Is it normal to feel awkward when first trying to run?
Asked by grayeyeskb on Jun 25, 2009 in Fitness

I learned that it's important to vary the speed I move when I'm on my daily walk, and so I have started to run a block once in a while to increase my heart rate.  Is it normal to feel so awkward and will it get easier? I am 55 and in good health.

Answer

It always feels weird to do something new, but you might feel better if you add more structure.  This beginner’s running program is structured around time to alternate walking with jogging.  Workouts are also structured around heart rate monitor readings, jogging when the rate falls below 65% and walking when it climbs above 85%.  Don't forget to track your progress, which adds structure too.  Running clubs are famous for getting runners started.  The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society has the Team In Training® program to place walkers and runners together for companionship and support.  Also consider joining the Calorie Count Group, Running, for friendly advice.  It will get easier.
