nine"? I read an article on theNest.com talking about how newlyweds tend to gain weight together because the couple feels the need to play "Betty Crocker" and cook full and tasty meals every day. Or it could be the dreaded 'Letting Yourself Go' theory... haha.

Well, I've just been married, and I can see how this would happen. My husband and I have definitely gained a couple pounds in our first two months! I'm not going to let this continue. We've made a pact... hopefully it keeps.

Anyone else experiencing the "Newlywed Nine"?

I wonder if it's because of all the celebrating.  I got married in December and we're still having celebrations.  I haven't experienced weight gain though because I've been counting, but I could easily see how that'd happen.

I'm not sure about Betty Crocker - nothing wrong with cooking good food is there? - but one common little pitfall to avoid is not to dish up equal size portions!  Men need more food than women... annoying but true.   Serve yourself about half what your husband eats... Otherwise they stay beautifully slim and you find you're 20lbs heavier by your first anniversary... Smile

Maybe it has something to do with the crash diets that people tend to go on to fit into a too-small dress. Lose weight fast = gain it back fast.

I think it happens because people are happy and comfortable.

When my boyfriend and I moved in toghther we both gained weight. But i figure when we get married in may that prob. wont happen since it already did...?

I just got married as well (August 08) and my husband and I were aware of that possible weight gain. At first we were walking each other down the path of destruction, haha. But we quickly realized that it's easier to melt of 2lb than 5 or 10. So we just switch out a few ingredients: white pastas for whole wheat pastas, normal cheese for light cheese, whole grain breads for white breads and ice cream for sorbet. Also, we have what we call "man food" which are his pizzas and carb heavy meals (lasagna, meatball subs, etc) that for some reason don't seem to affect their hips as much.

Good luck!

yep...mine was 15.  I finally realized it last september (about a year and a half after getting married) and my husband did too.  We both lost it all by christmas!  (for me it was thanks to this site, for him it was thanks to me not eating junk foods anymore, once they weren't in the house anymore he didn't eat them).

it was true for me! (and then some..)

I lost a bunch for the wedding.. then gained back to my starting weight. I can see how it could happen though... my husband can eat whatever he wants and burns it off.. he's a contractor! I sit and read medical journals and type all day.. not the same!!! lol. I feel like homecooking is obvioulsy better though... especially when he's not in the kitchen and i can substitue butter with i can't believe it's NOT butter... lol.
