Nuts: too much or not at all?
So for me, nuts is sort of an "all or nothing" food. I can either eat 4-5 oz of it easily, or just as easily have none at all. Should I try to cut out nuts for now to decrease my snacking and have more normal-sized meals? Today my percentages were: 46% fat, 19% protein, 35% carbs. I just keep hearing how healthy they are...for one serving :/
I feel you.. it`s the same for me. What I have found helps is having just a handful as part of a more complex meal. Mixed in oatmeal or sprinkled on a salad, they are not so easy for me to overeat. But when I open a huge bag of nuts and dig in - oh my! It`s all gone before I know it.
If I have nuts in my house, I'll snack on them when I walk by them. Instead, I stop at the gas station pre or post workout and buy the 1.5 oz bags of them, so I can eat them all without guilt : )
I keep nuts in the freezer and add them in weighed amounts to meals, only, never snacks. They thaw quickly, but don't tempt me as snacks when they are out of sight in the freezer. Plus, it keeps them from going rancid. I might add a half ounce to my oatmeal, or to my salad. I never, never eat them from the container, because I could easily get to a day's calories without even noticing it.
Thanks for all your suggestions! I did try to make them as part of my meals, as like a dessert, but I just kept going, lol. I like the idea of incorporating them into dishes. Thank you!!
I have the same problem with cashews. I can't keep a pound of salted cashews around for more than 2 days. I solved the problem by buying unsalted almonds. I weigh one ounce servings and put each serving in a seperate zip bag. I can then take out one or two bags each day, depending on what's on the day's menu plan.
The unsalted almonds are a great replacement for chips at lunch time and have allowed me to replace unhealthy fat in my diet. However, I don't like them enough that they are a binging threat!
Switching to an unsalted nut that is okay but not irresistable might be a solution for you.
Ah, I eat any nut raw or roasted, favorite or not favorite. They will disappear quickly at any rate xD
I do not eat nuts, look at nuts or touch nuts - all because if I ever did: I'd probably eat about 2390738473 cups worth! ha ha!
Nuts are actually one of the few foods I can portion fairly well, although I am sure I eat more than a serving in a day.
Anyway, I dont know but for some reason, I never notice weight gain and have much less bloating and stomach bloat when I snack on nuts versus pretzels, crackers, yogurts, cereal etc.
I do sometimes buy preportioned almond and pumpkin seed packs, and take them to work (Pumpkin seeds get classified as nuts as well in my book)
