Is this a normal heart rate?

Quote  |  Reply

I have two questions, both concerning my heart beat. I'm thirteen years old, almost fourteen. I'm 5'4", bmi ~18 (which I guess is bad). I am trying to gain weight right now.

One, my resting heart rate is just about 60 bpm. We did an activity in school earlier, and everybody's heart rate was faster than mine. Some people heard about mine and said theirs were much higher. Even after running a few laps and retesting our heart rates, mines was below everyone else's. Is this...normal? Is it bad?I heard that at my age, heart rates can still vary, but I'm pretty sure it's weird if my rate is below EVERYONE'S.

Also, if I put my hand onto my chest to feel my heartbeat (even though I usually just check my pulse on my neck) I can feel two sets of thumps. Obviously I don't think I have two hearts, but is it normal that I feel the THUMP-thump. THUMP-thump? Actually, sometimes I don't even feel a heartbeat when I put my hand there, but sometimes I feel the THUMP-thump clearly.

The heart has two main parts, one which pumps the blood in, and one which pumps the blood out.  That's what causes the THUMP-thump sound.

It's okay for you to have a low heart rate; for some people, that's just how it is, particularly if you're very athletic.

A normal weight range for your height is between 100-130 pounds, with about 115 being best.

Just be sure to eat lots of fruits and veggies, as always.  Milk and nuts are also good for you.  If you're still concerned ask your doctor about it next time you visit.

For adults and teens, a heart rate between 60 and 100 beats per minute is considered normal.  However, those who are in good shape often have resting heart rates that are lower than this.

Alright, thank you! It's just that I read another thread where somebody was advised to eat more if their heart rate was under 60, and mine is just about.
