I'm not American, so I'm not really passionate about the election, not to mention that I'm not a big fan of either Obama or MCCain, but this is actually quite funny...

Too thin or just right? Or "size does not matter"? Is this important to you at all? What do you think?
Disclaimer: I'm not intending to offend anyone, it's just that from European perspective the Americans pay attention to such ridiculous (sorry) details or aspects of their politicians that I'm genuinely interested whether Obama's weight might REALLY affect his chances...
Edit: corrected the typo in "passionate". I hate typos, especially my own ones ![]()
That is hilarious! I'm also not an American, but I would think that if he loses votes with some voters for being too thin, he has an advantage with others due to the fact that he is FAR better looking than McCain!
Also, is it just me, or does McCain really remind anyone of Steve Martin??
absolutely, positively ridiculous. this coming from an American: we are so **** up. we must be some of the least educated, most resentful, FAT, and some how feel more entitled, than anyone...
Back to the OP... I don't think Obama is too thin but I wouldn't base my vote on his appearance anyway.
Resentful of what, yogini?
the average american seems to feel resentful of life in general; that they should be entitled to something more, better. i am a cynical american who is tired of the "culture" (or indeed, lack thereof) of this country; this is simply my opinion and i have no need or care for you to agree with me.
And feelings of entitlement and resentment are not the same thing.
Whoo, someone got up on the wrong side of the bed. Simple question, Yogini, didn't seem to be a personal attack.
As far as Obama-- people keep saying he's attractive and I seriously don't see it! But I do think he's too thin.
Will any of that affect the way I vote? No. But if I had two candidates who were equally qualified and one was more attractive/fit the mold in my head of what a candidate looked liked better, etc. I think anyone would be hard pressed to not instinctually prefer one over the other. Its not a negative thing, simply human nature, no matter how much we attempt to deny it. We are attracted to attractive things, attractive people tend to do well in politics because they represent something we both admire and want to be.
And Americans can be ridiculous but I think if they were going to be stupid about appearance, being too "thin" might be an good excuse for much more backwater reasons.
I think Obama is a very attractive man (not too thin), but that plays no role in my decision on who to vote for.
I opened this thread while the news on TV was running a story about the personal attacks aganist Obama - apparently some feel that Obama appears to be 'too perfect' and they are exploting this to distract people from voting on the real issues.
Friggin seriously?! *still in a state of disbelief*
Oh - he's not just too thin to be President, he's just simply too fit.
For cryin' out loud, the Wall Street Journal is getting into this fluff.
Just more signs that the media wouldn't know real news analysis if it landed on their face and tattooed a headline on their forehead.
Although, on the other hand, it can be a positive sign. Is this really all they have? Seriously? Let's see - he's absolutely JUST like Paris and Brittney, and wow - he works out? SOOOO completely out of touch...We don't want that on a dollar bill....like, that would totally disrespect the Founding Fathers, and you know he wouldn't be wearing a flag pin. Whah....health care?? I have no idea what you're talking about....

If I was to vote on attractiveness level I'd go for Edwards. Did anyone see him on the cover of Newsweek a few months ago (the black and white pic)? *drool*
Obama is way hot, incredibly smart, and almost (almost!) as liberal as I'd like him to be. But most of America is fat, pinkish white, and shops at WalMart. I hate this place and fully plan to be an ex pat someday.

Blanketing America with such a reaching statement and then declaring you're giving up is not what either liberalism philosophy or Obama would suggest. That is, if you followed classic liberal philosophy or cared about what Obama believes - if not, then it's your choice, obviously. I hope you have better experiences here before you decide to "liberate" yourself.
This cracked me up:
[John] Kerry was successfully depicted by Republicans as an effete, windsurfing, brie-eating, French-speaking fop.
Anyway, there was one thing in that "news" article that I sadly must agree with. If Obama wants votes, he'd better eat that proffered slice of deep-fried, lard-iced cake. Americans get extra pissy with people who don't share their bad habits.
I personally think Obama is hot hot HOT. That's not why I plan to vote for him, of course. He could be purple and three-headed as long as he's not a Republican.
I heard about this on the UK news, how ridiculous!
santonacci - While I wouldn't have put it that way, I know what todeinotaton means. There are many times where I've considered leaving this country because I don't agree with what is going on here. While I often feel like this is "giving up," at the same time I have the right to make myself happy and give up if I want to. Sometimes it feels like nothing is going to change and the only way I can live is to leave! All the philantrophy, protests, and public speech I want to make has little to no influence on any one else and why should it, if we're all entitled to our opinions?
It is good that you don't feel that way. I wish I was more content with the state of things and didn't have to look for an escape. But then again I am way more liberal than any of the candidates that have run in my voting experience, and it is disgusting to have them spit on for being a too liberal heathen. What does that make me? When I am MORE liberal than them?
Maybe if more people valued the differences in people even if they didn't agree we would be able to have more positive experiences before liberating ourselves.
And, by the way, The Wall Street Journal is now owned by Rupert Murdoch. What do you expect? He's a classic example of everything that's wrong - he has no alligences and will just do whatever to make money. I'd rather you have a stance, even different than mine, than no stance at all. But you could also appreciate that I have a stance different from yours.
he's a slim guy, but i wouldn't say he was too thin. he's not sickly or anything. it's funny; women are harped on all the time for being too thin, but that rarely happens with men.
all in all, i'm sure his weight will have no bearing on whether or not he's elected.
