I've recently been having some real problems with fatigue, mostly due to an erratic schedule. A few weeks ago, I forgot to bring my usual lunch to work and all I had to work with was a can of soup, so I decided to grab a Luna nutrition bar. I was AMAZED at the difference I felt- I was actually able to make it through the remaining four hours of work without thinking of food constantly, and staring at the clock, yearning miserably for dinner time.
I started buying them regularly and was loving them, but because of the peanut butter recall, I have to switch to another brand for the time being. Does anyone have any suggestions?
I'd like to keep them at or under 200 calories per bar since I prefer to eat them in addition to a meal, not as one. And I'd prefer that the sugar content wasn't ridiculously high. Let me know what you've tried and if it's worked for you.
Try these:
- Clif bars
- NuGo bars
- Snickers Marathon Nutrition bars
- Odwalla bars (a little higher in calorie than you'd like, but very good with different varieties)
- Try another flavor from Luna (Iced Oatmeal Rasin, Dulce de Leche, Cookies and Cream, Caramel Nut Brownie, and S'mores flavors are really good)
Pure Protein Bars - usually about 200 calories, only 2g sugar and 20 grams of protein
Keep in mind that only Luna bars with a specific "sell by" date were affected by the peanut problem. As long as you check the label, you can still eat Luna bars! Check out the sell by date information here: http://www.clifbar.com/
I second the pureprotein bars- especially chocolate deluxe, smores and peanut butter marshmallow eclipse (don't think they have been recalled).
Others:
- balance bars (cookie dough is amazing)
- luna sunrise
- clif bars (240 cals- I usually crumble half into a yogurt...recommend maple nut in vanilla yogurt or chocolate brownie in raspberry yogurt!)
- extend bars
- kashi crunchy bars (the rolls are around 200 cals but way too chewy for me- recommend the chocolate caramel flavor- 150 cals I think)
Anyone know where I can find the Pure Protein bars? I live in an area where the closest stores are Giant Eagle and Walmart. There's a GNC about 40 minutes away though...
I have about the same input, but eat these daily and wanted to share
I've never tried the Luna ones, but Odwalla is one of my favorites. Their peanut butter chocolate is my favorite, and I can only eat half of it and still feel full inbetween meals. This makes the bars only seem 50 cents a day then too. I also like the Kashi ones, pumpkin spice is my favorite, but they seem a little small. The quaker ones are only 90cal but they don't fill me up like the others - their just regular granola bars I think. Besides that the Clif Kids one is good and not as much cal's as the larger one. Besides that, Larabars are great.
I love zapping them in the microwave for 10 seconds or so as well - makes the bars even better. Good luck bar searching, I have a whole tuppleware box of them !
If you are into "clean" eating as well, metagenics has a great line of bars and shakes that you can use if you ever get tired of the same old bar.
You can buy the Pure Protein bars at Walmart and Target. :)
I have a lot of food allergies (including peanut and tree nut), so I usually eat Kashi chewy granola bars in chocolate cherry. The off-brand is much sweeter, and doesn't have actual cherries in it (I think it's just chocolate chip now that I think about it). They're pretty reasonably priced.
Atkins Day Break, Cranberry Almond. 1540 cals, 1 g. sugar, 5 g fibers, 10 g proteins. This is not for you if you don't like artificial sweeteners. Personally, it works better for me than the Luna, Clif and Kashi with all their sugars. I have tried a lot of bars and Atkins and South Beach are the ones that work best for me.
I was a huuuge Luna fan for years. Eventually I got sick of them and went on a protein bar hunt.
My favorites now:
#1) LARA BARS - amazingly filling and all natural (literally the ingredients for my favorite one, peanut butter cookie, is dates and peanuts...thats it)> protein isn't AS hugh as some of the supplement ones, but if you're not using it to get you through an intesnse workout, I say laraaaa
Otherwise, I second pureprotein (just NOT SMORES), Zone perfect dark chocolate is amazing, metRx protein plus, and of course, kashi golean CRUNCHY!
ENJOY!
Balance Bars are only 100 calories and the protein content in them keeps me full forever! a great afternoon snack
I found these bars called ProBars. There are 15 whole foods guaranteed in each PROBAR and are also about 70% raw. This means you get optimal nutrient quality, undestroyed by processing. Sure they are more calories but you can break it in half and eat one half in the morning and the other at night. ( I do that). They are also vegan friendly if you care. Check out the website.
Don't waste your time with Pure Protein, MetRx and other bodybuilding bars. Sure they have lower sugar but its the fake kind and you will gain weight from it. Its the same thing as eating a candy bar.
lara bars rock. i love that there's nothing unhealthy on the ingredient list AT ALL. Cherry Pie is the yummiest, though banana bread comes in a close second.
i like south beach high protein cereal bars, 140 cals and very filling because they';re high protein. also special k high protein bars, just as good as the south beach but 180 cals so i tend to eat the south beach a little more to save some calories...
i used to eat powerbars all the time, and luna are pretty good too- check the labels like another poster said because only some were recalled depending on the dates.
Today I had a kashi roll bar

Tasted like a candy bar and was really good for me :)
