does anyone think that is is beneficial or not beneficial to eat 1/2 cup oats every a.m. to help weight loss? high fiber whole grain food. and what does other's eat with it like fruit, milk and the amounts?

I see absolutely no harm in eating oatmeal everyday, as long as you don't get sick of it. It's got to be one of the healthiest foods!
I use 1/2 cup one minute oats and 1 cup 1% milk and 1/2 unsweetened applesauce. I spoon in a ton of cinnamon too, then microwave it for about 2 minutes.
Seriously, oatmeal is one of my favourite foods!
I love oatmeal. I usually mix a packet of Weight control Maple and Brown sugar with regular quick cooking one. It cuts down on the sweetness. Then put it on a whole grain toast or two. :) I really like the Alpine Valley bread they sell at costco.
I also sometimes mix Strawberry and Cream instant oatmeal, with a mix of Fat Free and low Fat Farmers cheese, and put that on a whole grain toast.

wow--you fix it exactly how I do but I also add 1 TB wheatgerm. while the oats are cooking in the pan (1/2 c oats and 1 c filtered water) I add 1 c fat free milk when they are almost cooked and the applesauce--or a fresh apple from my apple trees. lots of cinnamon and of course the wheat germ! but thought it was holding me back from steady weight loss--instead I increased the daily exercise and it's successful. thanks for your feedback! oats---for life--my farm animals live on oats--and grass---if I could go out and graze on grass I would add that into my diet too! lol
but you first cook the strawberry and cream instant oats first before mixing with the fat free and low fat farmers cheese?? hmmm...I'll have to try this, it sounds good.
Yep, first prepare according to the package. Let it seat for couple minutes to kool down a bit, and absorb all the water, then add the farmers cheese (tvorog).
Farmers cheese is actually kind of hard to find. I only seen Low fat version at Ralphs, and for Fat free I go to local Russian deli/store.

It's great that you're exercising more fervently, but oatmeal as detrimental to weight loss? It's high fiber, high bulk- low cal. I think it's actually a near perfect "diet" food!!!
the only reason I ? over doing the oats is because someone Iknow is into a strict diet and weight training. he thought that maybe it was just too much and that's why I had a slow weight loss and stand still for sometime. I don't understand that reasoning but realized that oats are the perfect morning fuel and just by adding exercise it changed the diet results w/o changing the oats.
you would think oats are top priority--I can't get enough. 1/2 cup is 150 cals 27 CB & 3 fats in the right direction to start the day. yes--near perfect diet food-I agree.
love pumpkin!!! vitamin A. the raisns I had to let go--it was topping me over the edge with the fruit sugar and CB. almonds--yes! I'll have to try the pumpkin for a variation.
i do oatmeal every morning. i do unsweetned cooked with water. about 1/2 cup oats with 1 cup water. it keeps me full for at least 3-4 hours.
i think oatmeal is completely beneficial to weight loss, and just in general, as well! i have it almost every morning. i sometimes have it with raisins, or peanut butter mixed in, or pumpkin and cinnamon mixed in. it's really great stuff!
i boil 1 cup water, add 1/2 cup oats. once they are almost cooked i add frozen blueberries and cinnamon. then i turn it down low so the blueberries can warm through and the oatmeal can thicken up. into a bowl it goes. i add splenda (trying to break the habit), maybe some almonds or a banana, and a splash of soymilk. I have put peaches, pumpkin...whatever you want really. i eat oatmeal most mornings. there is nothing wrong with eating oatmeal in the morning. it has great fiber and most nutritional experts agree it is best to eat most of your carbs in the morning anyway. if it works for you and keeps you full then no harm no foul right? do whats right for you
I could be wrong, but it seems to me in my reading that instant oatmeal doesn't have the fiber that regular oats do.
Personally I love oatmeal, but I also found a 6 grain with variety of stuff including oatmeal that has even more fiber. I eat one or the other everyday with flax and 1% milk...so good, so good for me!
Yep its about the best thing you can eat, but how you eat it is important, Im from NZ of scottish decent (scotland = the home of oats) and eating it with all that sugary crap every one puts on is totally stupid. Anyway I eat it every morning, half a cup of oats with 1 cup of water (no milk) half a teaspoon of salt and 3 minutes in the microwave. then I put about half a cup of super trim milk on it, no sugar, nothing sweet!
I do this EVERY morning, I dont get bored and I dont get hungry untill lunch. At lunch I eat more oats, but in the form of UN-toasted musli, I eat half a cup, essentially it is oats woth some dried fruit and seeds in it. I have that with half a cup of skim milk, a banana and an apple, its not refined so I stay full till dinner. I have lost 7kg, or roughly 14 pounds in less then 2 month, and not only that, my skin has cleared dramatically, I dont have a blemish in sight!
So I reccommend oats, but eat then the right way! theres next to no calories in it except what you pile on top!

Way to put everyone down who has different tastes.
I've been cheating by eating instant, but LOVE steel cut. With either I usually just mix in Spirutein Vanilla Protein powder...it's the only one I like the taste of. Sometimes I'll mix in cinnamon and other times I'll add fruit.
And yeah, I eat oatmeal almost every day for breakfast with a piece of fruit about 30 minutes later. Nothing else keeps me as full. I've lost over 20lbs since starting my days like this, so I highly recommend it as a healthy aid to weight loss.
sorry guys but 1/2 cup of oatmeal is not 150. It is 300 cals. Just wanted to clarify that.
Also, I strongly recommend steel cut oats not the instant one but that is up to you. some people don't have time to cook steel cut oats in the mornings.
Actually, 1/2 cup dry is 150 calories, 1 cup dry is 300 calories, but 1 cup dry makes 2 cups of prepared oatmeal, and even I can't eat that much oatmeal.
I make a smoothy every morning with oats, pumpkin, cocoa, ground flax seed, and either strawberries or bananas. I love oatmeal and never get tired or it.
Edited to correct spelling ;-)
I think it's the best breakfast. I eat oatmeal every morning and it keeps me full and gives me energy like nothing else does.
I measure out one third of a cup of oatmeal [wholegrain oat flakes (90%), wheat bran (10%)] and add about half a cup of skimmed milk. I microwave this for 2 minutes then stir in 1 teaspoon of unrefined raw sugar and sprinkle another one on the top, then add a scoop of freeze-dried acai berry. That's usually it, but today I threw in a handful of leftover blueberries.
some replies have mentioned making a smoothie with oats.
anyone have a recipe for that and are we talking raw oats?
Is it a fact that garlic helps with weight loss?
It is not a fact that garlic helps with weight loss; no studies have looked at garlic and weight loss in humans. One small study on... Read more
