Newlywed Weight Gain

Quote  |  Reply

I've been married for a year and have found it more difficult to lose or maintain my weight this year than when I lived by myself. I think a recent study in the news confirmed that couples living together weigh more than those who live alone. This has been true for me this year. I don't want to have seperate meals from my husband since we enjoy cooking together - but anyone have some ideas/suggestions how to eat healthy with your partner (especially when he loves carbs and I can't pack on those calories like he can). Thanks!

Kathy

My boyfriend and I started living together about a year ago and I feel your pain!  It is way to easy to snack on the little candies he brings home or mimic his portion sizes.  If you and your husband are making fairly healthy meals you should be able to eat the same things as him just not as much.  A trick I use is making the same meal w/ a few simple variations to my plate.  For example if we are having a pasta w/ a marinara sauce (the boys favorite) I skip the cheese and opt for a single serving of pasta with extra veggies thrown in.  If I still feel hungry when I have finished whats on my plate I toss together a quick spinach salad (a staple in our fridge) instead of going for seconds.

Hope that helps!

I can also feel your pain. My husband is a great cook  but loves to pour on the oil and toss in some nuts- turning a light dinner at home in to 800 calories. Not to mention that now there is someone to share desert with.

Good news: Men love to fix things! So I make him part of my diet and include him on my goals. Also it sounds silly but I use a smaller plate than he does- Then on weekends we try to make stay active. Bike riding. Hiking. Long walk on the beach.

Good luck!

I was just married 6 months ago, and I'm already beginning to see troublesome weight gain! I started baking and cooking more to practice my skills, but because of all these goodies, I have been overeating despite my exercise!

I've started making healthier dinners, stopped baking as often (except for special occassions), and limit eating out to one day of the week. I also only allow myself ONE very small treat during the day. My goals is to lose five pounds, so I think we're all in the same boat!

Also, I agree with the small plate idea. Smaller plates mean smaller portions, and the same goes for jumbo bowls vs. tinier ones! :)
