How often on the scale?

Quote  |  Reply
When I first started April 1st I swore I would only weigh myself once a week. My Fiancé however does it all the time which then got me doing it all the time.
I would do it every morning sometimes with a lost sometimes with a slight gain. When there was a gain it would be very discouraging. So now I am trying very hard to only weigh myself every few days (with Sundays weigh in being the one that counts and goes on the weight board)
So how often do people here weigh themselves?

Everytime I walk past the scales I can't help but weigh myself. So, maybe 4,5 times a day. That may seem obsessive but I like to see the fluctuations. I accept my morning weight as being the most accurate and don't stress about weighing 5lbs or so more at night.  If I stop weighing I become too apathetic regarding what I eat.
I will only weigh myself once in the morning, every morning.  That way i see the little changes and know what i need to do different.  Anything else than that i would drive myself insane.  I have seen little changes over time but that is the point.  You are not going to just drop it every day, so you have to remind yourself that.
i had this problem. I would weigh myself everyday, 4-5 times a day. Then i decided i was going to stop doing that, i was becoming obssevie, so i decided to hide the scale. I now bring out the scale very sunday morning to weigh my self for the week. I was starting to annoy my husband with weighing myself so many times a day and i was annoying myself. Because i would expect myself to lose weight like the next day, i know thats not going to happen but i still get upset if i dont see a change. So, i hid the scale. It worked for me!!!

I don't think there is a real good answere to how often we weigh. I began by weighing myself every day, but as my weight loss began to slow, that became less motivating, now I weigh myself twice a week, in the morning.  I think it is more a function of our individual psychology. I would experiment and find out what best motivates you. I hate to say it, but I think if you are weighing yourself four or five times a day, you might have a little too much time on your hands.
I started out doing it only once a week so I wouldn't get too obsessive about it... but this last week I was pretty bad and weighed myself near daily.   Now, I'm back to just once a week.   It's no fun watching the scale through out the week and I find it only serves as discouragement... expecially as most scales aren't 100% perfectly accurate.
I weigh myself atleast 10 times a day, pretty much any time i go into the bathroom. But i always do a naked weight morning and night!!!!!! Its got to be accurate!
I just do it in the morning, when I weigh the least.  And only once a day.  You really don't need to do it anymore than that.  Keeping track of it daily makes it easier to get back on track if you gain some weight.
I weigh myself once a day. I get out of bed, go to the bathroom and step on the scale in my onderwear. I write down my weight on a sheet that I have hanging next to the scale.
Sometimes I add a little comment to explain the extra weight loss or gain.

I don't worry when I don't lose for a day or two but want to lose about a pound per week. This is easily to see on paper and the Excel graphs that  I create at the end of each month which also shows my BMI improvement.

Reason that I weigh myself once a day is to compare the weight loss or gain by different week days. Mondays have always the lowest weight loss or highest weight gains due to an extra delicious dinner of Sundays :-) I now know this trend so I can accept this or do something about it.

A different lifestyle changes my body, not a diet.  I don't count calories on paper but estimate my calorie intake while eating healthy. I lost 20 pounds since the beginning of this year with ease and have 20 pounds more to go.
I weigh myself every morning and now that it's getting hot out I weigh before and after working out to insure that I drink back the lost fluids.  However, I only log my weight once a week.  I log it on Wednesdays because I tend to eat or drink a little more on weekends and I am more disciplined during the week so I am usually heaviest on Monday and lightest of Friday making Wednesday a good day for an average.

I was completely out of control with the scale and it was becoming an addiction; seriously quite a few times a day. I would weigh myself after going to the bathroom, etc. Of course my weight would fluctuate constantly, driving me absolutely nuts.

I met with my nutritionist (and a good one will ask you all these questions) and she told me this was completely self-defeating. Your weight WILL fluctuate with fluid intake, wastes in the body, and if you just had a full meal. The best thing to do is to limit yourself to once a week (pick whatever day/time you want and stick with that) and always use the same scale to avoid discrepancies. If you pick a specific day and time once a week to stick to, this will help to avoid that little voice that looks over at the scale on the bathroom floor and says "well, we'll just take a quick look."

