Nothing to wear in process of losing weight...have you experienced this?
I've lost about 5 of the 30 pounds I'm trying to lose, and I'm having a really hard time getting dressed for the day because I'm still trying to hide certain parts of my body. I know I shouldn't hide, but I'm trying to dress comfortably with what is right for me and I'm just not comfortable with my body yet (and I'm working hard to change that). At the same time, I still want to look nice and take care of my appearance and flatter my figure while I'm losing weight. It takes me so long to pick out an outfit and I usually just end up wearing about 2 or 3 outfits repeatedly...it gets so frustrating. I have money saved up to buy brand new clothes once I hit my goal weight and it's been great motivation so far. But I really don't want to spend a lot of money on clothes that are just not going to fit me in a few months or so, for right now. Has anyone felt like this? Do you have any tips? :/
I definitely have felt this... I am right inbetween my "fat" clothes and my "skinny" clothes... what I did was by some cheaper clothes from Target or Meijer just to get me through... I probably spent ~$100 on a couple of pairs of pants and shirts... it is enough to get me through and not cost me too much... :-)
Two words, clearance racks!
I went from a size 18 to a size 10. I'm hoping for a size 8 and have purchased a few pairs of pants that are a size 8. I don't think I have paid more than $7.00 for a piece of clothing since I started. I usually go to Kohls or JC Penny and look exclusively on the clearance rack. Granted most of the items I have purchased are very generic, one pair of black pants, one brown skirt, etc.
The other thing that I did was to donate all of my size 18, 16 and 14 work wear to a chairty that specializes in helping needy people prepare for entering the workforce (i.e., job interviews). It was a fantastic way to get rid of those larger (more expensive) clothes and help someone else out in the process.
Good luck!
Clearance and seasonal sales really do give you a lot of flex with a budget. Might not be popular opinion but you Can find stuff that new with tags at goodwill (least ours here) or garage sales. My aunt made a killing at a moving sale with nice clothing. Ebay too!
And thanks tciherr... I've got some larger work stuff that I'm never going back to but couldn't will myself to toss. Going to have to see if we've got something like that in this area!
I'm a thrift store nut. I love going thrifting! It's fun, it's cheap, and you can re-donate the stuff too when your done! 5 years ago I was a size 26; I got down to a 10 and now I"m a 14 (but losing again, woohoo!) so I DEFINATELY feel your pain.
Also, consider having clothes you really like altered in the mean time. Find a decent tailor or just someone who does good alterations. Usually to take your waist in or whatever it's only a few bucks. I did that with some things I realy liked and wasn't ready to give up.
weirdness. i know i replied to this thread, and yet my post isn't here. but if i go through my profile and find the link there, it is. not just mine, but another (mommakitty?)
either way, the thread has (had) 4 replies, but they're not the same replies.
edit: oh-kay. two threads, same name, different forums. that's called spamming, by the way.
Sorry about the "spamming", I didn't know. Sometimes I've just posted in another forum to get more opinions.
But thanks everyone for the replies. I've just been really frustrated the past few days but I might try out some thrift stores in the meantime...
I am waaaaaay to small for my fat clothes but still have a bit to go before it makes sense to buy a whole new closet. soooo I decided that for now I am just going to roll with everything baggy and thug out some more. Although I do look in the mirror some days and question if I should really leave the house with 3 to 4 (went from a xxxxl to a Xl) sizes too small clothes on I still look better thuggin' out than I did fat as eff!! My belt is pretty funny since I had to use a knife and put new holes in it several times and now the extra slack goes around to my back!
Sales items are awesome and I could get new gear for prolly 100 bucks but I enjoy swimming in my clothes since one short year ago my xxxxl gear did not fit me.

I LOVE the thrift store, especially on half price day! Honestly, almost all my clothes come from there, and people at work are always commenting on my cute outfits. I can get very nice clothing for crazy cheap.
