Oil substitutions

Quote  |  Reply

I have a great recipe for a veggie dip but it calls for 4 tablespoons of oil (olive canola whatever).  What could I use as a lower fat/cal substitution that would give an ok consistancy?  When baking I usually substitute applesauce but I think that would affect the flavor here.  Would plain yogurt work?  THanks

Can you post the recipe?

I think plain yogurt would do fine.  Just blend it in until it's the right consistency of a dip.

1/2 cup sugar (i use splenda though)

4 tablespoons oil

4 tablespoons mustard

1 tablespoon garlic powder

1 cup mayo (i use mayo with olive oil)

thank

id just eliminate the oil completely.. seems kinda unnecessary

You could use light mayonnaise and cut some extra calories that way.  I too would just leave the oil out.  I can't quite figure out how that dip would taste with all that sweetner in it.  I guess I've never had a sweet dip for vegetables.

Yeah...I'm not sure why it calls for additional oil (as mayo is quite oily to begin with). Just leave the oil out. If it was me, I would probably use plain lowfat or Greek yogurt instead of mayo too, but mayonnaise just grosses me out for no good reason.

Clairelaine - I typically add a tiny bit of sugar/honey/fruit to my homemade dressings. I find that a little sweetness helps bring out the savory flavors. However, 1/2 cup of sweetener does seem very high.

Try a low-fat or non-fat Italian salad dressing.  Walmart sells one that is 10 calories per 2 Tablespoons (nope, not a typo!)  I've even used it so saute veggies in. It's less than 2.00 a bottle.

I totally agree!  A tiny bit, yes, but half a cup?  I like to add a half teaspoon of honey and a teaspoon of dijon mustard to my vinaigrette to give it some zip. (makes about 4 oz of dressing to dress a salad for four)

Yeah, I would say scrap the oil altogether... so many recipes call for oil when they REALLY DON'T need it!  Also, I would suggest fat-free miracle whip!!