I recommend (if you work out at a gym) getting rid of your bathroom scale to avoid this very thing. Just use the scale at the gym on a specific day and leave it at that. You will find yourself much less obsessed and able to focus just on health and happiness-and that's really the point, isn't it?
I weigh every day. Last year I lost 23 pounds and was a nice and healthy 137 for my 5'7". I stopped wieghing every day then every week and wouldn't you know it I have gained back EVERY pound. I also stopped recording my caloric intake. I have lost 4 pounds so far again and am commited to keeping it off. For me that means getting on the scale every day!
I weigh myself every night before I go to bed and again in the morning before I eat.   I have been trying to get out of this habit because I have been told that it is better not to weigh yourself more than once a week.

I don't get discouraged when I gain, because when I am eating the way I should, the occasional gain of a pound or two is usually just water.  I do love seeing the weight drop and it helps keeps me motivated.

So, although weighing myself less is one of my goals, I don't see it happening any time soon.  I am just too addicted to getting on the scale right now.
i heard that if you must weigh yourself at the same time of day each time because the sun's position in the sky can alter your weight. Kind of like the tides. (morning is supposedly best, because the sun has little effect on your gravity when it is low in the sky and you haven't eaten/ drank anything yet)

I weigh in once a week. I just force myself to avoid the scale the rest of the time, otherwise I know I'll become obsessive...
It also makes me look forward to my weigh day, so I'm super good the day before ^_^

Take it from experienced people such as myself : only weigh weekly.

Weighing daily or several times a day will never show fat gain but water & other useless items.   Also, only weigh before eating for the day, otherwise it could show a weight gain of 10 or so.

It's also bad news to weigh-in moreinfrequently than weekly, because the longer you wait the more pounds you could gain (& these will be fat pounds).   If you waited 2+ weeks, you could gain as much as 15-45 pounds, 30 would put you in the obese department.   Having gained this much weight will make it harder to get off than if it had been only a week worth of weight.   If you end up with this much gain, you risk much more than heart diseaserisk down the road, but can get bad health effects much much sooner such as : bad body aches and pains, strain on knee joints that cause the knees to pop out of the sockets with sever pain, breathing impairment that can result in needing an oxygen tube to be worn just to assist with breathing, painful persistent rashes in the folds of body fat (if you get to the point of folds), a sleep disorder called "sleep apnea" (which comes with 100+ lbs weight gain) which is when you're breathing repeatedly stops while sleeping, severe RLS (restless leg syndrome) which many times comes with sleep apnea, sweating when others aren't hot, impaired walking ability (resulting in limping and walking very slowly to compensate), etc.

As you can see, it's a good idea to keep weight in check since it can result in much more than risk of heart disease, etc., way down the road.   I've just mentioned this for anyone who comes here not knowing what obesity can really do to a person.
i keep my scale in front of my fridge and i weigh myself any time i go into the kitchen.  i'm more than willing to admit this is probably not a good idea, but i can't stop.  i should also note that my scale literally has not budged in weeks.  back in my crazier days, i would eat while standing on the scale to make sure it didn't get any higher.

what a disaster.
Weighing yourself more than once a day is obsessive and unhealthy. First thing in the morning upon awakening is more than enough. It is easier said than done though when you want to see results
I weigh every mornning - I stop in at the gym and jump on the scales.  If I'm by scales though I would way every hour - I have had to wean off to once a day.  I'm now attempting to wean to once a week.

I would have thought being over weight I would have avoided scales but no I have a fascination with them and can't leave them alone!
I weigh myself every day, in the morning, after going to the bathroom, before eating, then I enter it here whether it's up or down. I used to only enter my weight if I lost compared to the last time I entered a weight, but entering it whether up or down is better because it makes me accountable. Plus I've learned not to get too excited if my weight's up a pound or two, it doesn't bother me as long as the trend line doesn't start going up.
Oh, I'm bad.  I weigh myself a lot!  Usually only in the morning though.  I do try and not weigh myself the next day after a "cheat night" out or something anymore.  There's no point in making myself see that as long as I've gone right back to what I'm supposed to do.

After the first couple of weeks on this diet, I decided I was going to do what everyone is always telling me to do and not weigh myself for a while.  So... I went like a month!  I figured this is gonna be GREAT.  I was expecting something profound.  The sort of scale experience that just makes a person feel all better.  I had lost something like a half a pound!  I was devastated.  I won't do that again.  I'd rather be "in touch" with the craziness of my body's little ups and downs than be so upset later, feeling like I'd basically wasted so much time.  If you weigh very often though you just have to be used to the wacky ups and downs and not go off the deep end over it. I guess that's another plus to being a frequent weigher.  I know by now almost any crazy thing could show up on that scale at certain times no matter how good I'm being.
