So today at work, I work at a gym btw, we were talking about weight.

One of my co-workers, a male who is homosexual about 5'7 and 170 pounds, not chubby or overweight by any means...asked how much i weighed.

I asked him to guess and he said about 17 pounds more than I actually weigh, but he thinks I'm quite thin and if I lost 10 pounds I would be invisible. Clearly, that isn't true because 10 pounds less than his guess is still 7 pounds more than my actual weight.

At first I got all bent out of shape and a but hurt because I'm in maintenance and overall I'm happy with my body now, but the frightened me. Then I realized that people don't see weight in terms of a number...so when people want people to "guess their weight" and play games like that it's really not productive because we all have a different frame of reference so it's very difficult to do.

I later on asked a female coworker who is 5'1 and closer to my stats to guess my weight, guess what?? she guessed it within 5 pounds...so i realized that it's not about a weight in terms of how others see us, it's just thin vs. chubby, pretty vs. ugly, black vs. white. people don't see the number yet we fixate on it like crazy.

maybe we should just relax a bit...maybe? just a thought.

its really just a number, its very hard for someone to guess unless they are near the same size as you. my g/f asked me to guess her weight. i though oh crap im doomed now ! so i just said something ridiculous, i said umm 195 ? shes actually 80 pounds...

I just played itsafe and said something silly !

rather then focusing on him guessing 17 pounds off, focus on him saying you looked quite thin !

and before anyone has a kiniption fit about my g/f being 80 pounds, shes over 2 feet shorter then i am...

I definitely agree. It really is just a number. People hold their weight differently, so it really shouldn't matter what OTHERS think your weight might be.

I'm 325lbs, but people are amazed and in complete disbelief when I tell them that, but only because I hold my weight so well cause I'm 6'2". So when people guess my weight is lower than that, it makes me feel good. Even if somebody guessed I was MORE than 325, I'd still feel good in knowing that I'm NOT more than 325. So it works out both ways for me. :)

I think people (women especially since we tend to get down on ourselves a bit more) should focus more on losing weight and being fit for our health and to feel good, not so much for the number on the scale. Even though I know I'm fat, and the scale knows I'm fat, and the world knows I'm fat, there are days when I feel thin and I feel good. That's what we need to focus on: feeling good!

So there. :P

mztenderheart02 I totally agree with you! I am the same height as you and started out at a similar weight (330) and people were/are shocked when I told them how much I weighed because I carried it sooo well. People are shocked when I say I've lost so much weight because they never saw that I was so heavy in the first place- it's disbelief.

I have done it for health reasons, and for confidence. I am pleased to say both have improved. I do have a target 'number' but I won't be too obsessed over reaching it.

I agree that people shouldn't obsess over numbers, BMI's etc. It's all bull really. It's hard not to compare yourself to others, you should applaud yourself for your sucesses.

I agree. I have terrible perception when it comes to things like picturing weight. Like, if someone were to say "Oh I'm whatever height and amount of pounds," while others might be like "Wow, that's unhealthy," I'm sitting there wondering '...is that a lot?' haha Plus people obviously have different body types and whatnot.

I would NEVER be able to predict someone's weight. God, I hope nobody ever asks me that.
