Is this normal for a 13 year old?

Quote  |  Reply

Okay, I'm 5"3' 115-120 lbs. and my measurments are (top to bottom) 34, 26,37. I hate my figure and my genes. In 4th  grade I was the only girl with hips, but I was chuncky. I also think I'm very out of proportion. My feet are long and skinny, and so are my arms, fingers, and (I'm told) my legs.  I mean, my mom is 5"4' and my dad is 5"7', so they're both short. Although, my grandpa on my mom's side is 6"2', and my grandparents, aunt and uncle on my dad's side are all tall. Will I be tall? They also have.. "developed chests", so does that mean I will get it? I mean so far my fat goes straight to my hips, butt, and, if I'm lucky, chest.

Does anyone have any advice? I think I might have BDD (body dismorphic disorder) but I'm not sure.Frown

Hey hon - sorry, we can't see your pic, it needs permission - However, my 12 year old has very similar measurements (though she's just a little taller).  She is not by any means fat, not even a little chunky.  She's just going to be one of those "hippy" (or pear shaped) girls.

Even puting you in the Kids BMI tool at 120 lbs, you would have BMI of 21.3 (right in the middle of the healthy range) and which places you in the 77th percentile (average).

Also, keep in mind, you are still smack dab in the middle of puberty - you could grow a couple more inches, and your proportions could even out still, too.

You are right in the middle of puberty! Your body is still growing and changing, so I wouldn't stress it too much.

i deffinitly agree with the person above me. I was always really chunky when I was younger. When I was your age I was 135lbs and about the same height as you.

Now I'm 18, 2 inches taller, and 25lbs lighter. You just gotta let your body grow into itself. And don't eat any less than you should because you will have a lot of health issues in the future if youre not getting proper nutrition!

Your numbers and measurements sound completely healthy and normal for your age.

No one can predict if you will be tall, but the best way to become tall is to eat a healthy and balanced diet now! Going on some silly crash diet could certainly stunt your growth.

And while it's completely normal for a teen girl to feel uncomfortable about her looks, if you think you have BDD please talk to your mom or some other adult about these feelings.

I think I grew until sophomore year of college. So yes, you will probably grow more.

Not to sound too crude but at age of 13, don't worry about your weight or measurement so much. They are bound to change as your body goes through puberty and mature.

Dont stress at all. It's just a phase. During junior high and early high school I couldnt squeeze into my favorite jeans anymore. I held onto them though and now they go on without a problem! The girls body just does funky things while straightening out and we have to live with it for those years. Dont dwell on it though, I'm about your height and weight and its not fat. :)

I think you are just fine! When I was 13 or 14, I was about almost 5' 3"...more so 5' 2" and guess what? I weighed about 115 to 120. And of course I thought I was fat. I had a butt, some thighs, and always a little belly. But that was my body shape. And looking back on it, I realize how silly I was being with my insecurity! But I was healthy, and just fine! So I think you are fine too! Ok? ^_^

I agree. And don't be so concerned with the scale. Just make sure you stay active, and you will be fine. The only time I ever looked at a scale at the age was at the Doctor's office. You are totally healthy! And you are a woman, struggling with insecurities about one's body is normal. But if it is too much, Go for help like Cosmographer said before me!

When I was 13y I weighed 101 -103 was 4 11 and my measurements were

38 – 26 -37.

Talk about awkward. My measurements have only increased but the ratio pretty much is the same.

Eat right (set yourself up for success for the rest of your life) & take a one a day vitamin for teen girls, and try to avoid getting sick (while your body is fighting a sickness it isn’t working on your growth). I give it to my son & he has grown 3 inches in one year, he might have done that anyway but it doesn’t hurt.
