you should not be excercising if you are trying to gain weight until you are at a healthy weight. This means your BMI should be around 20. Once you get to this point you can add in resistance training to gain muscle mass. Ths would include push ups, situps, pullups, weight lifting, etc. Cardio is the LAST thing you want to do when gaining. It will not help you at all. If you feel like you want some activity now i would just sugest yoga and stretches. If you are doing any excercises you MUST eat back the calories you burned off plus more. This means if you are eating the minimum of 2500 then you would have to up to around 3200 or so depending on the activities you choose.
what are your stats? are you recovering from an ED? what kind of exercise are you interested in? how intense is it? how often are you planning on exercising? all of these things are important!! like summerlovin said, you MUST eat back your calories when you are trying to gain or else you will never reach your goals. also, you want to be careful of using exercise to compensate for the increased intake if fear is your impetus for wanting to begin exercising, it's easy to replace one bad behavior with another, and in the case of people who want to gain, exercise can be a form of bulimia to purge excess calories. i don't know your situation but you really need to be careful with incorporating exercise. I too wanted to begin an exercise regimen while gaining but quickly realized that it was too difficult to eat the calories that i was burning and it was too hard to count the burn, calories in, etc. so, it's ultimately your choice but is really not recommended. hope this helps! your stats would be nice if you want more specific information!!
I'm slowly introducing more calories back into my diet. I used to consume about 600-900 a day and it's about my third day and I'm at 1,500 so far. I'm just interested in general exercise like walking on the treadmill and gym class. Like, am I not allowed to run in gym class?
Depending on what your BMI is, you probably shouldn't run in gym class. When I went into treatment they made me quit my retail job in which I was on my feet the whole shift. =( Have you seen a GP or nutritionist regarding your gain? They'll be able to advise you more thoroughly.

this early in recovery exercise is definitely not recommended. mentally and physically it's not advisable. it's likely that you might fall into using exercise to compensate for the increased calories and undermine your goals so just avoid that. good luck hun and i'm here to talk and help you through it if you need it :)
yeah you probably shouldnt run in gym class. For me when i was first starting, in gym when we had to run the mile or do the paser i told the gym teachers i wanted to go to the clinic and they said okay and i would wait there till class was almost over because i didnt want everyone making a huge deal over everything. So that was my strategy and i still am getting out of the mile and stuff but i have to do like reports to make up for it :/ but its my healthy and your health too
I highly recommend stretching every day - it doesn’t burn significant calories and it makes you feel longer and leaner and is great for your muscles and it helps prevent injury.
Stretching helps me to feel good about my body, it feels good physically too.
The ONLY form of exercise I would recommend is doing a little abdominal/core work because having a strong midsection helps to support your back and it helps you to hold yourself more comfortably and to feel good about your body - it made a huge different once I started doing a little abdominal work.
The abdominal work won’t burn enough calories to hinder your weight gain, and it will make you feel better and stronger within your body and only 2 - 5 minutes most days is enough to feel better.
I can send you a couple of exercises for the deep abdominal muscles as well as a basic crunch - I have pictures of them all so you know exactly what you should be doing! There are also some stretches I have too, let me know if your interested.
Obviously sitting in the same spot all day won't feel good but simply moving into different rooms every hour, not staying in the same spot for over an hour, and doing a little abdominal work and stretches most days should have you feeling active enough without burning too many calories!
Excercise and a low weight especially if it is the cause from an ed don't mix in my eyes and how I ended up in my first cardiac unit at 19. Your heart can't take that and there is plenty time ahead to enjoy more activity when at a healthy weight. I know programs I have been in they have allowed light and I mean light walking, yoga, pilates. Yoga if you can get into can have a great healing process for the mind to aid in recovery.
Exercising at a low weight has left me with arthritic pains and complications. If I were you I'd stop now. If you have to talk to your Phys Ed teacher so be it.
