Odd Sensation After Eating Apples

Quote  |  Reply

I just started eating apples more recently. I never had them as a kid [excluding apple juice, apple cider] and I can't stand them!

Whenever I eat them normal [like biting straight into them] I get the sensation they are tearing my gums apart and make my teeth actually HURT. I have great dental health [one im actually proud of!] and brush 2-4 times daily and no weakening of enamal [as of 3 wks ago]. Also after eating them I feel like I want to itch the back of my throat [I tried and ended up gagging myself, I'm stupid; I know]

I've also tried cutting them up and eating them, softening them and all types of things.

What's my problem?

Perhaps you should get checked to make sure you aren't allergic to them? (Itching in the throat can be an allergic reaction). I don't know what to say about the teeth/biting into them problem (are you eating them cold, right out of the fridge? Cold foods can sometimes make sensitive teeth ache).

I get that feeling with pears.  I've always assumed I'm just mildly allergic.  Cutting them up into smaller chunks I can chew with my molars has kept me eating them though.
It depends on the apple.  Some are quite acidic, for example.  And if it's hurting your teeth to bite into one, it could be underripe.  Others have a high level of tannin and that can leave an aftertaste or a feeling at the back of the throat in the same way as very strong tea or some cheaper red wines.  It's probably not an allergy...

You  might want to try taking some benedryl before eating an apple and see if that helps.  I have a number of food allergies, with some (like tree nuts) which are very strong and others which just cause itching in my mouth and throat.  (For example, oyster sauce - I'll take an antihistimine before having it, and I don't have a reaction.)  If the benedryl helps, definitely see an allergist and find out if there are any other allergies you might have!  And always have benedryl and an epi pen on hand, just in case.

Good luck!

It definitely sounds like an allergy. Apples are in the same bontanical family as some of the culprits behind seasonal allergies. Some people show mild allergic symptoms like mouth discomfort and an itchy throat.

Here is an article that talks about it: http://www.cbc.ca/health/story/2006/05/03/fru it-allergy060503.html

I am so glad you posted this. Like the article says, I always thought I was allergic to a pesticide or something on the fruit. I have no food allergies, and neither does anyone in my family. I do get seasonal allergies, though. When I eat any fruit with the skin I get a swollen, itchy mouth, throat & lips  - apples, pears, peaches, ect. Appleas are the worst, so I usually don't eat them and I peel everything else - even grapes, and it helps a bit. I like to stick to more citrus-y fruits (they are fine to me) but now I am going to try taking Caritin or something beforehand (not bendryl, it knocks me out). Thanks for the help! And good luck to you,

Erica
