55 Year Old Diabetic Dieter Missing Pasta and Rice

Quote  |  Reply
I was diagnosed in March with type 2 diabetes. I have lost between 26 and 28 pounds since then. The hardest thing for me to quit eating was the pasta which I love but no longer eat due to the carbs in it. I know there are low carb pasta out there but my local markets do not have any and so far I have not ordered any of them off the internet as I hate paying the extra for them to have them shipped and then not like the pasta. I also love rice and the carbs in it are terrible.  My dietician has limited me to 45 carbs per meal and 15 carbs per snack. I know if I eat cereal for breakfast my glucose level goes up and I am usually hungry mid-morning. I try to be very aware of what I am eating and how it was prepared, I cannot have black pepper or raw onions so I ask when I am in a resturant about the seasoning used on the food. I do not eat out very often. I need some people who are around 55 years old to chat with and put on my friends list.

Hello and welcome barker71!!!

Congratulations on your weight loss! You should be very proud of yourself!

I have had Type 2 diabetes for years, and take insulin and oral medications for it. I try to keep my daily carb intake at about 50% of my overall calories, which means I eat a lot of whole grains and vegetables, along with a nice variety of lean proteins.

I've found that bulgur and quinoa (both grains), have fewer carbs than brown rice, so I made the switch over to them a few months ago. They are great tasting and have fewer calories per one cup serving, too! You might look into them. If you cannot find them locally, you can always order them online via Amazon.

For pasta, if you don't like some of the whole grain varieties out there (they even make quinoa pasta), you might look into shirataki noodles or tofu-shirataki noodles.  Locally, I can only find plain shirataki noodles at asian grocery stores. Shirataki noodles are made from an asian yam paste and they are ALL fiber ... no calories and no carbs. (OK, they are a bit rubbery, but they go great in noodle soups and if you splash enough pasta sauce on them or toss them in a stir fry, they are fine!)  Tofu-shirataki noodles have added tofu ... so they have 20 calories and 3 carbs per serving and a much more user-friendly appearance and texture. (I like the ones shaped like fettucini noodles!)  I love the fact that I can have a HUGE mound of tofu-shirataki noodles for 80 calories/6 carbs .... yum yum yum. And because they are fiber, they are over-the-top filling!

When it comes to breakfast cereals, I have found that really high fiber ones like Kashi Go Lean (10g fiber per serving), really doesn't spike my blood sugar. And all that fiber helps keep you full. Of course, the milk on cereal is also a factor, so I stopped putting skim milk on my cereal and switched to 1/2 cup of unsweetened vanilla Almond Breeze which has 1/2 the calories of skim milk and only 1 carb.  May I suggest a breakfast of 1 cup of Kashi Go Lean, 1/2 cup of unsweetened vanilla Almond Breeze, and 75-100 calories' worth of your favorite lean protein? That will keep you nicely filled up, and is less than 300 calories.

Anyway, sorry for rambling on so much ... welcome!

Hi I am a 33 yr old Marine drill instructor, and diabetes is rampant on both sides of my family, although I am not close with either side relationally (I was adopted at a young age).

I had some questions regarding diabetic symptoms.  Did you notice symptoms in your feet at my age?  Mine have begun to grow tender near the end of certain days, especially if my alcohol intake is high (say, after a football game on the weekend or something) or if I have a tremendously sweet dessert (icecream with Pepsi).  Should I be as concerned as I am?  Am I overreacting?  Any guidance from your own personal experience would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried Barilla Plus (wheat pasta), Uncle Bens whole grain rice, also Gousgous is not bad ..........and as you get always told,  these are used in modaration and small portions.....this are avail. at local grochery stores ...like Abertson, some Safeways .....

I am a diet-controlle Type2, born to parents which were both long-time med user .....so docs thought I would end up as Type1but was lucky ......so I always lived somewhat with the disease......but I've decided that I will try to hold out on meds as long as I can

Hope this helps a bit .....
