wow, let's trade jobs!

i'd be pulling my hair out, that sounds tempting- I think you should get a paid half-day off because of the emotional distress involved in resisting temptation ;)

I know ... on some levels you're like "wow, my employers brought in a gourmet feast for us ... what a-holes!"

and to make matters worse, everyone is telling me to grab a bite to eat, but i refuse...i'd rather spend $10 at the healthfood store on spaghetti squash and steamed vegetables (not really..at all)

Can you pick some veggies out of the pasta salad or are they covered in oily dressing?

Sometimes it's good to just have a drink and socialize with co-workers, or put some food on a plate and push it around for 10 minutes before running off to the health shop!

Ha! I've been resisting left over muffins, bagels and danishes all morning, so I'm right there with ya!! I'm prob not going to last all day tho.....I usually manage to convince myself that free food is calorie free too! ;)

lilc3: I heard the same thing about free being calorie free, too! This month I went to a week-long conference with elaborate buffet lunches included. After all that "free" food and no scale for a week, I came home to find gravity has shifted and my scale reads 5 lbs heavier...

amonaco: You've got incredible willpower. However, sharing good food with friends/colleagues and occasionally overindulging are part of a healthy and balanced lifestyle.... just don't say that every day for a week, like I did!

I am right there with you.  My company seems to think that cake is the multipurpose food answer to everything that happens in the building.    Retirements, baby showers, promotions, anniversaries. There's big sheet of cake in our conference room just about every day.  Ankle deep in cake.

I eat the strawberries off the top and leave the rest.  Then I scowl at people who look like they're going to ask me why I'm not eating the cake, and they don't ask.  It's kinda fun.

I try to keep a cliff bar in my desk, or some fruit too.  You'd be surprised at how people leave you alone if you're munching on an apple while they're power slamming the refined sugar.  As long as you're stuffing your face with something, they'll accept.

I have an office just like that. The trick is if everyone is bringing something in bring in a healthy dish so you can eat with everyone else. Or if you simply can't resist then just take enough for a bit or two and add it to your calories for the day. Just make sure you are only 'sampling' things

I am lucky.  My office has made a big committment to wellness, and most of our catered lunches are healthful (wraps that are very light on dressing, salads with dressing on the side, etc).  There's pizza or cake from time to time.  I have no problem resisting the pizza, but with cake, I usually settle for a couple of bites.  We're actually having a potluck healthy lunch tomorrow.  Cool

Maybe you could form a wellness committee at work to help with such things?

All the talk of cake reminds me of the Seinfeld where Elaine had had it with cake, and then by the end, she'd not only broken down, but she ate that ancient cake...  Surprised  I hope you all have better luck than that!

On top of the usual treats people bring in to share or birthday cake or leftovers from a catered lunch...which is all bad enough...last week was employee appreciation week and every day that had an event. There was Ice Cream Day, Pizza Day, and Chocolate Day. I saw the pictures, they were food orgies. And this from an agency that is supposed to be promoting health and fitness. Ack.

I didn't go to any of the events, and felt really bad about it, because I am still new here and really should have gone to socialize. But I just couldn't face it. I have been to an event or two here where if you don't have a peice of cake, at least 10 people ask you Why no cake? Here's some cake! Here take this CAKE EAT IT so I know the pressure that can happen. I really like sharpey's idea about eating an apple, no one will ask the fat girl why she's eating an apple instead of cake right??

ughh i know how you feel. once a month we have a lunch on the company day which i am in charge of ordering... of course, no one wants anything healthy LOL so i am always ordering pizza, wings, etc... then they ask me why i'm not eating it! wellllll im trying my best not to but i know if i cave in i'll hate myself later! lol.

Hehehe.  I totally know how you feel!  But here's what I do: I snicker at them.  No joke!  At my school we always have muffins and donuts for free, so every time I see one of my friends eating one (and looking at me like I'm a freak for not having one), all I think about is "Yeah, enjoy it while it lasts, because in five minutes it'll be out of your mouth and in your waist!"  Kind of evil, I know, but it works. :D

xoxoxo Okie

I'm the secretary in a research lab which studies ageing.  A lot of the research points out that a healthy and varied diet leads to a long, healthy life.....

Which is why there are chocolate biccies every Friday and cakes when it's someone's birthday...  Undecided

I hate avoiding the kitchen area at those times but I have to because I LOVE chocolate and will give in to temptation.  So for my next birthday, I'm bringing in lots of seasonal fruits Laughing

We also hold seminars and meetings here and sometimes there's food left over - the last one had chocolate dipped strawberries.... HEAVEN!!  I had a couple...  or maybe it was closer to 6....  Probably more like 8 though....  Yell

I just got invited out to lunch with my coworkers and just said "yes!" right away because I was so happy to be included ... and then in my head "damn, there goes my healthy packed lunch." Trying to figure out how to change my mind politely ...
