33 year old celiac looking for buddies
This is my third try. I really only need to loose 12 pounds, but every time I get into gluten, I put on 5 and only three of it goes away on it's own. I think my body is bad at math! I get neuropathy in my hands really bad, so I usually have to give up pilates and cross country skiing for the week (we still had snow until yesterday).
I love this web site- it helped me discover why I was feeling so bad before I was dx with celiac (just a week ago, offically). Writting down what you eat does make a big difference.
I have been gluten free for about 10 weeks, and am starting to get the hang of it. There are wonderful people trying to loose weight over at silly yaks, but most of them are doing weight watchers, but I am trying to watch my carbs, too, and I haven't gotten the hang of all that math........
Hope to hear for Sillys and non-sillys alike!!!!
there are more sillys on here every day! I'm one, but I'm 16 :) STAY AWAY FROM THAT GLUTEN!!! I reccomend checking out glutenfreeforum.com, it's got all kinds of good info
manic, celiac is an autoimmune disorder where if you eat any gluten (a protein found in wheat, rye, barley, and oats) your body attacks the villi of your intestines, which are hairlike projections that absorb nutrients. Even a tiny bit of gluten (ie using the the pan in which someone just cooked normal pasta) can make us really sick.
Sorry that you are having to go through that, it must be difficult to find foods that you can eat. Best of luck to you!
Anway, I'm not sure what silly yak is either lol....but I'm silly I guess haha. Welcome to C-C.

I am 99% that I have Celiac's although I am waiting for the bloodwork to confirm.
manicdieter, I took a guess (again, since I am new to being celiac, or possibly), but SillyYaks is a website/forum for Celiac sufferers :)
If I AM confirmed, I will be back to ask for a lot of advice and suggestions :)
Nice to meet you all!

welcome to the club, mc!
here are some great resources for the newly daignosed:

Unsafe list: http://www.celiac.com/articles/182/1/Unsafe-G luten-Free-Food-List-Unsafe-Ingredients/Page1 .html
And keep in mind that the blood tests have a high rate of false negatives, so if you get a negative, don't give it up. If you don't want to do an endoscopy, try testing through enterolab.com, which is an at home test with a much higher rate of accuracy. Unfortunately it's $150 out of pocket. Of course, the best test is how you feel after being gluten-free for a month or two!! Regardless of your results on any test(s) I recommend trying the diet.
thank you all for the info.
I will definitely check out those links, hak1031. Thanks so much!
And, I have heard a lot about false negatives, so my plan was to try gluten-free regardless to see if it helps.
I just really am feeling overwhelmed at the task since I LOVE carbs and it will be a test of discipline to learn how to shop for gluten free stuff.
And, it seems to be not as easy since my regular grocer doesn't exactly have a 'gluten-free' section :)
I am up for the challenge.
Thanks!
I am 34 and I, too, was diagnosed Celiac in November. I do really well staying away from Gluten for awhile and then I give into a craving... the pain is unreal. In a way though, that really helps me to remember how bad Gluten is for my body. Stick with it, it's worth it.
My mom and a couple of girlfriends bought me cookbooks and other literature on Gluten-Free Lifestyles. I hate to admit it, but the "Dummies Guide to Living Gluten-Free" and the corresponding cookbook were the easiest, non-preachy books they got for me. We are planning a day of Gluten-Free (experimental) cooking in my kichen later this month... They are sweet to be so supportive.
Good luck. I keep telling myself it will get easier with time and knowledge.
