nutri system help

Quote  |  Reply

Hi,

I just ordered nutri system and I know that I have to add dairy, fruits, vegetables, and protein items to my meals.  The meals will be at my door in just 2 days, and I don't have a grocery list or the knowledge of the healthiest choices for the foods listed above.  So I need your help...please help me by giving me a grocery list for the foods listed above. (actual brand names would be great as they all differ in sugar, sodium, etc)

What would you pick up from the grocery store if you were on nutrisystem?

I need to get:

dairy

fruits

vegetables

protein

Thanks so very much!!

P.S.  I didn't know which group to post this topic in, so since it fits in the food and the weight loss group, I posted in both in hopes of getting more help.  Please don't be mad that I posted my question twice.  I just need help because I am clueless...I just started this diet!  help.

You won't find many brands when it comes to traditional, natural foods and that's no bad thing!......  Dairy products are milk, butter, cheese, yoghurt etc.  Look for 'low-fat' versions and you're fine.  Fruits.... that speaks for itself.  Get a good range of fruit and try to go for plenty of different colours so that you've got a nice selection.  Vegetables..... also speaks for itself.  Green leafies are probably your best bet, things like spinach, broccoli, cabbage, lettuces.  And then branch out into carrots, peppers, courgettes/zucchini.... lots to choose from.  Protein can be either animal or vegetable.  All types of whole-muscle meat, eggs and fish are excellent sources of proteins (as is dairy).  Try to avoid processed versions like lunch-meat or sausages and salted/preserved product such as ham and bacon.  Vegetable protein comes from beans, lentils, chickpeas, quorn, tofu, nuts and seeds.

Hope something in there helps.

As far as protein, I don't like beans, lentils, nuts, seeds, etc.....would it be ok to eat hard boiled eggs (only the whites!) to get my protein?

I am also having problems with inflammation, carpal tunnel syndrome, arthritis....so the main reason for my question above is to find options that are low in sugar/sodium....and I wasn't sure if some dairy and fruit options naturally had a bunch of sodium of which I would want to avoid.

Thanks again!

You could eat the whole eggs to get your proteins.... the yolks contain a little fat but also contain a natural antioxidant which is very good for you.  (Egg-whites are a little dull on their own)  Fruit, vegetables, grains and meat/fish etc., are all very low in sodium quite naturally.   Dairy products like cheese (and other preserved foods) tend to be high in salt.  But if you stick with plain natural yoghurt and milk for your dairy intake you should be fine.   It's a pity you don't like beans because they're an excellent food... high in fibre, iron & protein with no fat to speak of.

BTW... if your diet comprised all of those foods plus a few wholegrains and if you watched your portions you'd probably find you lost weight without paying for Nutrisystem.....

Thank you so much!  A big help!

I would love to not have to pay for nutri system...I don't plan on staying on it for long, just long enough until I can learn how to buy my own food and make my own smart choices, because I am definitely not disciplined when it comes to good food choices!

Thanks again!

It's easier than you think to make smart food choices....   All the cheap, basic things you have to peel, chop, slice, mix around or spend a little time cooking are generally a good choice :-)  If it comes ready-made in a fancy packet saying 'this is really good for you' on the front ... avoid it like the plague LOL!  Obviously all the advertising is pegged at making us buy more of the fancy stuff in packets... there's no money in cabbages and apples!

What do you get for your money with Nutrisystem?  Is it milkshake-type meal replacements?

no, it's not milkshake replacement like slimfast.  There are no milkshakes at all.  It is a 28 day meal delivery program...they give you 28 breakfasts, lunches, dinners, and desserts.  You just have to add fruit, yogurt, dairy, or vegetables to each meal.  Check out their menu on their website.

The only reason I went on it is because a friend went on it, lost weight, felt healthy doing it, and let me see and taste the food ahead of time.  Otherwise, I prolly would have never thought about going on it!

