Oh the Sodium!

Quote  |  Reply
I just cannot get a proper amount of sodium, everything is just so chocked full of it! I don't have the time or desire to cook things from scratch, and I like canned soups, etc. I was shocked to read the package for lipton chicken noodle soup from the box. Over a 1000 mg  of sodium for a quarter package!

There are some products out there with reduced sodium.  I've been on a low salt diet for years and I've got quite a list.

low sodium snacks - rice cakes, low sodium wheat thins and triscuits

soups - Whole Foods Market 365 brand has a variety of low sodium soups and chili.  I don't like the low sodium Campbells soups.  In the frozen food section, look for Tabatchnik brand.  They have low sodium vegetable soup that is very good.

beans - Eden brand, but it's expensive.  Whole Foods Market 365 brand is only .89 a can.

tuna - Bumblebee makes a low sodium chunk light, and Whole Foods Market has the 365 brand of Tongol tuna (a very light, dolphin safe tuna)

Canned vegetables - you should be able to find no salt added corn, beets, beans etc., but not a great variety.  Also, tomatoes.  You just have to spend the time and search them out.

Plain frozen vegetables are low in sodium.  Fresh fruits are low in sodium and require no preparation at all.

V-8 has a low sodium variety and I've seen low sodium tomato soup too.

Watch out for baked goods!  The baking powder and baking soda in them counts as salt!

I don't know how I'd keep my sodium low enough without cooking from scratch.  I wish you luck.
Thanks a lot for the advice, Whole Foods Market brand isn't in the part of Canada I live in, so I'll give Cambell's a try, I really like their regular soups.
Amy's brand also makes a low sodium soup
I am also very frustrated by all the sodium in everything.
guys, stop freaking out about sodium and eat less packaged foods!!

all the foods mentioned on this post are brand names. anything with a brand name is packaged or canned, therefore probably has a decent amount of salt added (especially canned.) if you eat more natural vegetables, meats, etc. with no brand names attached,   i can guarantee your sodium will go down.

i know having time to cook can be hard, but it is very possible to whip up a yummy stirfry in about 10 minutes. give it a shot! :)
I agree with custard. Many vegetable soups can be as quick as 10 minutes worth of chopping, then simply chuck 'em in some water or low sodium broth and heat it.

Or, if you really want to make things speedy, buy frozen, already chopped veggies, and pour in water or low sodium broth, depending on the recipe, and heat.
