A newly found calorie torcher - jumping rope!

I have read that just 10 minutes of jumping rope burns around 100 calories or more.  I thought, "Wow! 100 calories gone in only 10 minutes??? I gotta try!"

And oh man was it harder than I thought!  I had to rest for a few seconds every 30 seconds or so.  My legs and bottoms of my feet were on fire!!  My legs, thighs, and calfs are sore today from that 30 minute workout.  Just wanted to share my experience with you guys!

congrats on trying something new. i too jump rope from time to time and it's hard but its a great workout! keep it up, you'll see results for sure!
I discovered the jump rope a few months ago, and I've been doing it at least 3-4 times a week for 25-30 minutes. When I began, my feet and legs (calves especially) were killing me, but it has really worked wonders for my derriere (at least I attribute it to that!). And yes, it does get easier and less painful over time. I went from looking like a dork to having someone come up to me and asking me, in so many words, how I got to be so good (read: look like less of a dork). And yes, you can't beat the calories burned in such a short workout. I still rest after 45-60 seconds of jumping, but as long as my heart rate is up and I'm burning calories, I don't think it matters much.
I was just thinking about getting a jumrope this morning and here is a post!  Now I am gonna have to give it a try.  Thanks for the motivation.

Keep it up the good work, I have been working out with my rope for last 7/8 weeks, and I would have to agree with spjesq, it works wonders around the the butt/hip/thigh area.

I use to spend 45 min on the machines and for months I would not feel any difference.  The rope is unbelieveable, with amazing results. 

I usually start my skipping first, and I do 10 sets of 100, breaking each set down  by 50/50 or 60/40; I usually do six sets first 6x100=600, then I move on to other excerises, next I will do my last sets of 4x100=400; before I know I have reached my 1000.

at first you should pace yourself, and don't worry if you foot stops the rope, just keep jumping.

Yesterday, was a greate example, I was motivated, but when I thought about the 10 sets I started, but I was just ploughing through, then a young man came in and was just flying with his rope, we chatted and he gave me some advice, which was go as fast as you can to increase your intensity.  I took his advice, and before I knew the sweat was just pouring off me.  Not too mention I was able to finsh my set earlier.

I wish I had started the rope much sooner, but never too late to start.

i'm just wondering if you guys jump with both feet together or ddo you do like a kind of jogging movement? like one foot at a time hop,/skip step?
Is it true that when you jump you should not jump on the spot because its bad for your heart?
cool ... so what would a workout look like with a jump rope? so many of you are saying that for you you saw a noticeable difference faster than with the elyptical or treadmill??? I have been very frustrated with my workouts of late I either do the elyptical or  I run/jog on the treadmill and I havent seen much difference ... I really only see a difference when I add in resistance training but then I don't lose a lot of weight i just look tighter. 
stephanie14: I used to jump with both feet together, but as I got more coordinated, I switched to more of a boxer's shuffle. It seems to be a bit easier on the legs, and I can jump longer and faster.

myselfskinny: I don't really have a set workout with the jump rope, but dillon65's routine looks pretty cool. I just usually pick a few up-tempo songs from my playlist (I mentioned elsewhere in the forums that P!nk's "U + Ur Hand" and Kelly Clarkson's "Never Again" are excellent songs to jump rope to) and jump rope for 20-25 minutes, with rests of 30 seconds or so between jumps. Chances are, if you've been frustrated with your workout results lately, then the addition of the jump rope will help you through it. Everyone's body is different, I know, but it worked for me.
Did the jump roping do anything for your upper body...arms or anything?
albob22: I can't say that I noticed a drastic change in the upper body. Ideally, there's minimal movement with the arms when jumping, since the rope spinning should come from the wrists. I think most of my upper body definition has come from strength training.

Yes, I was told that the jump rope, tones your arms, I am female, so I notice a difference with my chest area, my upper body has always been small, I have not notice the arms and shoulder blade areas.

I would suggest you purchase a resistance band, if you want to really tone, at the end of the day it is better to go against your body weight.

tomorrow is my gym day, and now that I realise the faster the better, I up for it.  At the moment I am trying to the the boxers fancy foot work, but I usually practise on my last set of 50

I purchased a pair of nylon tracks pants, nylon is tight on the human flesh, but now I feel the difference so much I think I have messed myself (laugh!)

Jumping rope is an overal body empowerment, not just upper body.  Skipping without music is insane, don't do it!

you can do it, it takes work and dedication, use a journal and see for yourself.
