My oatmeal is BORING.
For the past two months, every time I've eaten oatmeal (usually 4-6 times a week, but I alternate with toast, eggs, etc.) I've made it the following way:
1/3 cup rolled oats
2/3 cup milk
1 tbsp flaxseed
1 tsp. cinnamon (I love my cinnamon. <3)
1-2 tbsp. apple butter
This mix of things seems to satisfy me, but it's getting incredibly BORING. I'm looking for awesome oatmeal ideas (Not necessarily low-calorie- I'm sort of trying to gain/maintain, not lose.) to spice up my morning a little.
And yes, I eat hot cereal in the summer. :)
(And yes, I've also tried cold muesli.)
Thankye! :D
Mr. Breakfast is a great resource. (Great ideas for french toast and egg casseroles too!)
cinnamon + vanilla extract + soy milk, banana optional
good quality plain chocolate baking powder, around 15 calories/tbsp, and if it's GOOD stuff, it will not be horribly bitter. But if you wanted it sweeter, then you just add sweetener to that. Alternatively, you could just use hot chocolate mix.
coffee!
mix some pumpkin and cinnamon sugar in your oatmeal--I love this (especially in autumn when you're getting in that fantastic fall mood); it's like it's own pumpkin pie! Plus, there's loads of fiber with the added pumpkin.
Also google some baked oatmeal recipes!
Try other grains, such as steel cut oats, cous-cous, barley, quinoa etc
Go to katheats.com and see what she does to oatmeal :D
Whattttt.
Think of all the different fruit combinations you can try!
Peach slices, sultanas, satsumas, frozen raspberries, strawberries, and blueberries all taste amazing in oatmeal, and that's just off the top of my head. Just try experimenting, you'll find some combinations you love soon enough.
So good!
Berries (straw, rasp, black and / or blue) and walnuts (5 or so halves)
If you do not have fresh or frozen berries, preserves work.
Pumpkin and cinnamon (ok and walnuts, because I <3 them)
I have dates and apricots at my house right now. I'm thinking that would taste goo, but have never gone for it (if I pas on berries, how can I pass on pumpkin, too?)
I usually have my banana separately before my workout, but that would taste great. I'm intrigued by the cocao powder and peanut butter combos as well, but have yet to try them.
You could try cooking the oats with chocolate milk instead of regular? I tried this with chocolate rice milk but it'd probably taste better with cow chocolate milk.
cinnamon does sound good ....
i've forced myself to eat 3/4cup of plain oatmeal/hot water every day ... it's pretty boring but does the job :)

... is there a logical reason that you're forcing yourself to eat plain oatmeal?

i guess the only reasonable explanation is to cut out anything not needed. i do like flavor, but sometimes (or most times) i think plain is just fine! when i have oatmeal with "flavoring", then i'll take that as a bonu
Eek. Maybe this link will work better:

Go look up oatmeal on the blog, haha.
(edited: link didn't work...again!)
Another favorite is with butter and brown sugar. Make the oatmeal slightly drier than normal and serve on a plate with about 1.5 teaspoons of butter and a generous sprinkling of brown sugar.

My favorite additions are toasted almonds and berries of any kind. Blueberries are my favorite. Absolutely scrumptious, and a great way to include some healthy fats, protein, and a serving of fruit with your breakfast. I highly recommend half an ounce of almonds. It keeps you satisfied for a good hour or two longer than does the oatmeal and fruit alone.
25g porridge oats
1/2 cup skim milk
1 tbsp cinnamon
*cook*
add a grated apple
*cook*
finish off with chopped nuts (brazil are my favourite), brown sugar (just a little tsp) and some more colourful fruit to brighten up the dish...either berries of chopped stone fruit like peaches.
Yes, its high in calories but it makes a HUGE portion and will keep you full for hours!
making sure your meal is colourful and varied will keep you interested...
It comes in at around 380cals
ENJOY!
I looooove adding a touch of brown sugar and a spoonful of cocoa to mine, sometimes a bit of almond milk too.
mm thats like me usually my oats are just made plain with water and a dash of cinnamon..but since im trying to gain weight now i like to mix it up a bit lately ive been having a sweet tooth i know i shouldnt be having esp during the morning hours lol anyway i mix my oatmeal up with organic PB and belgian dark chocolate spread its soo good you dont even have to add much cos its so strong in flavor its like dessert for breakfast (not such a good idea i know but hey its nice every now and then) i also like to add prunes and a handful of nuts to my oatmeal sometimes or fresh fruits and yogurt.. you could also try savory oatmeal (its not as bad as it sounds) have you ever had pilaf? its a turkish rice dish you could try making your oatmeal like that using veggies and spices it'll be like lunch for breakfast but lighter :).
I make a pancake out of mine.
1-packet flavored oatmeal, 2 egg whites, splash of milk.
pour into a small saute pan and cook about 5 min.
Turn and cook another 2 min.
It's great with a little sugar free syrup or sliced banana.
