I eat oatmeal almost every morning! I make oat bran on weekdays (in the microwave) and steel cut oats on weekends (stove top) when I have more time.

I always add: 1 tbsp ground flax seed, 1 tbsp pure maple syrup and at least 1/4 tsp cinnamon. Most days, I'll add a 1 tbsp of Bob's Red Mill powdered soy protein isolate. Other than that, I add one of the following:

pumpkin puree + raisins + a pinch of nutmeg; apple sauce; dried cranberries; 1/4 cup blueberries; 1/2 chopped-up apple; raisins alone; chopped almonds; strawberries; dried cherries; 1/2 mashed banana + 1 tsp cocoa powder, etc.

Does anyone have any other suggestions for good oatmeal additives? I'd love to try something new!

Wow! So many great ideas and I thought I hadtried a lot of different things! My favorite is PB; I use Naturally More with Flax, less fat, sugar and more protein.  They have it at Albertson's and Wal-Marts here. Good stuff.

I've even added bacon bits (like a tsp) and a fat free cheese slice to change it up. Be careful with protein powders or you could end up with a better glue than a meal (LOL)!

Low fat or fat free flavored creamers change it up but add extra calories.

I once even added a 1/2 serving of sausage and biscuit gravy (I know, don't yell at me, not good for me) instead of having it over a biscuit like the rest of the family.  Lower fat, more fiber and less calories than one Grands biscuit! Yummy too!

Try having oatmeal with an egg. If you have hummus, put one table spoon in it... it's really good if you want an alternative to the sweet recipes.

When I eat oatmeal, I make it with milk, butter, brown sugar and vanilla extract....really good, but not so healthy. Probably 300 calories per bowl. YUM!

Oh, and I like adding coffee too, especially if my oatmeal comes out a little too thick. It always tastes rich and delicious!

i added coffee to my oatmeal today, and it tasted sooo good! :D

One more protein additive: I like to add chocolate Muscle Milk powder and a banana. Mmmmm.

Oh, man, I am totally trying some of these out tomorrow morning!

I like to put applesauce in my oatmeal.

And you can't go bad with peanut butter and dried fruits!

After its cooked I added about 1.5 tbsp extra light cream cheese, splenda and lemon juice - tasted like cheesecake (I also topped it with wheat germ) I loved it!! The next time i used raspberries adn that was good too. And the most recent time i made the cream cheese, splenda and lemon seperate, and just put a blob in the middle. The first two times I found VERY cheesecakey, so more like dessert

i usually just dip cool apple slices in it.
I also like it with bananas and brown sugar
Or cottage cheese, pears, splenda and ginger
Do you think adding instant hot chocolate mix to plain oatmeal would be any good?
instant hot chocolate mix should work fine, though I'd rather just add cocoa powder.

I'm definitely bookmarking this thread :)

In my oatmeal I've tried fresh berries, frozen berries, flavoured yogurt, raisins, vanilla extract, peanut butter, jam, almonds, Cheerios, Fiber One, banana, Carnation instant breakfast powder, hot chocolate mix, cinnamon, applesauce, dried fruit, making it with chocolate milk, making it with strawberry milk and parmesan cheese.

Not all together of course, but I've used different combos amoung the lot and I've never had bad oatmeal.

You guys are reeeeally making me want oatmeal by the way!

Cut up an apple, bake it in the microwave about 25 seconds, toss it in and add some cinnamon and brown sugar....wowzers.

I was eating my usual as I read this: I mash up a banana into paste, add a scoop of peanut butter and a dash of cocoa powder and stir untill well mix, than I cook the oats and just pour them right on top of that and mix until it is all blended.

I've done the chocolate thing (hot chocolate mix or good quality unsweetened baking cocoa powder and a sprinkle of chocolate chips on the top) and the coffee thing. I'd just like to add one more that I love- oatmeal with apple butter, cinnamon, and vanilla extract.

Speaking of apple butter, I add it to cottage cheese and throw in some sunflower seeds... very tasty!

1 packet instant original oatmeal + 1 packet diet hot cocoa mix + 1 tbsp better n' peanut butter + 1/4 cup quaker crunchy corn bran cereal + 3 packets splenda.

amazing, i promise.

edit: the hot cocoa mix tastes WAY better than cocoa powder, imo. cocoa powder is too bitter.
