How often do you weigh yourself

Quote  |  Reply
Hello!  I am trying to lose 25 lbs and I was wondering how often I should be weighing myself to make sure I am making progress.  I started the diet 10 days ago and have not weighed myself yet.  I don't want to become obsessed with weighing myself but I want to know if what I am doing is working.

when i'm trying to lose, i weigh daily.  i don't put much stock in any one number, though; i look for trends and averages.  on tuesday, for instance, i was up more than two pounds, but i knew it was because i'd had waaaay too much sodium on monday.  i'd rather have seven numbers and get a weekly average than weigh weekly and potentially get one misleading number.

just remember, it's never absolute.
I weigh myself daily, but only count my Wednesday number (that is unless it is way off from Tuesday/Thursday, then I avg. Tues/Wed/Thurs.)
Oh wow.  Thanks guys.  I guess I should go to a friends and weigh myself then.  I don't even own a scale!!!  That is a good idea to average it out like that.
I am an obsessive person and therefore weigh myself once a week and always on the same scale - at the gym! That way I'm not tempted to weigh myself every day. You're going to see ups and downs and that would make me insane so I just don't fall into that trap.
once every 2-3 days.

I would recommend using the same scale in the same location each time. Scales can sometimes be off by a pound or two and using the same scale will keep the losses/gains more consistent.

yeah.  and if you can, buy yourself a good scale.  there's nothing more frustrating than those crappy old dial scales that never go back to zero.  to reset?  if i reset, does that invalidate everything that came before?  bah!
I weigh myself everyday, i love making little charts and such to see how it is moving, more or less in the same way as pgeorgian, I like to see the trends, to say what affects my weight and what does really work well.
ooh - soliwit - i make charts, too!  i made one just the other day, charting monthly highs and lows for the last two years!

I didn't weigh myself every day because I didn't have a scale before, and now that I do have one I plan on weighing every two weeks or so like I was doing at my doctor's office. Your weight naturally fluctuates day to day and that would drive me crazy, so I didn't get a scale and only weighed myself every few weeks. I've been seeing a steady decrease that way so I don't drive myself crazy over every single pound and get especially excited when I lose more than I thought I did. Plus I find that the longer I don't know what my weight is, the better I take care of myself to make sure I'm not gaining any weight.
I weigh myself everyday, but only count the Friday weight.  I need to stop the daily weigh ins though, because with high sodium the day before, the two pound increase in one day can really be depressing!
i actually find it helpful to note the daily fluctuations.  i like knowing what sodium does to my body; that i'll be a couple of pounds heavier just before my period, but a pound lighter after; that if i drink beer on friday, i'll see the effects on monday; that i can't eat a block of cheese in three days without consequences, etc.  i like analyzing and figuring out what's going on with my body.

but i understand that that doesn't work for everyone.

i use to weigh myself like 3 times a day. i got obsessed with it.

i try to only do it like once a weak now.

I weigh myself everyday, mostly to maintain focus on my goals (I find when I go a day or two without weighing, those are the days I'll slip on watching what I am eating).  As everyone else has said - weighing yourself daily you'll see ups and downs so depends on whether you will find that motiviating or de-motivating.  I find it motivating as it helps me understand how what I am eating (high sodium days!) affects my body.  I look at my average loss over the week and have weekly goals though so I dont' drive myself crazy.

I was always told you should only weigh yourself once a week, but I think everyone needs to find what works for them and stick with it.

 Hope this helps!

Wendy

I weigh my self daily for two reasons.  The first is basically to see which way my tresn is going.  I try not to get too upset when the scale creeps upward because I know the calories I am eating so I know the weight is nothing but water and bulf food weight and not fat.  Secondly, I weigh myself so I can enter my weight in the fitness machines when I work out.  Remember, your weight makes a difference (albeit a small one) when you work out.  The more weight you have on you, the more your body has to work.  This is why you see people power walking and carrying light weights.
I believe in daily weigh-ins, so if its up, you catch it right away.

I log my weight on the chart here, and its funny, I can point to any high spikes and tell you what the event was that caused it.  (weekend company, a birthday, etc).

I've also learned from the chart, that when my weight gets to the lowest ever, then I immediately indulge and it goes right back up.  A little flaw in my habits I need to work on.
I weight myself every morning before I eat. I use the same scale everyday. I weight myself to keep track on my maintaining.

I think it's a matter of your own psychology.

I weigh myself twice a week. Personally, I find that the fluctuations of daily weighing are discouraging more often than not. I would go to just once a week, but I find I really want to peek, and the Wednesday check helps some, although it can be discouraging too.

Other people enjoy watching those fluctuations and figuring out what makes them go up and down.

once a week...first thing in the morning every Saturday
I weigh myself daily every single morning before I eat anything. I don't pay too much attention if the scale goes up a pound or two because I know it's just water weight or whatever. However, if I went up too much, then that's a red flag that tells me I need to work out more. The two weigh ins I do take mind to is the one I do on Monday and the one I do on Friday. Monday because it's the start of a new week and I like to know what my starting weight is for that week. On Friday because that's like my end-of-the-week evaluation number for knowing how much I lost.