I'm down 47 pounds, so yes, I know how this goes. I have been mostly sticking with my larger-sized tops, but I hate having jeans/trousers that just fall off without a belt, so I've bought one or two pairs in interim sizes. That means I have two pairs of 16s, two pairs of 14s, and right now I only have one pair of 12s. Tomorrow I'm going to go buy one or two more pairs of 12s at the outlet mall. I'll hit Old Navy and go through their clearance racks to get some reasonable pants or jeans.
I work in a professional situation in a large corporation where business casual is acceptable, but in corporate marketing, business casual trends toward a bit more formal. Having my clothes hang off is a wonderful testament to my weight loss, but not a good statement about my professionalism.
im just down one size (maybe two from my fattest few weeks), three months into this, but i desperately need jeans, and have decided that as of hitting the 200 mark this morning, down 13 lbs, (depending on when i start my count,) i've decided that its ok to have one new pair, and they can be "fat pants" next month. Because right now, I can pull my last existing pair of socially appropriate jeans off my hips without unbottoning them! i did it today, and then got confused when it was time to pull them back up. LOL. ;p
granted im only three months into a year plus journey i suspect, but i'm doing good, and i get to feel good about what i'm doing. I get to feel good in my clothes. I dont like feeling dumpy because i'm too cheep to buy one pair of well fitting jeans.
a piece of two of well fitting cloths feel worth their price in motivation every few months, getting to look and feel good in the process is only going to help me keep up the effort.
quality of life. thats what this is about for me. feeling good is the reward, and my efforts are already paying off. so new garment purchase number one is on my shopping list: new jeans.
(and i do like those two words: "clearance rack")
its important to feel good in your cloths, however you decide to do it.
I lost 25lbs and went from an XXL bottom, to a Large (size 20 to a 16) and my tops were an XL and I'm now a Large top. At first I was excited to buy new clothes, but then I saw the prices of everything and noticed that I will just be getting smaller. I went to Old Navy because I knew they were the most likely to have sales on. I got 4 large shirts, 3 of them were only $6 and the other was $10. I felt really good about those prices, but bottoms are a whole other story! Bottoms are so expensive, so I called up all the tailors in my city and they all said it would cost at least $25-$50 to take in one item of clothing. I was like what
so, my mom helped me and today we took in my favorite skirt and 2 pairs of bermuda shorts for Hawaii. They now fit me like a glove! We did a better job than I think the tailors would have done.
Also, I don't know if you like yoga pants, but I find they are perfect for losing weight! They are stretchy so you get more sizes out of them and even when they eventually become too big for you they are easy to take in by hand.
Oh and go to Walmart! I know they don't have good quality stuff, but they are pretty stylish now and the prices are really good. I mean, the quality doesn't matter since you are only going to be wearing them for a little while.
when i started this adventure three months ago:
two pair of sweats at sears, clearance rack, 6.99 each. I bought em a little tight, and the legs are getting noticably baggier. well made, durable. good purchase. i love them.
oh, and a set of hand weights.
I don't know where you live or anything, but we have Marshalls and T.J. Maxx where they sell designer clothes for EXTREMELY cheap. You could definitely go and get some new clothes that fit and flatter you a little better without cutting in to your wardrobe savings for when you hit your goal.
I had the same problem, I want to lose 40 lbs, I've lost 20 of that, and with 20 pounds I went down from an 8 to a 6 (my jeans that are 8's can be pulled off of me without even being unbuttoned, that's how big they are) and so I had to give in and go buy a few new pairs of pants that are a size 6, even though I plan to lose 20 more lbs. and hopefully I will be a size 4 by then and all of my 6's won't fit... it was very frustrating. I had to buy new belts too- belts are NOT cheap! They're like $20!
Good luck! Congratulations on losing 5 lbs. already =)
Macy's has a 180 day return policy. In the past, I have purchased clothes from Macy's, worn them for a few weeks (keeping them in good condition) and then returned them.
