Oatmeal

I tried the Maple & Brown Sugar Quaker Oats this morning. I loved the taste but didn't like the consistency. I even used half water they recommended but it just felt too mushy, I like my food with a more solid consistency.

Should I let it sit a couple minutes? Will that help it solidify more? & here's the crazy thought I had, could I put even less water & bake them??

try steel cut oats, they have more texture, and just add real maple syrup (not pancake syrup) and brown sugar

I'll see if they carry them at the health food store. Thanks!
oh beth! Steel cut oats are my absolute FAVE! I add figs, raisins, and
walnuts to mine; no sugar or syrup (I don't have much of a sweet
tooth). It sticks with you for hours and makes you feel really healthy
and energized. It's my anti-sin food: whenever I feel I've been a bit
too debacherous, eating a big heaping bowl of steel cut oats gets me
feeling nice and virtuous again.
Quaker instant oatmeal is kinda mushy. The advice to try other brands is good, there is a lot of difference.

Quaker's Weight Control oatmeal tends to be firmer, too. I like it better. If you don't use much water and let it sit for a minute, it becomes pretty thick.
Dont add so much water next time. The more water, the more the oatmeal absorbs. Or you could try grits, they aren't as "mushy". You could also try Irish Oatmeal and buy some brown sugar and add cinnamon, so good :)
phimegaphi,  we bought some fresh figs at the farmer's market today for the first time....omg, they were sooooo good!  we ate some raw, and then ate some broiled with some balsamic vinegar and low fat feta cheese....my husband says they are his new dessert request!  yummy ;-)
darc,

you may be able to find steel cut or irish oats in your regular grocery store.  look near the old fashioned rolled oats, maybe on the bottom or very top shelf.

thanks everyone for the great tips! I really do enjoy oatmeal, I just have a weird thing about mushy foods.
I can not recommend them enough, you totally must have Steel Cut Oats!
