Nutrition Label

Quote  |  Reply

I bought these Tortillas. The total says 80 calories, but detailed information lists:

Total Fat 3g

Total Carbohydrate 18g

Dietary Fiber 12g

Protein 8g

3*9+18*4+8*4=131 calories!

Am I missing something?

nutrition labels can subtract the calories added from fiber since your body doesn't really digest it

Well even after subtracting 12g of fiber it's still way above 80 calories, or is there multiplier involved?

Those rules of thumb such as 1g fat = 9 calories are very rough guides.  Also make sure the information you're looking at isn't 'per 100g' rather than 'per tortilla'.

Wait, but if fiber is not counted, then the total carbs would essentially be 6g-

3*9+6*4+8*4=85

which is about 80

Good find. I actually noticed that some companies subtract off fiber and some don't so you always have to check!

Umneydurak, love the name.

...and that's why a cup of GoLean original actually has 200 calories, and 1/2 cup of Fiber 1 has 100 =/

Thanks. :)

So what is the "correct" way of doing it?

Okay...that's confusing. >____<!

Are we eating the calories from the fiber? (O_o) If so, I'm gonna faint because I just checked all my cereals and they don't count the fiber in.  *sigh*

Because fiber is essentially eliminated from the body without calorie absorption, in the US, companies are allowed to put total calories on nutrition labels AFTER subtracting fiber calories.

In Canada (and probably other countries, as well), all the calories are counted -- doesn't detract from the fact that the fiber calories go right through you -- that is why the same  food product could have different nutritional information if labeled in different countrie
