Obsessed with Bad Foods

Quote  |  Reply

Hi Guys,

I recently joined and I'm not completely used to this yet.  I seem to have a very weird obsession, almost OCD-like, with ice cream.  I don't know why, but that is the one food I consistently binge upon.  I am not overweight yet, but I know that I will definitely be if I don't stop.  Have any ideas?

I could have written that myself.  I totally understand!!  I can't open an ice cream container without finishing it.  How bad is that.  I have found a substitute for everything else I used to eat, but can't seem to find something to replace my ice cream.  I have come to the conclusion that I have to accept it as a flaw and figure out a way to incorporate it.

I used to try the whole "have a little everyday", but that doesn't do it for me.  Good for those that it works for though:)  So I've made a deal with myself.  Once every 2 weeks, I allow myself to splurge, guilt free.  I exercise and eat right for every meal and snack, there is no reason why I can't reward myself with an unhuman serving of ice cream once in a while Smile

If you ever figure out something else, please share.  Better yet, I think I'll just keep my ice cream.

What you eat is your own choice and there's nothing intrinsically wrong with ice-cream as an occasional treat.   What I would suggest to you, however, is that because you're only 125-130lbs and therefore a very slim weight for someone 5'5" that you shouldn't 'go on a diet'.  When someone is already quite low in weight any restriction of energy/calories will make it more likely that they'll look for sugary foods (like ice-cream) to top up their energy levels

Aim for 2000 cals a day (more if you're under 21 or particularly active), enjoy a balanced diet (including a little ice-cream from time to time) and be as active as possible.  Then you'll maintain your healthy weight.

And, in the meantime, don't buy ice-cream in large amounts..  If it's not there, you can't eat it.

That's so true; however, my parents love the way I can literally eat a whole gallon easily and still be able to run after.  I wish I could say that I can leave it in the freezer, but I still have not shown that much control.  I don't really want to "go on a diet"...if this continues I probably won't be able to remain my current weight!

Your parents love what?...  You're not a performing seal doing the 'eat the ice-cream and go for a run trick' to entertain them, are you? ....  If you're worried about the amount of ice-cream you eat, explain that to your parents and ask them to stop buying it by the gallon.  If you're OK with gaining weight and eating ice-cream to amuse people then carry on as you are.  No-one's stopping you.

I just discovered that a lot of brands make individual serving sizes of ice cream. They are about $1 each, which is a little much but oh well. I just bought some Ben & Jerry's, Starbucks, and another.. maybe Haagen Dazs? So yummy. Good for portion control.

I came to suggest those.  If you're having a problem with ice cream, then ask your parents if they could keep it out of the house.  Every now and then you can buy and individual serving.   Ice cream's really not that terrible for you if you don't eat it all the time.  It makes a good treat.

Thanks for all of the solutions...I will try!

I also have the issue of loving ice cream and not knowing when to stop if I'm eating right  out of the container.  What has worked for me is single serving novelty ice cream treats.  Since you don't really need to lose weight the regular calorie ones might be fine for you.  However, if you want ones that are lower in calorie Skinny cow make a whole bunch of them: ice cream bars, drumstick like cones, ice cream sandwiches.  They taste good and are creamy.   Also weight watchers has individual serving cups of ice cream, although I find them to be less creamy.

That's a good idea too.  By the way, my parents do like to make me "perform"...I think it surprises them that I can eat that much and still keep to my weight so far.

I too am an ice cream addict, and having a little does nothing for me either!  Some things that have really helped me are:

frozen cool whip free (the whole container is only 500 calories, which is way less than ice cream),

red mango frozen yogurt (yum!),

and popsicle brand fudgecicles and creamsicles (they make 60 cal white chocolate, dark chocolate, and milk chocolate fudgecicles, and 20 calories... yes only 20 calorie creamsicles that are sugar free and amazing!)

I would suggest eating gelato instead of ice cream. Imo, it seems to be more filling. I got some peanut butter chocolate gelato and I would only have 1/4-1/2 a cup and would feel satisfied.

After the gelato was gone I bought a pint of regular Rocky Road ice cream and ate almost the whole container, but didn't have the same 'satisfied' feeling. From now on it's gelato for me!

I, too, seem to have the inability to control myself regarding ice cream (it's really sad).  The creamsicles and fudgsicles are a good idea, kind of like easing off a bad habbit.  I've never tried gelato, though I have heard about Wow Cow.  Do you know if Wow Cow exists in Illinois or any other similar brand?

Single serving containers of ice cream are available at walmart in 10 packs.  You could also try to wait a week and stop at somewhere like Braums for a cheap single scoop sundae pretty cheaply.
