How do I get off of a weight loss plateau?
Asked by anonymous on Nov 11, 2008 in Eating Disorders

I have tried altering my nutritional habits, sometimes to the extreme with no success. In addition, I’ve upped my exercise as much as possible and added cross training. I lost about 10 pounds and then it just stopped at 145 lbs. I dance ballet and hip hop professionally and my body is very muscular, but for my height of 5'6", I think I could lose another 5-10 lbs and be great. Any tricks to ending the plateau w/o being anorexic?

Answer

You probably stopped losing weight because you are at your natural set point for 'this point set in time'.  Don’t bother using a scale to assess your weight; measure your body composition instead.  Muscular athletes are surprisingly heavy but they not overly fat.  Your BMI of 23 is already in the healthy weight range.  Allow the wisdom of the body to regulate your weight. Change your focus to eating a balanced diet according your hunger and satiety, instead of dieting. Switch to the Intuitive Eating approach to food for lifelong weight control. Work on your body image so you can learn to love the body you have.
