oatmeal lovers club!
i looooooooove oatmeal. i eat it like twice a day! breakfast and in between meals as snacks!
what are your favorite brands and flavors? and how do you like your oatmeal?
my favoritie the high fiber cinnamon swirl and the strawberries and cream by quaker.
kashi ones have impressive nutritional values with protein and fiber, but i find them to be a bit bland!
Foreverme24, don't hold back..how do you really feel about oatmeal?...lol...
Mrsj, it could be that your metabolism is higher and burning more calories faster, or it could just be psychological if you eat the same thing for a long time...try mixing up your breakfasts a bit and see what happens or eat a little more...
I like quaker or great value quick oats! I make 1/2 c which is 150 calories and I like to top mine with cinnamon and splenda, diet swiss miss, or mix in some peanut butter! SO good! Oatmeal is love!
I kinda skimmed through these replies but does anyone put peanut butter in their oatmeal? Just curious how that would taste but a bit afraid to try it. Maybe even peanut butter and banana.

It's awesome. =) But don't mix-mix it in, or you'll barely taste it if you use a lot. Just stick it on top and spoon a little in each bite! =D

LOL. I usually dont hold back on my feelings for things I love.
Protein in oatmeal - IDS Vanilla Cinnamon is AMAZING in oatmeal. It takes the place of all flavoring. Just pop in half a scoop and stir after it's all cooked. Awesome.
Protein AND oatmeal - I never just eat a cup of oatmeal for breakfast; it's only 166 calories and I need a lot more than that! So I use 1 egg and 2-3 egg whites and make scrambled eggs in addition to my oatmeal. That way I get more protein and i still get my oats!
For those of you worried about protein or who don't want to eat an egg everytime they eat oatmeal, a half and half mixture of whole grain oats and oat bran, makes a creamy smooth breakfast, is about 150 calories, and is 22% protein, pretty close to most dietary recommendations already..
Hey everyone! So for as long as I can remember, I've eaten Quaker Instant Maple and Brown Sugar Oatmeal for breakfast (I'm 16 now.. so probably 13 years). I've turned into a bit of a health freak and decided to switch to the slow cooking oatmeal, and today was my first morning of making it. I guess all of those years of eating sugar loaded crap has messed my taste buds because it made me feel slightly queasy. I followed directions but for some flavor I added a tea-spoon of splenda brown sugar and a dash of regular splenda with a drop of honey. I also used a splash of 1% milk and found it to be.. sickly sweet but not sugary.. I can't describe it.
ANYWAYS my question: what is the best things to add to make it flavorful but not overboard? I kinda wanna try peanut butter and banana tomorrow..
Good for you Calenulax for getting more into healthy eating and for recognizing at such a young age that instant oatmeal is crap...lol. It probably wasn't the oatmeal that made you queasy, it was probably the artificial sweetener. If you are serious about eating healthy, that will have to go too. If can find pure powdered Stevia Extract, use that instead of artificial sweeteners. It's all natural, no calories and a little goes a long way. Try sweetening your oatmeal with frozen berries, cranberries, fresh fruit, molasses, honey, maple syrup, anything other than artificial sweeteners or refined sugar. I generally only use fruit and berries, and sometimes dried fruits like prunes or dates and that's all I need. Once you get away from sugar, you will find things taste sweeter anyway and won't need the artificials to begin with...
I love oatmeal too, and I eat it as a "dessert" since I'm trying to lose some weight. I don't care for the prepackaged flavoured oatmeal, as it's too sweet and the portions are tiny. I always buy the Quaker Oats Old Fashioned in the large containers and mix it myself. When I make it I don't follow the water to oatmeal proportions on the box since that makes it more watery than I like. I always use less water and cook it for less time so that the consistency is thick and still very oaty. My favourite way to eat it is to mix in a single serving apple sauce cup from White House (I get the Natural Plus kind with no added sugar that has 100% Vitamin C) and some cinnamon. I mix it all up, and it's delicious! Slightly tangly, mildly sweet, wonderful texture. It is a very filling and yummy treat. If I don't have any apple sauce to mix in, sometimes I'll use a chopped Granny Smith apple.
I eat oatmeal every morning. Sometimes it takes the form of oatmeal pancakes too - yummo. I love all sorts of mix-ins and toppings, and my favorite is probobly almond butter and cinnamon.
I don't usually buy a "brand name" oat, just whatever's cheapest at the store. Oats will be oats. ^_^
I eat oatmeal everyday - I use the Old Fashioned quick oats kind - I use 1/2 cup and mix in 6 oz of skim milk - heat it in the microwave for 1 mins 30 secs and when it's finished I sprinkle some splenda - YUM! One of my favs!
I normally pair this with a cup of blackberries or a banana.

