Oatmeal oatmeal oatmeal. I need fresh ideas...

Quote  |  Reply

Hello! I'm sure this is a repeat topic, but I can't seem to find any previous posts!

I was wondering what YOU put in your oatmeal. What are your favorite toppings?

I really feel like being adventurous :) So hit me with your best ideas haha. I don't care the calories either... because I usually like to have a 300-500 calorie breakfast to jumpstart a day. I find oatmeal really filling, which is good.

thank you!

I add all kinds of things to oatmeal - both savory and sweet.  For sweet: pumpkin, cut up apples, peaches, blueberries, mashed banana, apple sauce, sliced almonds, walnuts, greek yogurt, cottage cheese, cinnamon, apple pie spice, pumpkin pie spice, unsweetened cocoa, caramelized ginger, nut butters of all types.  For savory: I make it either broth or water (or a combination), toppings range from scallions & soy sauce, sunny side egg (with runny egg yolk), asian hot sauce, cut up or shredded chicken, shrimp, pesto, spinach, crushed red peppers, bell peppers, tomato sauce...sky's the limit.

I love oatmeal (well, oat bran cereal, actually) and have it for lunch daily (along with a piece of fruit and/or raw veggies).  The things I mix into it change every day, though, to keep it interesting :)

ETA: For savory oatmeal, I usually prefer something like Steel Cut oats for more texture.

Ready?

Ok:

  • Banana (melt it in the micro before)
  • Coconut
  • Chocolate/Carob/Peanut butter/Butterscotch/White chocolate chips
  • Nut butter
  • Dried fruits: Cranberries, Raisin, Prunes, Apricots, Pineapples, Mango...
  • Fresh fruits: Blueberries, Strawberries, Apple/Applesauce
  • Pumpkin
  • Nuts (you can try flavored ones: vanilla almonds, cocoa roasted almonds...)

Some oats recipes: Oats, Swiss Oats

Some combos:

  • Cherries + Chocolate
  • Strawberries + Chocolate
  • Coconut + Chocolate
  • Banana + Chocolate
  • Banana + PB + Honey
  • Pumpkin + Raisins
  • Dried Fruits + Nuts
  • Caramel + Apple

And I could go on like this forever.

  • Nuts (you can try flavored ones: vanilla almonds, cocoa roasted almonds...)
  • Coconut

Ooh!  Thanks for the great ideas!  Never thought of adding flavored nuts!

I've got sooo many combos, but it will take a while to post them all. So I'll tell you what I've had over the last few days:
+ grated apple, walnuts, cinnamon, raisins and honey - yum!
+ fresh blueberries, dried cranberries and roasted pumpkin seeds [this was simple, but it tasted pretty nice]
+ even just crunchy pb with oatmeal is yum

sometimes I add yogurt in; it makes in extra creamy and delicious!

has anyone tried it with sweet potato before?

Oh yes, for savory Steel Cut is the way to go. I also add in tvorog, or cottage cheese, and strong flavored cheddar cheese. For example horseradish cheddar cheese I find in Costco sometimes. I also discovered Tahini paste recently, so going to try that. I was thinking "hummus" but with steel cut oat instead of chickpeas.

i don't mean to sound stuck up but i consider myself to be a master at weird and tasty oats combinations....

grated zucchini, dark chocolate, ginger, cinnamon and walnuts (like chocolate zucchini loaf)

fresh pureed pumpkin, banana, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, peanutbutter and topped with cranberries (Favourite combo in a green smoothie)

banana and topped with frozen blueberries, yoghurt, maple syrup and toasted coconut

banana, dates, walnuts (makes it like banana bread)

baklava: dried fruits, pistachios and walnuts, cinnamon and rosewater topped with greek yoghurt and honey

and my favourite topping to any hot oatmeal..... ICE-CREAM! gosh it makes it taste like a desert.....

ice-cream tastes really good with the chocolate zucchini one with crumbled biscotti

if you wan apple pie with ice-cream than

chopped apple, cinnamon, walnuts then ice-cream and crumbled cookies!!! .... no need to explain how good it is!

there are endless combinations for your oats.... seriously go frieken crazy! i love oats man!

I love oatmeal in the cooler months.  I add a bit of butter,  1 tsp or so, and a little dark brown sugar.   I like raisins,  dried cranberries,  blueberries, bananas.

pumpkin...hum, will have to try that....

Yup. Pretty good, but I don't remember what else I put in the bowl...

I heard some people even tried butternut squash ;)

Another add-ins:

  • Yogurt covered raisins

Very good oatmeal recipes (plus others - a great section on french toast too)

Every Saturday, I make "chocolate cookie" oatmeal for my boys - very simple, it's just oatmeal prepared normally, only mixing in a packet of hot cocoa mix, a pinch of salt, and a dash of vanilla and cinnamon.

Yum!

Do a forum search in the Recipes forum.  There are a few long threads about oatmeal

Pure maple syrup, cinnamon & pecans would pair well with sweet potato puree.

Pumpkin and cinnamon

ooh yum, I think I'll try this tomorrow
sounds delicious!

oh and this morning I had carrot and ginger oatmeal, with walnuts and maple syrup. I'm pretty pleased with the result :)

My favorite is bircher muslei, a nice alternative to cooked oatmeal:

soak some oats (1/3- 1/2 cup, whatever you like) in boiling water to cover for at least 15 min (or overnight)

grate in 1/2 to 1 apple

mix in ~1/2 cup plain yogurt

add almonds/walnuts and blueberries (frozen or fresh).

drizzle with pure maple syrup

--any of the amounts can be adjusted to make your target breakfast calories and you can add in extra protein powder if you want even more of a protein kick! Delish!

hey thanks everyone for the feedback!

I looked on katheats.com and there are a ton of good recipes there too!

pumpkin, maple syrup, and pupmkin pie spice

banana, strawberries, and yogurt...reminds me of summer :)

cocoa powder and stevia or honey, tastes like a really delicious chocolate oatmeal cookie. :P

peanut butter

*I also add 2 tablespoons of flaxseed for the health benefits in all of these, but that's totally optional. :)

1 tbsp peanut butter, 1 tsp maple syrup.
