I'm so tired of health magazines pushing nuts as the new miracle healthy food. I can't stand nuts! I've never voluntarily had a PBJ, I pick the walnuts out of brownies and suck the chocolate off peanut M&M.
But nuts are healthy in moderation, with good fats and a nice "snack" feel to them. So what are people like me who either hate nuts or are allergic to them supposed to snack on that has the same or similar nutrition? Is edamame like nuts? I've never had them.

Have you ever had roasted chickpeas? They are really easy to make and very nutritions, and not as high in fat as nuts.
The reason the health gurus are pushing nuts is because of the good fats in them, and to counteract the bad rap they get from dieters. Nuts are only one food with good fats - there are plenty more ways to get healthy fats, like from olive oil, flax seed, and avocados to name a few. You don't need to have every single healthy food there is.

I don't like nuts. Never have. I don't mind them in things but not on their own
Edamame looks like lima beans, although I guess it sort of has a nutty kind of taste to it...They are good for you and a source of protein and can be snacked on...
Something more similar I would think of would be seeds, if you like them...Roasted pumpkin seeds or sunflower seeds...They are also high in healthy fats, and are good for snacking :)

So I don't have any substitutions for nuts. But are you sure you don't like pistachios or sunflower seeds - with the shells? I think those are the best because they have the most flavor and are fun to eat. And plus removing the shell takes time so it slowes you down from inhaling them in one fistfull.
I hate nuts too. But I'm not looking for a substitute. I gave up on that. Just the thought of eating them makes me gag. What about raisins or grapes to snack on or some of those 100 cal. packs.
Never had chickpeas but willing to try them. Ditto pumpkin seeds. I read somewhere too that roasted acorns are pretty healthy too but they take a lot of prep work to get rid of the tannin. too bad I didn't read that in the fall when I could've collected some.
I have tried pistachios and sunflower seeds. I think the problem is that they are so full of flavor but i don't like their flavors. (or texture, for that matter.) Thanks for the ideas though.
I didn't mean to come off ranty but I had just finsihed yet another article praising the nut and I couldn't take it anymore.
