Weight Loss
Moderators: duke3522, devilish_patsy, topanga1485, nycgirl, spoiled_candy, cmillington, coach_k Normal BMI, but I wish I was thinner?who can relate?
I?m a teen, 5?8, who weighs 133 pounds. I know that I?m not ?fat?, but ever since I came out of a massive growth spurt throughout my teen years I?ve been putting on weight gradually. I barely noticed until I grew out of a favourite pair of jeans and couldn?t stand the way I looked in my new ones (I hate my thighs!). Ever since then I?ve been obsessing about it and trying to change my eating habits, and exercising, and everything. I thought I?d been doing okay but the weight is coming off so slowly (I?ve only lost 4 pounds!), and all the stuff I find on the internet is aimed at people looking to lose a lot of weight, so I can?t find much helpful information.
Can anyone relate? Any tips/suggestions?

hey! i relate. haha.
i'm 5'7" and around 125. keep in mind ur scale is probably off :) i always like to keep that in mind..that way i only use the scale to track my progress.
but yeah i have a "normal" BMI of 19.6 but my thighs are the bain of my existence lol..i hate them! and so yeah i wish i was thinner too :(
i'd probably be the last person to ask for suggestions as i'm prone to ED tendencies and i dont wanna pass that on to anyone else lol...but if you poke around c-c you should be able to find some good healthy tips :)

Maybe I'm wrong, but to me it sounds like you're getting hips... I still feel the same way (I am 5'4 and weighed in at 112 this morning). Darn child-bearing hips!
Yeah, that's what I was wondering - is it bones & muscles that are developing into womanhood or is it fat? Womanhood curves are nice... no?
I can relate - I started tracking the number of calories per day that I was eating - I was appalled! Now I am so much more aware, and am making better choices for my total caloric intake. Keep up on the cardio, too. That will help, good luck!!
*sigh* I am so grieved to see you (and all others) who are young, slender and still hate body parts because they seem out of proportion to you. I can totally relate because no matter how small I became in my teens and early 20's - I hated my thighs. In fact I made up a joke about them...
"When God was making me, he asked me "what size of thighs?" and I thought he said "fries" so I said 'I'll take extra large!'"
Hope you laughed... because one day when you are older and more comfortable with yourself and your body... you'll realize your thighs are beautiful.
Please, please - as you try to diet to change your thighs.. remember that sometimes God just makes them bigger because big is also beautiful.
By the way - my big thighs didn't seem to be a bit of a problem to any guy I dated. I was not the most beautiful of women in college, but I had a date anytime I wanted one.... you'll be the same.

I can...but I have ED tendancies, so I don't know how much my opinion really counts if it's the disorder talking. I've been trying to get my BMI down to around 16.5, which I realize is emaciated. Currently I'm at 17.3...maybe a little less this morning, I'll probably check later.
But the honest to g-d truth is that I look a lot better at a higher way. My boyfriend always mentions a picture from freshmen year when I was healthier (not completely healthy, but healthIER) . Not being cocky, but I was gorgeous. I was healthy and tan and my boobs were...you get the point. A picture taken exactly a year later was awful, my skin was pale, I had bags under my eyes, basically I looked really sick.
So my suggestion is not to lose more weight, if you are healthy that's all that matters

hey i have exactly the same weight height as you and i feel the same..i hate my stomach but i am learning to live with it..to be honest everyone has bits about themselves they dislike and we should feel lucky that we are not morbidly obese or something and i am just trying to tone up the healthy way and you will benefit in the long run! get in touch if you wanna chat! :)
I used to feel that way. I was SO skinny as a kid (weight 78 lbs until I was 12) and then puberty hit like a brick wall and it was like "oh crap, I'm getting fat!"
Give it time. For I while I still had "baby fat" my legs seemed disproportionately big, I had huge hips and yet no boobs to speak of....you need time to "grow into" your body. Just because you're done growing "up" doesn't mean that the way your body is shaped won't shift and change. Geez, I didn't really get boobs until I was 21 (although I realize that's weird) and my body didn't finally finish re-shaping itself until I was 24-ish. Don't worry; things will distribute nicely, just give it time. And don't forget that every single other girl your age feels the exact same way. We all have our awkward teenage phase. Mine was horrid; I looked terrible, but it passed. Yours will too.
That, and the others posting in here about "being comfortable with your body" are right. Once you're comfortable in your skin, people will notice. Don't be fooled by fashion magazines - guys like hips...and boobs...and butts...these are all assets that the "super skinny" don't have. And confidence is the sexiest thing you can have going for you. When I was 20, I hung out with this girl who was probably 20-30lbs heavier than me (and I wasn't super-skinny either) but she carried herself like she owned the world and nothing could stop her. Guys practically worshipped her and I was always jealous. I realized at about 24 that it was all about the confidence, and it's definitely true. After finding confidence in the fact that I WAS gorgeous and I WAS sexy, I spent a good 8 months single and playing the casual dating game, and the confidence thing was foolproof. So much so that it was kind of a power-trip.
Don't worry; you'll get there. Be patient. When you get older you'll look back and wish you weren't so pre-occupied with how other people see you anyway. Have fun. Try not to care so much what other people think. Most people are idiots anyway :)

