does anyone think that is is beneficial or not beneficial to eat 1/2 cup oats every a.m. to help weight loss? high fiber whole grain food. and what does other's eat with it like fruit, milk and the amounts?

YES!! hot yummy porridge in the morning!! isn't it so wonderful every A.M.
I have bought irish oats and scottish oats that are actually called porridge. they are bigger, thicker and hardier. actually I find them more satisfying and fulfilling. they lay heavier in the stomach and last longer. so yummyyyyyyyy!
try the wheat germ on top--1 TB. you may like it.
what does everyone think of these different oats? my research has showed that old fashioned is the best and has all the nutrients. the quick oats are steamed and the a lot of fiber removed so your just eating a lump of carbs--BUT-- if you compare the package, they both have the same nutritional value--rather odd. I don't eat instant or microwaved foods--it must be cooked on the stove, even if I cook it and leave it in the frige for the next morning if I know I won't have time so I prepare it ahead of time...but it must be cooked on the stove.
INSTANT OATS
OLD FASHIONED OATS
QUICK OATS
I eat steel cut oats and 1/4 cup dry ( 40g) is 150 cals. what kind of oatmeal do you eat? maybe instant oatmeal is different.
Original Post by safina1:
sorry guys but 1/2 cup of oatmeal is not 150. It is 300 cals. Just wanted to clarify that.
Also, I strongly recommend steel cut oats not the instant one but that is up to you. some people don't have time to cook steel cut oats in the mornings.
You have sure caught my attention, and off to the oatmeal, Old fashioned not instant and it is 150 for 1/2 cup uncooked oats..............thank goodness!
I like Rogers Porridge - Other brands may have a similar product. It's old fashioned oatmeal with extra oat bran and flax seed in it. It's on this site if you want to get more nutritional info. I switched to this for breakfast instead of toast & butter to cut down the fat and to get more whole grains. I think the only difference between instant oatmeal and old fashioned is that the instant is ground finer. I don't think any bran is sifted out of the instant kind. I go to work early so I have time to cook the oatmeal at my office. Add boiling water and a tablespoon of raisins and let it sit until it's "cooked". It takes less than 5 minutes. It's chunkier than instant oatmeal. Last summer, my sister served it with raisins stirred into it and blueberries piled on top. Delicious.
steel cut classic oatmeal by country choice 1 serving 40 g -1/4 cup dry is 150 cals. search the food data on this website.
I do love oatmeal but down here its so warm that there are few days when i want something hot to eat. I usually ice my coffee!
and there is the fact that I L-O-V-E love LOVE grits with ground pepper for breakfast
but I eat the old fashioned kind--neither steel cut nor instant. I cook in the microwave--add the water and ZAP!!! Only one dish to wash!! and I most certainly do not add milk, blecth, no milk. but I like it with a little vanilla extract, or cinnamon, or allspice, or blueberries, or honey, or raisins... I am wondering how oatmeal would be with salt and pepper??? has anyone tried it???

I have no idea what you're eating but it sounds like a calorie rip off.

personally I hate oatmeal but since I'm doing the 1250 thing I ate it this morning. 1 packet of instant maple and brown sugar 160 calories and it wasn't half bad.
joanne811, safina1 This is why measuring dry ingredients by cup is a bad idea! The steel cut oatmeal is not the same as Old fashioned oatmeal. By volume it is less then Old Fashioned, but by weight it is the same amount of calories! So lets put this discussion to rest, ok?
UD
I usually just make my oatmeal and then top it with cinnamon and some vanilla soymilk!

Hi I gather oatmeal = porridge.
Yep its about the best thing you can eat, but how you eat it is important, Im from NZ of scottish decent (scotland = the home of oats) and eating it with all that sugary crap every one puts on is totally stupid. Anyway I eat it every morning, half a cup of oats with 1 cup of water (no milk) half a teaspoon of salt and 3 minutes in the microwave. then I put about half a cup of super trim milk on it, no sugar, nothing sweet!
I do this EVERY morning, I dont get bored and I dont get hungry untill lunch. At lunch I eat more oats, but in the form of UN-toasted musli, I eat half a cup, essentially it is oats woth some dried fruit and seeds in it. I have that with half a cup of skim milk, a banana and an apple, its not refined so I stay full till dinner. I have lost 7kg, or roughly 14 pounds in less then 2 month, and not only that, my skin has cleared dramatically, I dont have a blemish in sight!
So I reccommend oats, but eat then the right way! theres next to no calories in it except what you pile on top!
This sounds interesting. I eat oats by adding 1/2 tea spoon of salt, 10 whole peanuts, and add water and cook it in the microwave at work. I use the original oats that cooks in about 3 minutes. I also eat hard boiled eggs (without Yolk) on the side. Sometimes in the Oats I add 1/4 cup of mixed veges. It tasts really good. Now, my question is UN-Toasted Musli? Do we get it here in the US?
I try to eat oatmeal for breakfast most days, it tastes like crap but it keeps you full for so long.
I just buy the quaker oats that you add water to, and it comes in different flavours.
Microwave the real thing and it won't taste like "crap"! Regular oats with raisins, walnuts, honey wheat germ, a little of the almost butter spray and it is very good! Try it , you will like it!
I think eating oatmeal every morning is good and its not that bad in calories or carbs. I eat oatmeal every morning, I love it.
I eat skim milk and honey with it. 100ml of skim milk and 1/2 a teaspoon of honey.
I really love eating steal cut oats cooked with unsweetened silk soy milk and a teaspoon of honey. Lately though, I've switched to the instant variety (I've been too lazy to make it to the store and pick up more steel cut oats since I ran out) which I make with water, 1/2 oz of raisins and craisins each, some salt, a teaspoon of honey and a bit of cinnamon on top. I like the fact that I can put all the stuff in the bowl the night before and just add water in the morning and eat. Saves the time I spend weighing out all the ingredients.
Yes, let me tell you..it's a traditional Guatemalan trick to put 2 tablespoons of raw oatmeal in an 8 oz glass of water, and let it sit for about 10 minutes while the oatmeal "soaks'. Then, gulp it down. You may need a spoon at some point to also be able to consume the "clumpy" oatmeal. Guatemalans call it "mosh". Yes, it sounds disgusting. The taste isn't all that winning either. However, I've done it religiously for 1 year know, and have been able to maintain my weight at 110/111 lbs and I FEEL GREAT!!! I also eat an orange every morning along with my raw, clumpy, watery oatmeal concoction, because it keeps your bowel movements regular. The reason why I eat raw, clumpy oatmeal in the morning is because it has soluble fiber that, when raw, have more fat-burning properties as opposed to consuming the oatmeal when cooked. It is also said to reduce cholesterol better than eating a bowl of Cheerios every morning. It's been my experience that when I eat the raw, clumpy oatmeal, along with an orange, and some toasted raisin bread, I do not really feel hungry until lunchtime.
I dont know what I would do without Oatmeal! I too eat it EVERY morning and have wondered the same thing if I should switch it up. Even some morenings when im not that hungry I still HAVE to have it...maybe its become a habit? I usually mix oatmeal and oatbran together if I have both and I like to add as much water as possible so the oats soak up as much as they can. I add tons of cinnamon alittle light vanilla soy milk and strawberries if I have them. So good and simple. Keeps me satisfied for awhlie and greattt before a long workout.
