How Often Should One Weigh Themselves?

Quote  |  Reply

Just a question I have.....I'd like to not get obsessive about this; just wondering what is considered OK ?

Thanks,

Once a week.
I think it depends on the person. I weigh myself everyday but I have only one official weigh in day. I am not obsessive tho. If you feel that you may become obsessive about it then just go with a once a week weigh in.

I do what  ^ she ^ does.  I did find myself thinking about maybe starting to obsess over it (*wink* yeah, I'm not obsessed, not at all) so now every day except Friday is just a game for curiosities sake.

I have a friend that only weighs in about once a month.  Refuses to even own scales -- she goes to her mom's to weigh there and ONLY there on those scales.  It's all in what you're comfy with.  If you think you may have my obsessive gene, pick a day and use ONLY that day for your progress.  It's less stressful that way.

When I was in the losing mode, I weighed once a week. Otherwise now it's every morning. Same time, same place!
I weigh myself every morning. I think it's fine to weigh yourself however often you want, but you just have to remember that your weight fluxuates and you're not going to weigh the same at night as you do in the morning. I step on the scale at night sometimes and I weigh 3 or 4 pounds more than I did that morning. You just can't let it bother you. No matter what though, you should weigh yourself at the same time of day if you want to see if you've lost weight.
Once a week.  If you can't handle fluctuations, that might even be too often...

Thanks to all who answered here! I have heard so many variations;  I wanted to see what you all said.  I saw somewhere where a lady was weighing herself several times a day and I think that is WAY to excessive because of the way our weight can fluctuate. I have been told the best is once a week though, but I guess it is all up to you in the end.

Guess I will just pick a day and stick with itWink

Thanks again!

I weigh almost every day at the same time.  I do this to keep track of my weight and keep it in a 5 pound range.  I don't worry until I gain 4+ pounds- it's usually  due to normal weight fluctuations.  When I gain weight,  I just cut back a little until I'm back in the "safe" range.  Some people  can't do this, but it helps me maintain my weight.
I Weigh myself Every Morning When I wake up and Every night.

At one point though I was obsessive about it. I would Weigh-In Every Single time I saw the scale. Like Bre Said Your weight does Fluctuate A lot. At least mine does and its hard to see it do that so I just do the Morning and Afternoon thing. :)

It depends.  If you are not freaked out by occasional hiccups where you gain a couple, or plateaus, then every day is fine.  I do it every day, and I enjoy it, and don't really care if I don't lose or even if I gain, it's part of my motivation.

But if you freak about every lb you gain, then once a week may be better - and make sure to do it in the morning, AFTER the toilet, BEFORE you eat anything, wearing about the same amount of clothes each time.  Make sure you don't do it the day after a big alcohol binge or a huge dinner.

Good Point udokier!

Definately Weigh yourself after you go to the bathroom in the morning. I weighed myself before once and was so upset then I went to PEE ( in lack of a better word) went and Wighed myself again and was 3 lbs lighter!

WOW.  Talk about bladder capacity!  And I thought I was a camel.  LOL.

I think once a week is good.  I weigh myself every Friday morning (after I pee, before I eat or drink, and I do it 1 hour after I wake up...I noticed if I do it as soon as I wake up, I weigh more than I do an hour later....with little or no clothes on).  I do it on Friday just in case I over indulge a little on the weekends, that way I have all week long to get my act together.  I get tempted to do it more than once a week but I don't like seeing fluctuations; I get discouraged too easily.

deedus- me too! i weigh more when i first wake up (after going to the toilet).. if i wait 20-30min i'm always a few kg lighter?? that is one thing that i do not understand.
I used to weigh myself EVERY morning, which was great when i was losing 5lbs a week!  I liked to see that consistant decrease, and then i stopped losing 5lbs a week and it was driving me nuts to not see the decrease.  So i switched to every monday, first thing in the morning.  I feel much less obsessive than i did before!  and its much more fun to see 2-3lbs off than .5-1lb at a crack!!!

One doctor once told me, its not the week to week but the month to month. If you can stay motivated within the month, I recommend that monthly weigh in, but if you like more instant gratification I say weekly.

I don't like weighing in more than 1 x per week, it gives me bad vibes, like I will jinx my weight loss. maybe I am a little superstitious... I always wear the same outfit, and weigh in at the same time, on the same day of the week... Maybe its slight OCD.

I weigh myself about 3 times a day :P  and have done so for probably the past year and a half.  Theres usually at least 3 times a week where I cuss out my scale though.
It really depends on what you're comfortable with. Some people prefer to have a weigh-in day once a week/two weeks/etc., while others think that it's a better idea to weigh yourself on a daily basis. The daily weigh-in allows you to catch when you begin to gain something back before it's an additional 5 pounds to work off again.

I weigh myself once a month, personally. I feel that I have the self-control to not have to worry about catching any slip-ups (especially since I watch every single calorie that I eat like a hawk). I also measure my body (arms, thighs, bust, waist, hips) and mark that down along with my monthly weight and the day I took the measurements. I'm a tracker. That's the best way to keep myself on schedule.

I know someone who finds it better to weigh herself in every day, though, and she only measures her waistline. That works for her. You should find what works for you.
being a college student, I only weigh myself when I go home. So about 1-2 times a month. I like going home and seeing I lost 5lbs. Except lately the loss has been less. About 3-4lbs. Still makes me happy though.

I became obsessed with my weight during Highschool, weighing myself more than once a day, and it depressed me. I figure once a week would be good. However, as I don't have a scale at school, I do it when I can.
Loulouking: I don't know why we weigh less an hour after we wake up.  Hmmmm, interesting.  And I thought I was just a freak.  Now I know that since it happens to you too, I must be normal.  :-)