no matter how thin you get, your waist-to-hip ratio and all other ratios will stay the same, and that's not a bad thing! If you're obsessing about your thighs then you should focus on toning them up. Put time aside in your schedule to do squats or lunges. I love getting exercises from magazines then doing them while I watch TV or a movie. You'll also be less stressed about eating and counting calories because eating more will actually help the muscles develop. Good luck, and don't forget to set a goal for yourself. Once you fit into your favorite pants again, stop there. You're already healthy and you look great.
I think its really the society's problem that young girls who are not fat at all start to think about losing weight or complain about their bodies....
I really hate the fact but i am in the group as well....and to make things worse i have ED problem too...feel guilty when i eat food and once i begin to eat..there's no stopping me.........(tears.....)

haha u guys are really sweet.
personally....honestly i can't do the whole "big is beautiful too" thing when i look at my thighs. i have my tastes. and i simply don't like them. it's not going to change. there's not even THAT much fat on them...just enough that losing it would make a difference to their size...but there's no like cellulite or antyhing.
and thanks but the LAST thing i want to do is lunges. that's just asking for big thigh muscles. i like long, thin, and lean and toned. i'm not into the somewhat bulky, super toned look you see in the girls who do the bowflex commercials...that just grosses me out. haha. sorry...i hope i'm not offending anyone. just not my taste.
i miss my ballerina thighs :(

Don't we all! I didn't read what anybody else wrote -- I'm probably repeating -- but when you're already thin, a few pounds here and there really DON'T make a difference. People aren't going to treat you any different ... essentially life is not going to be any different, so try not to sweat it. Being popular and getting noticed is all about your CONFIDENCE -- honest to God, it IS! Try to concentrate less on your body and more on your personality and see what happens! Give it a try -- can't hurt! Be friendlier, give compliments, SMILE ... !
I'm SURE what you're experiencing is NORMAL GROWTH and development. As a teen/young person, you're normally straight up and down; when you get older and more developed you get the womanly shape -- more curves. Believe me, I HATE when my jeans feel tight in the thighs -- makes me feel HUGE, but you know what? I exercise and it's probably just MUSCLE. It's all in our heads and it's a game we play with ourselves, this whole "fat thing." Now if I could only remember this when I'm feeling fat. :)
I shop in both the "junior" department and the "misses" department -- I'm 36. In the junior dept I wear LARGER sizes than when I'm in the misses -- that's because they make those juniors clothes for those little iddy biddy juniors that have NO shape! It's a good thing to realize because otherwise it could make a girl feel FAT!

I'm 37, and I am also at my normal BMI range but BMI is not an accurate way to determine body composition! You should focus on how your clothes feel and try to feel comfortable in them. They are more of an accurate indication of where you're at. We all have a pair of skinny jeans lurking in the closet that we wish we could get into. Use them as your goal and use the numbers as a guide. I will not let myself get into the underweight BMI because its unhealthy and hurts my body.
I shop in juniors and misses, to be honest misses pants fit me better. I am a woman and I have a butt and thighs! They make me have curves and they allow me to do yoga and walk my dogs and fill out my pants and look like a woman. Once in a while the junior jeans fit well, but I know that they are designed for someone 20 years my junior. Curves are good and sexy.
Lunges won't make your thighs big if you keep the reps high by assisting the movement with a chair or countertop. It is the best toning method for legs besides brisk walking.

If you're not happy about your body and you are a normal BMI, then it's time for you to start to exercise and eat MORE not LESS!
If you want to fit into that pair of jeans or get rid of your flabby thighs it won't work if you go on a diet, diets only work for people who are OVERWEIGHT. For those of you who are at a normal BMI or underweight.. try exercise.
Remember, if you are at a normal BMI and go on a diet, you will be losing more muscle than fat and you will STILL have flabby thighs even if you are 80 freaking pounds...
