Normal-size portions don't fill me up!

Quote  |  Reply
I am trying really hard to give up binging, and what I noticed is that normal-size portions do not fill me up. Today, I had... a yogurt with granola, 3 small oatmeal raisen cookies with cool whip, some Fiberone, 3 bowls of Special K with soy milk, about 3/4 cup of fresh pineapple, 3 pc dried pineapple, and 4 lifesavers mints ...and after all that I was not even full. How can I stop binging if even after eating all this food, I still want more, because I am not at all full yet.

You could try eating more protein which should help fill you up.  Lean meat or chicken . . . even crackers with peanut butter.

I used to think I wasn't full either . . . but, in reality, that was more in my mind . . . I was just FULL all the time.

I would say just eat until you're not hungry, not until you're full.

Just as long as you aren't feeling actual hunger, you will be ok to stop and get more when you feel hungry again.

Also, make sure you drink lots of water!  It REALLY makes a difference!

EDIT TO ADD:  I agree with the protein thing too =)

Eat all the broccoli and cucumbers and raw spinach you want. Oh, and celery and radishes.

That's will fill you up.

And eat EVERYTHING. EXTREMELY. SLOWLY.
Oh and baby utensils help with things that you need to use utensils for!  They help me A TON!

Yeah try to take your time with eating, I'm not sure the exact time but something like after 15-20min your body signals that it's full.

It's hard to get full on normal portions of calorie dense foods like granola, cookies and even cereals. It's much easier to keep your calories low with lots of bulky foods like veggies. I second Molly's suggestion of broccoli! I'll often fill up half of my dinner plate with broccoli (I like it roasted, yum) and then I can have a small serving of protein and a small serving of starch. You can get really full this way.

I totally agree with what deflepfan said--eat until your hunger is satiated, not until you're uncomfortably full.

and if you can't eat slower on your own [I had that problem and was stuffing my face trying to get that 'full' feeling only to feel disgustingly full soon after].. behold the utensils of wonder: CHOPSTICKS! :D

Everyones here is right on

Get some protein in there- just carbs messes with hunger.
Get some ver low call filler food like vegs.
Eat ... very ... slowly.

and I would add distract yourself while your brain get signs your satiated.  Allow a certain amount of time to feel a bit hungry after eating before considering eating further to let the digestion hit full gear.
I find that foods that my body finds difficult to process -- for me, broccoli, cucumber, and yogurt -- make me feel fuller better than anything else.  Just end your meal with a huge salad, and munch on it until you don't want to eat anymore.

one of the things i noticed about everything you ate - was they were pretty much all sweet things.  Not quite sure what that means - but i would say try filling up on savoury stuff  - and proteins.  More veg - i mean you can absolutely go beserk on veg (so long as not chips or pots on the whole) and nothave it count for a whole heck of a lot - my personal favourite is courgettes which are so adaptable and can be used as a pasta substitute either thinly sliced like tagliatelle or chopped like penne.

Either way it would seem you need to cut out the small sweet snacks and go for the low cal big portions of veg

My stomach eventually adjusted so that I am no longer dissatisfied with smaller portions, but when I first started on this, I would keep TONS of carrot sticks, celery sticks etc on hand to munch on until my stomach was full.  Their calories are almost nothing, so it's worth a shot.

E A T   V E R Y   S L O W L Y   !

Take small bites and savor each bite.

Have LARGE portions of vegetables (spinach, lettuce, carrots, celery)

Gradually reduce your portion sizes from what you used to eat to a recommended portion size.  If your stomach is used to getting a lot of food, then that is what it will expect.  When I first started measuring my portion sizes, I'd look at a portion like WHAT!!! It's way to small!  Now, it isn't to small.

I find that carbs do not do a good job at filling me up if it is all I eat. I agree that you need protein, but also fat. Fat helps you to feel full, and you need healthy fats in your diet. Try adding some nuts.

a large glass of water before your meal... a glass of water after your meal, and sip water between bites... the water will help.  and then it will flush all toxins out after! win win.
don't worry about how empty you feel, just eat what you want and stop stressing... when you stop thinking about it, you will stop obsessing about how you feel.

Take a drink of water between each bite.  Not only will that cause you to eat  more slowly, but you will feel more full.  Also drink a full glass of water before and after you eat (in addition to the water you drink between bites).

Like others have said, you can eat tons of raw veggies to get more full without all the calories.

Sometimes after I would eat, I would still feel hungry for an hour after I was done with a normal sized meal.  That feeling would make me go crazy and want to go for a high fat/calorie snack or dessert.  However I have found that drinking more fluids and eating more slowly will help your hunger go away much faster.

Personally I would suggest considering at some meat into the mix and also add some more fiber. I find myself I need to grab a snack I try to gravitate towards having something with fiber. Plus if your still hungry, I can see why that doesn't seem like that many calories your getting. Also the other thing I would suggest considering what I started doing towards the end of heavy duty calorie counting is vary my calorie count by +/- 100 calories each day so that way the body doesn't get to used to the same amount. Good luck. ;)
If you are hungry drink a whey protein shake with fat free milk in the morning, it has only about 100cals and can fill you up nicely. It works great for me.
Wow! These are some great suggestions. Thanks everyone! Keep them coming!
