NoSalt, a sodium free alternative...
Just curious if you guys know anything about sodium free salt alternatives? Are they bad for you if you are trying to lower your sodium intake. I have modified my microwave meal layout to about 3000-3500mg of sodium a day, down from 4500-5000. I don't have high blood pressure, but the high sodium diet was causing a lot of bloating/water retention...
So I picked up NoSalt a sodium free alterantive. Which taste just like salt and appears to have no nutritional value to it what so ever, except about 650mg of potassium. It contains:
Potassium chloride
potassium bitartrate
adipic acid
silicon dioxide
mineral oil
and fumaric acid...
So is this really bad for you?
Probably not unless you throw your potassium-sodium levels out of balance?
As somebody who is required to be on a low salt diet for an inner ear disorder, they recommend that I don't use the alternatives eaither. They recommend I use other spices. I eat less than 1500 mgs a day and I feel a lot healthier than I did a year ago.
well I doubt I will through the sodium potassium levels out of wack, if anything I will balance it out more. I think...
Whoa, where'd you find that stuff? I've seen you in the weight gainers board and I agree that when you're eating a lot of calories to gain (like you and I) then your sodium levels are even harder to keep under control. I may have to give this NoSalt a try...
I found it at walmart near the salts and spices.... I seriously haven't found anything that says its bad for you...
corinth, why did your doctors say that its bad to use the salt alternatives? i know that ive heard bad things about them, but i dont remember.
still haven't found anything that claims its bad for you...

Anything for me that is "fake" is bad for me. Not for everybody but for me. I cannot have sugar subsitutes as well.
well its not really fake, or imitation salt, its simply potassium chloride, potassium and salt are both chloride based elements, hence why they are so close to each other on the periodic table. Which is why I presume that they taste the same.
For anybody looking for a different kind of salt replacement, I really like salt-free spike, which you can find in the spice aisle of natural food stores and some regular grocery stores. It's really yummy on eggs.
Ingredients: Defatted soy, onion, orange crystals, nutritional yeast, garlic, celery, dill, horseradish, lemon peel, mustard, orange peel, parsley, white pepper, turmeric, green and red bell peppers, rosehips, summer savory, mushrooms, safflower, coriander, fenugreek, basil, marjoram, oregano, thyme, tarragon, cumin, ginger, cayenne pepper, cloves, spinach, rosemary, cinnamon, paprika, tomato and stevia
NoSalt = a little goes a long way... and after a while... you can taste that it really isn't salt at all...
Is my sodium intake too low?
You have nothing to worry about because sodium deficiency is extremely rare. In fact, there is not even an recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA... Read more
