November's Distance Challenge (aka 100 mile walk, run, etc...)

Quote  |  Reply

Hello all!  After a month off I am back to offer this month's challenge (thanks for standing in foiegras!)

Hooray fall weather - it just makes the walking so much more enjoyable than say... August walks.  Who would like to join in this month's walk/challenge and take advantage of the wonderful outdoors?

I will be aiming for 100 running/walking miles, but other distances/fitness goals are welcome.

Just so you know... 100 miles (160.93 km) = 3.33 miles (5.36 km) per day; 50 miles (80.47 km) = 1.67 miles (2.69 km) per day

I like to keep track of my walking through http://www.mapmyrun.com/ , but you can also use a pedometer as well (like foiegras's trusty Omron HJ-113).

Anyone can join, and I'll try to get your goals posted as soon as possible.

We also have walkers that like to track steps walked instead of mile goals.  If you want to do this just let me know your personal goal and I'll add it to our list.  If you are trying to hit 10,000 steps a day, then I'll put your goal at 300,000 steps for November.

For those of you that like an additional (mainly upper body) challenge, consider adding in some push-ups or planks or some workout time.  I personally will be aiming for 100 push-ups this month (7 - 10 every other day).  Here are some options for different difficulty levels:

Option 1: modified push-ups (either incline or wall).  see description here

Option 2: planks (pick a time goal.  15 min = 60 second planks every other day).  see description here

Option 3: regular push-up (good old floor push-ups).  see description here

Option 4:  more challenging push-up variation of your choosing (clap push-ups, etc.).  see some ideas here

Option 5: resistance band workout - two from foiegras's workout last month are here the animations being helpful and here

Option 6: flexibility workout - try this site with its stick figures (scroll down for them) and this site is also very useful.

Swimmers also welcome.

How often should I post my steps or hours or minutes? As often as you like - some people post daily (even more than once!), others weekly and others in between (I usually update my numbers every two or three days).

We'll support and motivate each other to keep it up! Good luck everyone!

I'll need to pick up the pace a bit.

Wow!!! Lot's of new faces! Hello EVERYBODY!!!!Smile

I finally got out there and picked up a few miles. Determined not to fall behind in November...

5/120 miles

20/150 push-ups

I still can't walk but have found one really good static aerobic exercise - Wii boxing training, hitting the punchbag; non-stop combination punching keeps my HR @65%+ without needing to move my feet.

First time doing a challenge but have been a member of CC since Feb 2007

100 miles walking ( 3-4 miles a day, daily)

40 miles biking (3 x's a week 3 miles)

200 modified push-ups (3-4 days a week x 15 push-ups)

350 sit-ups/ab work ( 3 days a week x 25 sit-ups/ab work)

While I have not walked much today (1.5 miles around campus), I would like to mention that I made it through my first every spin class (a 50 minute long spin class)!

Side note - I may not be able to walk tomorrow - even with the seat padding present, I still feel like I literally got kicked in the rear.  Muscles I didn't know I had hurt.  But good hurt.  Anyway...

8.2 miles total / 91.8 miles to go

I promise to start push-ups soon.

Welcome to our two newest challengers - good luck with your goals for this month!

Wow... November is kicking off to a great start!  Hello to all the new challengers!!  And for the ole' regulars... "Hey"

Well, good news and bad news...

Bad news.. is I got sick.  Seems the flu bug has finally found a home in my home.  Ugh.. Puts a damper on the exercising but I do have that skinny, haven't eaten for two days look. Kiss

Good news.. I'm only 4.4 pounds away from my goal!  I gave myself until March to get there, but I guess these monthly challenges are helping me get there sooner.

As for my goal, I'm with CajunRider and I'm going with calories.  I'll just measure the activity calories that calorie count says.

Goal = 6,000 calories (total guess here, I'll refine it as we go forward)

11/1 - Swam 90 mins = 759 cal

Total for the month: 759 cal / 6,000 cal || 5,241 cal remaining
