they sure did. 

how did it go tonight?

It went ok.  They didn't want a 'funeral' so hubby will take the remains to work and dispose  - they're doing the underground on a new building and I think of the singing frog on Bugs Bunny and it makes me smile.

Shorty cried and cried and Spike got really flippant and silly.  Then they fought all night, so I sent them to bed early.  I think they would have handled it better if I had handled it better.

But I didn't use any euphemisms or fancy words, just a simple explanation.  I'm glad of that, at least they don't have any false impressions.  I was proud of Shorty, too, he asked to see the body, so i showed him.

He didn't freak out or get silly or scared.  He cried harder, but said Floyd looked really happy and sleeping.  I think he was scared one of the cats had done it.

I think he gets it, as much as a semi-sophisticated 5 year old can.  He likes fighting and 'killing' but I think this was the first time he realized killing led to dead.

I'm going to bath and bed.  Pfft.  Maybe this week will pass faster.

I think you handled it well. and they handled it as well as any child can.
