Can an obese person have anorexic thoughts?
Asked by anonymous on Feb 04, 2009 in Eating Disorders

When I was much younger I experienced some anorexia for a very short time when I was eating very little and throwing up. I was also a cutter at one point in my life. Now, I find myself having strange thoughts again. I am still eating up to my 1700 calories and over. What do you think is going on with me? It feels strangely familiar and weird. I don't know quite how to explain it all. Those old thoughts are a bit scary.

Answer

Anyone can have eating disordered thoughts, especially if an eating disorder was experienced in the past.  At times of vulnerability, such as the death of a relative or graduation from college, old coping mechanisms resurface, no matter how dysfunctional.  Eating disordered thoughts take the focus away from the stress, but they create two problems instead of one.  It sounds like you have an opportunity for personal growth. Work with a mental health therapist to make sense of your thoughts, and read about eating disorder triggers at About.com.
