Weight Gain
Moderators: chrissy1988, positivelinny, nycgirl, lalabanana

hey everyone,

in the past couple of weeks i have gone from a severly low calorie intake up to now about 1800 cals only since of yesterday, before that it was 1500 for about 5 days,i have been increasing 200-300 every 3-5 days, i know a bit tooo slow, but i have been struggling.  i am at a bmi in the range of 12 and am trying to gain at home without in-patient, although my doc did say if by this Friday like in 2 days i dont put on at least 1/2 a pound then she is sending me to the ER, because obviously my weight is at a dangerous place, and also i have been maintaining or loosing a bit since i upped my calories at the beginning of this month.

well my question: i know from going to IP 3 times, that night sweats are a sign that your metabolism is working and speeding up, i didnt get them at all until just last night after eating 1800 calories. does this mean that i am gaining? loosing? my metabolism is going into overdrive and burning off the calories? i just am confused, is this a sign that i mantain on about 1800 now idk well any feedback would be great, please know that i am very motivated to gain weight, and get healthy, and keep moving forward, and i do know i would probably need 2500 or more to gain, just wondering if the night sweat/hot flashes last night were a sign that i am loosing because i dont want to loose, IP=hell.

When you eat food the body processes it and turns it into energy.  This generates heat.  Mammals need to eat regularly to stay warm.  Cold-blooded reptiles can eat once in a blue moon because they don't need to stay warm.  Anorexics are notoriously cold all the time because they don't eat.  Your body also has to heal and repair... this takes more work.  So I suspect part of what you're feeling is caused by the work your body is doing processing food, using the extra energy and repairing damage.

Some people in your situation find their metabolism does speed up incredibly quickly and 1500-1800 is still a very light diet - hence why you're maintaining and/or losing rather than gaining.   You're using all 1800 very rapidly & you're going to need 2500 minimum to gain regularly.... and I really do mean minimum.  If lalabanana was still here she'd tell you that she needed 3500-4000 to gain  - and I think she was at a very low weight

Talk to your doctor about all of this and ask their advice. Never guess or even use message boards to get your information.  Your health is in a really precarious state at the moment and you need to be led through the process carefully if you're to come out of the other side with as little permanent damage as possible.

Ah the night sweats I remember them well!, to me, when they happened, i was like-yea!i must be doing something right now!. Its your body metablosing, repairing, working again, its a good thing, pleeeeeaaasssssseeeeee, keep going. I have seen u on this site before, and Im sure your sick of everyone saying that you are so physically unwell, adn the only way to get better is to EAT!. If you do that, then your brain will have the space to focus on the other areas of your ed. Doesnt matter what, where, how, just do it. Please. Im actually nearly jumping through the computer screen to help u here!"!.xxxxxxx

I have read your blogs and seen your posts on here. I am concerned for you and your sister. You are at such a dangerous spot. You guys remind me of the situation I was in before I went into the cardiac unit at your age. My docs were saying the same thing and I was making small progress but it was not enough. You know what to do but you need to do it. You know from being at Renfrew being at 1800 would be the 2nd day there no matter how low you were eating before. The end result is to reach a normal weight once you get there you will maintain and it won't go for ever. You may have to accept a bmi of 20 or 21 etc but it is about full health to recover. I think more you guys not wanting to go ip is so that you don't have to gain fully and eat the food they ask which is very healthy but with treats but unsafe to you. You guys deserve more and I know from your blog you could not start school etc from being sick. I wonder on some level if that is what you want to not have to do these things but in the long run it keeps you trapped. Do you want to be in the same place 10 years from now? In my last ip after many they said to me when you leave you need to do everything different then when you came. Not just food issues but things like school, job, social etc. It is true and so scary but in the long run makes life better. In my eyes you have bene given too long op to do this and need some type of hospital. I am not so for ip residential because long term I don't see huge benefits but I am for hospitals to refeed and get to a better physical place so mentally you can get there as well

You posted in August saying you had a BMI of 13.6, so since then you have lost even more weight. Clearly this is unsustainable and you are risking your life.

You need to be in hospital, not on a public internet forum.

Please seek some real help in the real world; preferably separate from your sister as it seems apparent to me that you keep each other sick.

The only reason IP is hell for you is that you haven't committed to recovery. You need to change your mind about that - I'm scared that you will die if you are not hospitalised soon.

Promotion of starvation diets or habits that exhibit signs of an eating disorder ("pro-ana", "pro-mia", etc.) is prohibited.

I would definitely speak to your treatment team about what you are experiencing I really feel for your health to .please if you are in any doubt you cant do this at home take ip treatment , you arnt at the point where you can put it off  being the bmi you are your life is in danger please take care h x
