Is it normal to loose so much so fast???

Quote  |  Reply

Hi sorry to bother everyone, BUT I am loosing as I think very fast is this normal or am I doing something wrong.

I am 36 F, needing to loose 110 pounds, I am 5'10 I average between 1500-1800 calories a day....I do very light excercise i do like 15minutes of  callestetics and 10 minutes on a bike or elliptical every second day. Other than going to the grocery store and cleaning house and walking my son to school that is all I do. Should the weight be dropping this fast please advice.....

Thank you so much,

Barbara

Oh and I drink between 9-12  glasses of water each day!!

If you'd let us know how much you're losing, so we would know, it would help. I don't know if you are losing 2lbs/week or 15!

I second that!  We need to know how much you are actually losing!

That being said, it is fairly normal to lose up to 8 lbs or so the first week, especially if you are going from being sedentary to adding in activity, and cutting out things like soda and dessert.  Those calories add up very very quickly.  Your weightloss should stabilize to 1-3 lbs per week after the first few (up to 3 or so) weeks until you get closer to a normal weight and then will be closer to 1 lb, sometimes 2 lbs per week.  Silly bodies!

Take the nice loss as a motivational factor that you are doing things the right way!

I started on cc january 3 2008....and i have lost 11.2 pounds as of today...So I guess it has been 17 days . I guess it just didn't seem like it has been that long cause I have had no set backs and people always talk about set backs ....so it averages out to be almost 3 pounds a week....I guess that is not as bad as I thought it was ...it just seems everyday i weigh in I am loosing...I will take that and smile and keep going the way i am going it seems to be working....Thank you so much :)

Cheers,

Barbara

That is indeed not too bad, I would be shocked if you would have averaged 5 lbs each week or so, but this is quite nice, also mostly in the beginning you tend to lose faster, enjoy while you can, it will slow down soon enough probably.
You're doing just fine. Weight loss generally slows down after you lose the first 20 pounds or so, even if you're a larger person... my weight was dropping like billy-o until christmas and it's slowed right down this month alas...
My weight loss always seems to go the fastest the first few weeks.  Don't start beating yourself up if it slows down some.  Just think of it as nature trying to give you a boost to remind you that it is worth it in the beginning.

I lost about 30 pounds from June to October. With losing 30 pounds in 4 months I've lost my period and I have yet to get it since September. I definitely think I lost too much weight too fast, so I definitely think losing in a short amount of time isn't the best thing to do. It's hard though, everyone wants quick results and I definitely know what it feels like to see a huge drop in your weight. It feels good, but it might not be the best for your health.

the pace you are going at now is great.  once your body hits a certain mark you are going to have to do more intense workouts to burn the calories off.  so you should get into the habit of excerising more.

loose loose loose - loose as a goose

lose lose lose - you snooze, you lose

Cool

I lost the same amount of weight in the same time frame as you. I did not lose my period. It may have been your bodies reaction to such a drop.

OP losing that much in the beginning is not unheard of. Usually tho it tapers off to a slower lose about 1-2lb per week. But don't get discouraged tho even if it slows. It will still be coming off just at a slower rate.

Thank you all I appreciate everyone's insight on this...i have added in a bike for 15 minutes a day so I will just keep going the way I am ...again thank you very much for all your advice....

cheers,

It's perfectly fine to lose so much in the beginning when you're first starting a diet.  Much of the initial weight loss that people see is water weight (most people significantly reduce their sodium intake--whether they realize it or not--when they start eating healthier, which is what caused them to hold on to so much water in the first place).  I've personally lost 5 lbs overnight due to this effect.  If this rate of weight loss continues for more than two weeks or so, then I'd be very concerned.

Micro is right on one point, that the very initial stages are often water weight, but keeping it up for nearly 3 weeks is not simply water coming off your body.

With that said, you're perfectly fine losing that much weight that quickly. If you've got 110 lbs to lose,  you're carrying around a lot of extra mass and are actually burning much more than the average person throughout any given day, hence your deficit is probably larger than you realize.

It will indeed slow down though, however, don't be discouraged...as it actually should be very encouraging. The slow in weight loss in your situation will indicate that you've lost a lot and your body is no longer working in overdrive. This is a good thing.
