November's Distance Challenge (aka 100 mile walk, run, etc...)

Quote  |  Reply

Hello all!  After a month off I am back to offer this month's challenge (thanks for standing in foiegras!)

Hooray fall weather - it just makes the walking so much more enjoyable than say... August walks.  Who would like to join in this month's walk/challenge and take advantage of the wonderful outdoors?

I will be aiming for 100 running/walking miles, but other distances/fitness goals are welcome.

Just so you know... 100 miles (160.93 km) = 3.33 miles (5.36 km) per day; 50 miles (80.47 km) = 1.67 miles (2.69 km) per day

I like to keep track of my walking through http://www.mapmyrun.com/ , but you can also use a pedometer as well (like foiegras's trusty Omron HJ-113).

Anyone can join, and I'll try to get your goals posted as soon as possible.

We also have walkers that like to track steps walked instead of mile goals.  If you want to do this just let me know your personal goal and I'll add it to our list.  If you are trying to hit 10,000 steps a day, then I'll put your goal at 300,000 steps for November.

For those of you that like an additional (mainly upper body) challenge, consider adding in some push-ups or planks or some workout time.  I personally will be aiming for 100 push-ups this month (7 - 10 every other day).  Here are some options for different difficulty levels:

Option 1: modified push-ups (either incline or wall).  see description here

Option 2: planks (pick a time goal.  15 min = 60 second planks every other day).  see description here

Option 3: regular push-up (good old floor push-ups).  see description here

Option 4:  more challenging push-up variation of your choosing (clap push-ups, etc.).  see some ideas here

Option 5: resistance band workout - two from foiegras's workout last month are here the animations being helpful and here

Option 6: flexibility workout - try this site with its stick figures (scroll down for them) and this site is also very useful.

Swimmers also welcome.

How often should I post my steps or hours or minutes? As often as you like - some people post daily (even more than once!), others weekly and others in between (I usually update my numbers every two or three days).

We'll support and motivate each other to keep it up! Good luck everyone!

Boy-- it's hard to keep up with everybody this month!!!! Surprised

Sooo much activity already-- it's Inspiring!!!!!!!!! Laughing

So far, I'd reached 80,000+ steps yesterday-- the equivalent of 40 miles-- and have already finished another 10,000+ this morning!!! Cool

My Goal today is to reach at least 20,000 steps for a 100,000 steps Total-- for a 50 miles equivalent!!! I did over 15 miles on Tuesday, lol!!! Wink

Best of all, the scale is trying to be Nice-- down to 162.25 today, for a 44.25 Total loss. Also, from a 39" waist, down to a snug 33" waist feels Mighty Good!!! Only 9 more inches to my Dream size... Cool

Need only 5.75 lbs to reach my November Dream Goal of 50 lbs gone and Half-way Done!!! I think I can make it-- through this Inspiring Group! This Challenge is really helping!!! Laughing

GO, NOVEMBER CHALLENGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! CoolCoolCool

Today I did 4 miles, 10 push  ups and 18 minutes of abs.  I need to catch up on my miles on Saturday, but I am so glad I joined this challenge.  I have not lost any weight yet but I am sure I will soon!

11/05 30 min weight lifting work out + 7.2 mile run (860 kcal) so far. Don't know if I'll do any thing tonight. It's not likely that I'll do any thing other than may be ab works because the 7.2 mile run at mid day was not easy given that I tried to fit all that in the lunch hour.

bad start... only 2 miles this morning! I was hoping for 4 but... maybe tonight I will get that burst of energy I have been looking for the past couple of days. I bet a good long walk is where I will find it. I just feel like curling up and the couch and doing NOTHING all the time. November... hmmmm, must be the cooler weather!

Great Stats in here Today!!!!!!! Still workin' on mine... Laughing

Ugh.. I got nothing to post.  I think I may have a little h1n1 so 1) I can't breathe 2) I don't think I should work out while being drugged up 3) I don't think anyone wants me working out next to them at the gym..

I wish I could get some workouts in, but I need to get better first.  I feel like November is passing me up and I'm getting bigger and lazier each day that passes.  2B any encouraging words for me?  Cry

brendenj, I am no 2b... but I think you just need to rest up and let yourself get well... When you do then you can jump right back into November!!! I hope you are feeling better soon!!! Drink plenty of fluids!

4 miles this morning!!! I DID IT!!! FINALLY... I have been such a lazy butt the last week or two. I get out there and just give up and come back home but today... I kept going till I FINISHED!!!! YAY ME!!!!

10 pushups too!!!Laughing

17/120 miles

10/150 push-ups

35/250 w/t

Sorry you feel rough, Brendenj!!! Surprised

Encouraging Truth... "This, too, will pass..." Wink

I feel for you!!! Last month was awful for me due to a Head cold in late September turning into the dreaded swine flu through over half of October... I felt like that old song, "Wipe Out!" Tongue out

I ended up losing a lot that month, in spite of being almost completely inactive-- burning fewer calories than CC expects in even sedentary living! My BodyBugg-like device was funny in showing me just how inert I actually was, lol!!! Undecided

However-- though slow in regaining any energy or, even, ambition-- I'm doing Fantastic now and have my walking and Rebounding going at full speed again! You'll get back on track after your body fully recovers, too-- with your little one and young family to care for, just give yourself plenty of time to get better! Watch your Nutrition and rest! All you can!

The congestion made me fill sooo puffy-- but it DID pass... the scale even showed gains that were entirely due to the congestion...! It was wonderful to get my weight back to normal after that eased up, lol! Sealed

I can Promise that the Future can fully make up for the Present if you just take Good care of yourself now... Wink

GOOD JOB, ROXIEGIRL!!!! Cool

I never doubted you would get it done, lol!!!!! Wink

Thanks 2b and Roxie -- as gross as it sounds, I was wondering how much my head full of fluid (aka snot) is weighing.  haha!  Thanks for the note, I'm encouraged again, and will walk away from the donuts now!

Good! You don't want to feel worse for eating bad, too, lol! However, I DID listen to my bodies requests at times for extra stuff-- it probably needs more when fighting fevers, etc... simple carbs have a place as fuel, too... Wink

I used Airborne tablets for their Vitamin C and herbs punch, too-- they REALLY help us with the symptoms when we are congested. They boost the Immune system, so they can be a really good idea... I believe my reducing fruit led to reducing my Immune system-- and I got sick, then sick again! My Immune system couldn't cope with so much so fast! Dieting can make us more susceptible... Undecided

By the way-- I once had an MRI done with my past MS, and had a terrible congested head cold-- arrgh! I had to keep a peppermint in my mouth to keep from coughing... They told me they could see how bad my head really was...!!! Surprised

Yes... congestion shows on the scale... Sealed

Oh! I learned something about the swine flu you might find handy-- the germs/virus can live only 20 minutes on a soft surface, and 24 hours on a hard one... My bed was soft surfaces, so Hubby was safer than you'd expect and never caught it... I'm sure you want to protect your Family, too, so maybe that info can ease your mind a bit... Wink

Drinking lots of fluids will thin the congestion so it gets easier to deal with, and white grape juice is a very powerful thinner if you have chest issues-- my youngest daughter once had double bronchial pneumonia and we learned about it then-- she immediately responded to that juice when she needed to cough and clear her chest... If you mix it with water and sip on it, the calories won't be so bad, and it can aid you gradually... Smile

Hope Today is Better for you! Laughing