And the cost is less than 10 bucks a day. (well, it's prolly like 12 or 15 bucks a day after you add the fruits, veggies, and dairy from the grocery)

I'm not saying it is the best program or the best food...I just ordered it today and haven't received the food yet, so I don't know if it will work for me.  If I feel like it won't work for me within the first month, they have a money back guarantee, at least!

I am putting so much crap into my body because I don't like to cook...I never cook....I always grab the quick easy meals and heat them up....nutri system are quick meals, but they don't have all the preservatives or sodium like lean cuisine, weight watchers smart ones, etc.  I need to cut way down on sodium intake and this seems like a really easy way to at least start that process.

I know, though, that just about every diet program is too good to be true.  I just want to eat healthier than I am now....and right now, I am eating pizza, mac n cheese, and Mcdonalds just about everyday because of convenience.  This has got to be healthier than all that! hehehe.

: )

Well good luck.... And when you stop the programme how about using the money you save to enrol on a cookery course?  :-)  Might stop you falling back into old habits?

I've been on nutri system. You'll be ok if you like the taste of cardboard. I gave my stuff away. I suppose some stuff is ok but most is too terrible to eat. IMHO

You want to go by this rule of thumb always - eat everything in as close to it's natural state as possible. fresh fruits and veggies (the darker in color the better, like berries and leafy greens). Lean meats, chicken, turkey, fish and even beef it's it's a lean cut. Stcik with fat free dairy products, like skim milk, reduced fat cheeses and cottage cheese. Basically, you want to steer clear of anything man made.

Bleck Nutri System.  I did that back in 1990 and the food was rancid/vile!  I hope they've improved on the taste since then!

You do realize that Nutrisystem probably isn't the best thing for someone who wants to find foods low in sodium, right? Nutrisystem is just packaged foods in small quantities (and even lower quality, from what I have tasted), and packaged foods = plenty of sodium. Although one or two servings of their foods is okay, having it 3-4 times a day, the sodium really adds up.

Honestly, I would have saved my money and used it to buy a food scale and a real grocery list with fresh foods, real meats, less sodium/preservatives, etc. All you've got to do is learn how to measure your own REAL/FRESH foods (i.e NON packaged foods) and BAM! You got your own "nutrisystem". Why waste the money? Not only that, but foods you can cook/prepare at home is much more tasty.

Anyhow, goodluck!

This could be a problem with Nutrisystem. I found that two years ago when someone brought in some of their nutrisystem packets to work I looked at the nutritional information and found them loaded full of sodium.

To be honest, I would recommend going to the store (after you have eaten of course) and look at some of the foods. Check the back of something yummy to see if it is worthwhile to eat.

For example: Fiber One bars...9 grams of fiber, 140 calories, and 90 mg of sodium. Egg starts 30 calories really low sodium.

Just simply look at the nutrition information on everything and get the best bang for your buck nutrition wise (don't worry about name brands). Then set up a daily calorie goal based on your needs and you have just saved a bundle.
I just stopped Nutra system. On for less than a month.

If I have to fix up the food to be able to eat it, then I'll just eat what I can get at the grocry store.

The food doesn't taste too good and they recommend you add stuff to make it taste better? HUH????

I think with them its portion control mostly cause the calories are really awful in their foods . I can eat more regular food for the same calories.

So I am eating what I have an counting the calories and watching the portions.

I am currently on NURTISYSTEMS (NS). I have to say the food is not that bad. I mean of course it's not In and Out, if it was I would be staying FAT. Some of the food I like some I don't its always gonna be a mixed bag, when you have to choose 28 meals before hand. I also realize that my taste buds have been trained to like saltier foods.

I absolutly love the fact that I get to add in fresh veggies, fruits, and Veggies. I will admit I was on WW for years. It is just to easy to cheat and justify it. NS is definatly  aboout learning portion control.

As for the sodium, the food (if eaten in the intended proportions) is under the daily recomendation for sodium.

Every diet you will be hungry. It is usally just your body eating fat, and not getting the food you are craving!

Nothing tastes as good as thin feels tho! Good Luck!!!
