official oatmeal thread!
Chopped green apple
Canned pumpkin
Blueberries
Grapes
A tsp of cocoa powder with splenda (7 added calories, and a rich chocolaty taste!)
Anybody got any new ideas? I've decided on oatmeal for dinner and was wondering how it would be on a sweet potato...? (I'm weird, i know! :-D)

I eat steel cut oats every morning. Only thing i add is ground flax seed, cinnamon, nutmeg and either thawed frozen blueberries or dried figs. The figs bring up the calories quite a bit, so thats not very often.
If you are looking to add something sweet try apple sauce instead of sugar.
Since steel cut oats are the best oatmeal you can put in your body but take forever to cook, try making a big batch and reheat each serving in the morning. :)
I eat them every morning too! I also make a big batch and then just reheat some in the microwave. I can't go back to quick oats because I love the steel cuts so much. (I even wake up early every morning because I get excited to eat some) :)
I add protein powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and splenda.
I just added 2 tablespoons of ground flaxseed to my maple & brown sugar instant oatmeal (yes I know it's not the healthiest for you but it's so much easier to make at work!) and I really liked it. Way better than mixing the flaxseed in my yogurt.
i eat oatmeal for breakfast a few mornings a week; but i usually add different things every time. some of my favorites are applesauce and cinnamon, yogurt, blueberries, raisins or raspberries. like i said, it varies everytime.
but i always make my oatmeal (now) with organic vanilla silk. it gives it SUCH a good, creamy taste. it beats making it with water or regular milk by far, in my opinion.
switching my breakfast to oatmeal pretty much jump started my weight loss (i used to eat bowls upon bowls of cereal)... i eat the quaker weight control oatmeal, keeps me pretty full until lunch. I'm just annoyed because although they sell regular instant quaker oatmeal in bulk at my local wholesale club, they don't sell the weight control one... and at the grocery store its like nearly $4 a box!! ![]()
Does soy milk or yogourt curdle when you add it to oatmeal?
if you have a sweet tooth and like to eat dessert for breakfast :P then try this...i deff reccommend it cos its sooooo goood!!!
1/2 cup (40g) wholegrain oats
1/2 chopped banana
1 scoop protein powder(i reccommend the banana flavour but vanilla or choc will also do)
1 soft ginger kiss cream cookie (crumble 1 piece and mix into oatmeal when cooking and leave the other piece to crumble for garnish on top of oatmeal)
1 teaspoon chocolate spread for topping of oatmeal
cook your oats in the water for 6 to 8 minutes till their tender with a soft chewy texture then stir in banana, protein powder, crumbled ginger cookie. once oatmeal is made you can add the rest of the ginger cookie and chocolate spread for topping..

I also soak them in water overnight.
That would be why.
I was going to try adding protein powder to my oatmeal, but I was worried it would just end up being a thick gritty mess, its quite a scoop of powder for just the bowl I was eating.
I love my oatmeal made with milk, it just doesnt taste the same with water but so many people here seem to just cook it in water instead? Milk gives it a nice flavour I think.
My favorite two concoctions are...
- Cooked with an overripe banana, a ton of cinnamon, a teensy tiny pinch of salt and a blob of peanut butter or almond butter on the top to dip spoonfuls of oatmeal into.
- Made with some canned pumpkin, a little brown sugar, a lot of cinnamon, a little ground ginger, a tiny pinch of salt and a few crushed walnuts and a few raisins.
I challenge anyone to be a bigge advocate for oatmeal than I am..... I've "converted" enough of my friends, co workers and family that I firmly believe I could have a job for Quaker.
When it comes to additions, I love new ideas. Recently though, I've been getting back to basics. I've begun to soak my oats over night in water that is either infused with citurs zest, or brewed flavored teas. I also love freshly greated ginger. Besides staples like frozen berries, fruit, yog., or savory add ins, I also enjoy challenging how much water I can add without overdoing it. I like to play a game every morning called "how much can I increase the volume of my oatmeal...." It is exactly as crazy as it sounds.
I'd love to hear others ideas as well! I also have a semi-stupid question.... sorry. As much as I love the old dear Quaker bag, I'm a student, and paying 3-5 dollars seems a bit silly when I could walk down to the market and buy oats in bulk. My concern is that somehow they are calorically different. Is there any way to ensure that they aren't that far off? I'm so used to the 120cal per 30 grams dry serving that I'd hate to have to recalculate.. it would throw off my morning game!
I love my oatmeal for breakfast! Sometimes I don't add anything, but when I do...
-Chopped almonds or walnuts and a drizzle of agave syrup
-a few egg whites mixed in
-berries!
-light butter spread and brown sugar
mmm
I love love love oatmeal! I eat it either for breakfast or straight after work when i get in and am really hungry. It completely fills me up and doesn't leave me overfull or craving other foods.
If I have been to the gym or am super hungry I add protein powder, some kind of nuts/nut butter/raisens, cinnamon or nutmeg, banana, prunes, soymilk!
mmm, but if I need to keep the calories abit lower I am quite happy just eating it with raisens and cinnamon, or with prunes and a few almonds.
I like brown sugar and straight up cocoa powder... gives me my chocolate fix! Also peanut butter and cocoa powder... with a little sugar. Oh & Nutella! And the plain brown sugar and cinnamon, sometimes with nuts in it too.
