How often should I weigh in?

Quote  |  Reply

I am on my second week of trying to eat healthy.  I had a bad weekend because I went home to visit family and that never goes well so I didnt have any change from last week to this week (which I guess is good considering the circumstances).

How often should I be updating my weight log to track where I am in relation to my goal?  It seems a bit much to do this everyday, but what are your thoughts on watching weight loss progression?

My feeling is that if you can stand on the scales every day and not be too concerned if they go up or down then daily weighing is fine.  But if it's going to depress you if they go up (because they do from time to time through no fault of your own) then weigh once or week or maybe twice a week max.   If you want to track your real progress, recording your weight once a week gives any natural fluctuations time to iron out and you see the true trend.

I do it once a week. I used to do it every day, but that got really annoying.

I weigh myself at least once per day, sometimes more, but like gi-jane said, it really depends on whether you stress over the scale or not.  If the numbers bother you, then once a week is plenty.  I never stress over the scale, so weighing multiple times per day (since my scale is conveniently placed in my bathroom and I work at home) works for me.

One caveat.  If you are going to use the weight log and want the trend line (the green one on the graph) to mean anything useful, then daily or at least every other day is best.  If you only log once in a while, like I do, then the trend line is meaningless.  If you record your weight daily, the the blue line might be rather spiky due to normal fluctuations in your weight from day to day, but the green line will be smoother (it does averaging) and as long as that one shows a downward trend, then you are good, regardless of what the blue one looks like.  For me, the blue line is the only one with any meaning because of the randomness of when I log my weight (basically when I have lost 2 or more pounds or when I feel like it.)

Thanks everyone.  That is what I was looking for.  I wouldnt say I stress about the numbers but they are in the back of my head.  Maybe I will take a median approach and go with every other or every few days.

I like to keep a spreadsheet with a running average with a seven to fourteen day window, and I call the average my "true weight." This way it smooths out those daily varations in weight and I can weigh-in as much as my obsessive-compulsive self wants.

I weigh myself almost everyday but I only track it twice a week.  I weigh in on Monday and Thursday.  My reason is on Thursday I hope I have lost 1-2 lbs and on Monday I hope I have maintained over the weekend.  It works for me so far!