Oh and sometimes I mix in 1/2 tsp of Whey Protein too.
I tried steel-cut today. Delicious!!
Added a mini-box of raisins to it and some cinnamon.
I had some issues cooking it though. It kept boiling over the pot...grr
Mmmm oats!
I get quaker golden syrup sachets, you bung them in the mircowave for 2minutes and it's done! I make them with water (I hate milk) and it's only 136 cals for a big bowl! I always add either maple syrup or honey on top and let it melt in the oats, then add a small sprinkle of brown sugar. I have the biggest sweet tooth, so this does me well!
I like oatbran or 5-grain hot cereal myself. I have oats of some sort every night before bed, and sometimes for breakfast too ^.^ My favorite combinations are canned pumpkin/dried cranberries/ brown sugar/ flaked coconut and banana/ fruit preserves/coconut, dried figs/flavored coffee cream for "dessert" oats. For breakfast oats, I like dried figs/cottage cheese/honey/almonds, banana/almonds/cottage cheese/orange marmalade, banana/cottage cheese/nutella or PB (with nutella, it should really be a dessert but I like it), blueberries/almonds/cottage cheese, blueberries/cottage cheese/PB. I have a million combinations, I know. I always put cottage cheese in if I have oats in the morning, for the protein kick. And I always add nuts (or now, nut butters!) I discovered putting preserves in oats is a really great way to sweeten it up and be able to change up the flavor even when all I've got in the house for a few days is bananas and PB.
Rebel, if we all had your flair and attitude towards experimentation with healthy foods, we'd all be better off..good for you!!!
mars: yeah i had issues with it in the beginning...i learned not to turni t up so high and you have to constantly keep stirring...
im so mad because i finally ran out of my steel cut oats and had a bunch of instant oatmeal packets in the cupboard...
...not the same. NOT THE SAME! never going back to instant or rolled ever again!
Oatmeal has got to be one of my absolute favorite foods! The longterm health benefits speak for themselves but it really is a pleasure just to enjoy a warm bowl of the stuff each day!
I eat oatmeal everyday for breakfast. Breakfast is consequently my favorite meal of the day. I go to sleep excited knowing that I'm going to have a bowl of oatmeal when I wake up! I've never really liked the prepackaged stuff. It's rolled oats, plain, all the way for me.
I've experimented with different combinations. I always stir in my two tablespoons of ground flaxseed. I usually prepare the oats with milk or soymilk and once I used orange juice. I usually chop up whatever fruits I have available and toss them in. I've recently been on a soymilk and banana fix. Chopped up bananas taste wonderful in oatmeal--very sweet! I've also used apples or blueberries before too. If I'm craving something sweet, I will use honey or syrup for my fix. If I'm feeling the salt, I will toss a pinch or two into my oats. I occassionally mix it up with ground cinnamon. On days when I'm really daring, I may chop up baker's chocolate or really bittersweet organic chocolate and cook it with my oats; it's quite filling, but then again, any time I have oatmeal, I am full for many hours. I think it also keeps me very regular.
I'm hoping to try some new combinations with my oatmeal. I've heard canned pumpkin or sweet potato goes great with oatmeal. I'd like to try preparing my oats with things like tea, plain nonfat yogurt, peanut butter jams or preserves, condensed milk, pudding, or granola in the future.
