I recently started to eat steel cut oatmeal WOW What a difference from old fashioned rolled oats.  I can't believe the difference in taste and texture. It is great!

This morning I was in a bit of a rush and had the rolled oatmeal and man... it confirms that I prefer the steel cut.

I've been eating steel cut oats about 5 days a week for years.  It's wonderful!  So much more flavor than rolled oats.  I love it with cinnamon, nutmeg and blueberries!  :)
I just recently tried steel cut oatmeal and it is awesome. I wish I had time to have it every day. I have it on weekends when I have time to wait for it to cook. I have to have quick cook oatmeal during the week Cry

Oatmeal rules!!

I eat steel cut oats on the weekends and regular oatmeal on the weekdays. A bit of milk, some fruit, maybe a sprinkle of chinese five spice. Delish!!

habgirl--i make my steel cut oats in the crockpot overnight, so they're ready when i get up in the morning. just add as much water as you usually would, and set it to low for 7-9 hours. its really yummy too, if you add dried fruit and let that cook with it overnight.
Neat never really seen them in the supermarket I always get rolled.  I definitely will give it a try
Wow I must be in the dark...
I never knew there was a difference o_o
I like them both. Yesterday, I had steel cut oats with some pumpkin puree, nutmeg, cinnamon, raisins and chopped pecans.
having oatmeal makes me look forward to my mornings. :)

Thanks Poly...

I'm going to slow cooker my steel cut oatmeal! What a great idea!!

I cook a big pan, and it reheats nicely in the microwave.

They are hard to find.  I buy mine at an Amish country store.  At Walmart I've seen "groats" and think they may be about the same.
I love steel cut oats, I just wish I could make them in the morning. I ge tup so early as it is, I tend to only eat steel cut on the weekends. They are awesome.
My sister-in-law has given me the steel cut oats but I'm not sure how to make them.  What is the best way?  Is it the same as making the old fashion oats?

I use 1/4 cup dry oats with 1 1/2 cups water.  Put on stove on low heat and slowly cook for about 20-30 minutes.  I add cinnamon, nutmeg, ground flax seed, and blueberries.  Sometimes I add chopped dried figs or prunes.  You could add any fruit you like, apples, bananas and berries.

I always cook my oats in water.

Don't give up bee_roach, keep trying until you find a combination you like! :)

Which one's which? I've had two types but the one I have now doesn't say what type it is on the packet, however its tougher than the flaky stuff I had before and more grainy too
I have mine plain...just water and oatmeal.

The difference between rolled oats and steel cut is rolled are a lot bigger and flattened, the steel cut are small little bits
I make mine using a 1 to 2 ratio.  One part oats to two parts water.  Cook over a low/med heat until the oats are soft.  I use brown sugar and sometimes put raisins in just about when the oats are cooked (you only want to soften them up a bit).   My dad uses Rice Dream - Vanilla in his.  Hope this helps, but keep trying.  Oats are an excellent food source for healthy eating.  Good luck to you Bee_Roach!!!!

If you like steel cut try the Bobs Red Mill Scottish Oatmeal (I don't know if anyone else makes the Scottish kind). WOW a little bit of that with some brown sugar and blue berries--I could die happy.
