How often do YOU weigh yourself???

Quote  |  Reply

I have only changed my eating habits for one month now, in the beginning I only weighed once a week, but now I feel obsessed and weigh every morning, i know theres no point weighing every day because it fluctuates loads over a week, but i just worry that ive put weight on,

how often do you all weigh yourself and why?

I'll argue that it's fine to weight yourself daily. I do. It lets me know I'm headed in the right direction.

But I'm kind of hard on myself. If I'm up a pound or half a pound (I know, water weight, what's in your system blah blah blah), then it's a super low calorie day.

I don't own a scale and I use the Wii Fit for a body test once a week.  I do this either on Saturday or Sunday mornings.

What's the Wii Fit body test?  I know Wii Fit is an exercise game, but what's the body test?  Unfortunately, I'm addicted to the scale and weigh myself at least twice a day, once in the morning and once before bed.  I can't seem to stop myself.

I weigh every morning, and here's a good explanation of why.

If it makes you crazy (or you can't keep yourself from overrestricting because of a small jump in the scale), then it isn't for you.

But if you can see the scale jump 2 or 3 pounds (up OR down) and not freak out (in sadness or in happiness), then I'd say you are ok.

I weigh everyday in the am nude after tinkling. I realize there will be fluctuations.  If I go down then yay! i did something right! If I go up I try to figre what was different to cause that. Did I lift yesterday? have too much sodium? over eat, or not eat cleanly etc? Then from there I adjust for the day, if I over ate, I'll work to stay at my goal, sodium = reduce it and drink more water, lifting = drink more water blah blah blah. It works for me but I don't know if it would work for everyone.

I've had lifelong issues with my weight and after 5 + years of weighing in weekly with WW and seeing a LOT of ups and downs, the scale became my enemy.  When I lost I'd "celebrate" with a free meal or weekend or .... well you get it right?  If I'd gained, I would  really sink into a depression and soothe myself with, what else?  Food!

I think the scael is a pwerful tool IF you have the right personality .... for those of us who are emotional eaters and do not discriminate against which emotion pushes us to eat, it can be REALLY dangerous.

I judge my progresso n how I look naked in front of hte bathroom mirror, how I  look in my work out clothes when I'm training, and how my clothes are fitting.

i weigh myself everymorning, i use to weigh myself 2-3 times a day, so in my opinion this has been much better for myself

amethystgirl - thanks for the link! That's the best explanation I've seen for weighing every day. That's why I also think the trend line helps - as long as it keeps getting lower I know I'm heading in the right direction.

Definitely - I only go by the trend line.

I weigh every two weeks. I find it's a better way to know if what you're doing is actually working without freaking out every day and not sticking to a program for more than three days without feeling the need to make adjustments.

I weigh like more than once a day. I try not to but the scale is just there calling me..

Eh, I've lost a lot of weight so I think it's worked out alright.

I think you should weigh yourself as often as you want. If it's motivation to do better, then go for it.

this is exactly what I do. I weight myself every morning and then not think about it for the rest of the day (if you can do that, then everyday is fine) However, I only record Monday morning weigh ins which really helps be because I don't want to overindulge on the weekend so it keeps me on track.

I weigh myself every time I go to the gym which is about 5 days a week, and enter it into the CC weight log.  That way I can look at the overall trend line, which is steadily moving down, even though my actual weight is bouncing up and down.

I'm definitely a once-a-week weigher as I find that it's much better for me psychologically.  When I used to weigh daily, I found myself restricting if I had gone up a pound (which I did even though I knew it could be water, TOM etc...)  That said, I think it is a personal choice: If you are likely to beat yourself up or even feel a little low if you do go up in weight then I would say do it once a week.  If you are able to rationalise the fluctuations in weight and just keep your eye on the overall trend, then I can't see anything wrong with weighing more often....but that's just not for me Smile

If I may, 2c from a former compulsive weigher and a girl with an ED.

I think you are fine to weigh yourself daily, max, provided you know and fully recognise in your mind, that your weight is going to fluctuate from day to day. That it is not a true representation of your progress but rather that the trend of those - as has been highlighted - that is. And if you are able to weigh up to once daily, and laugh at that number and move on, then I applaud you.

But if you are someone weighing more than once daily, or even if you weigh yourself less than that but are basing your happiness on the number on your scales, you need to start focusing on YOU instead. On how you look. On how you feel. On clothing fit and similar and NOT on the scales. Even when I was only seeing my weight once a week I would base my WHOLE week on that one bloody number.

If you can manage once weekly or fortnightly, great. But if you find you're making your own happiness based on your scales, smash them. Destroy them. Make a piece of art out of them - be inventive, but don't get on them.

Posts like ithilien's are indicative of an unhealthy scale-person relationship. And I am sorry to name names but gi-jane is absolutely correct that those kinds of posts are the sort that should show you how counterproductive daily weighing can be if you cannot remove your emotions from the number on the LCD.

As well as the trend article, I suggest anyone who struggles with that daily fluctuation if they monitor it read this: Why The Scale Lies - by Renee Cloe, ACE Certified Personal Trainer

In the Middle Ages, they had guillotines, stretch racks, whips and chains. Nowadays, we have a much more effective torture device called the bathroom scale.” - Stephen Phillips.

I weigh every day, throw the number into my spreadsheet and move on.  If I weighed weekly, I would worry whenever the number went up but, by weighing daily, I can relax because I regularly see fluctuations.  Also, I consider my "true" weight to be whatever the lowest weight is that I've seen within the last seven days.  That also helps me to not care about the fluctuations so much and lets me ignore the TTOM water gains.

I Weigh myself every morning before I eat or drink. I also try and squeeze out a poo. It all helps (embarrassed).  I have lost 14lb in 4 weeks. If my weight has not changed down then I don't log it. I will log my weight the next day.  I think that I will move to once a week and see if I surprise myself.

I have a question about the graph that shows you the trend in weight loss. My Blue line is a perfect match to the green line. Is everyone the same?
