54 Years Old, Needing to lose more then my age
Hi Folks,
I am looking for some of the post menopausal ladies that need to lose 60 pounds plus. I am only 5 foot 2 and need to lose about 60 pounds. I find I have no energy and my knees are starting to ache. Add on that I can't sleep straight through the night and you wonder why I have waited (weighted??) so long. I tried this in the summer and didn't stick with it so hope I can last this time. Anyone that would like to be friends on this journey are gratefully welcome. I won't promise to talk everyday, though I'll try but would like to touch base a few times a week to keep each other motivated and honest.![]()

Thank you all for the encouragement! It really does mean a GREAT deal to have the support of this group! It is scary to walk into unknown territory in our lives! For many of us, myself included, being slim and healthy is not something we have experienced as adults thus far for any significant portion of time.
For me, though it is wonderful, it is really unfamiliar. While it feels good it is also scary. People respond to me differently. People think I am a different person than I was as the FAT Terry. My own sister acts as though I am suddenly a threat to her. I am different in many ways because I am far more in control of my own life, my health and my actions. This journey for me has been a spiritual awakening and that is what is most important to me. I am alive like never before and I don't want to miss a single moment. I have to learn to continue to be me and not ado[t roles to fit the expectations of others or roles my mind would have for me due to conditioned responses to life from the past.
This binge was a conditioned response to stress. Though I have had stresses along the way as I have lost weight this was the first time that I fell into the trap of trying to eat my way past it instead of realizing that the stress would pass on its own whether I ate more or not. Eating more only served to add to the stress. I think I needed to have this lesson so that I can do better next time. The belly ache I had from the chips will stick with me for a good amount of time to remind me of the folly of unconscious emotional eating. I will probably do something like this again but probably not for a while.
Thanks again all for being there to lean on and share with!

OK, so I'm no poet! But you, my friend, are TREMENDOUS! Congratulations!
Terry, you are amazing. I do understand what you're feeling when you say people react to you differently once you lost weight. It's almost insulting, and also flattering at the same time. It's almost like you are a different person because before you were only seen as just someone there but now you are being looked at with a command and a statement of yes, I am here. Being heavy we tend to not want to be noticed so our choices are more subdued. Now there is a take charge attitude and rightfully should be. You worked hard to be where you are, and nobody can take that from you and anyone who is jealous of that, well maybe they were not as confident as you thought they were before anyway, but that's not anything you can do anything about. You have to keep on the road you set for yourself, because you are the only one in control of you!!
Now regarding your binging, don't be to hard on yourself, I truly believe our bodies will tell us when we need something out of our norm. It's a stress protection that our body sets up. I have started stacking up on the rice cakes. They are good for the late night snack especially if I am watching a late night movie, and if you really want to be naughty I spread a little cool whip on top (1 tablespoon). Just watched the movie Elizabeth, what a movie. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Now pizza on the other hand, if I know I'm having pizza I have to watch my calories for the day. One good thing about being where I am, there aren't to many good pizza places around so it makes it a little easier.
Overall, I'd say you sound a lot like the song "I am Woman" by Helen Reddy (not sure if I spelled her name correctly).
Keep up being the strong person you have become.
Karen
Good morning all,
I am 56 years old, 5'8" and currently 219 pounds. The name of this thread captured my attention because I do have to lose more than my age, however, my first goal is to be below 200. My personal goal is 165-170. Even though that may sound high to many, if I got there and stayed there, I would be in 7th heaven.
I currently am off from work with a pinched sciatic nerve and disc problems and will probably be off another 6-8 weeks. I am meeting with a spinal specialist on 4/9 and will go from there regarding recommendations. I am sure my weight doesn't help my condition.
I am looking for support and others to share success and setbacks with. I have read almost all the posts on this thread and can see that many of you will be wonderful on-line friends.
I'm not too internet savvy and I don't quite understand all this site has to offer. I hope I can find my way back thread and learn all I can from your experience.
Thanks,
Kathleen

KCM, Kathleen, Welcome! Our stats are pretty close. Currently I'm 5'7", 215 lbs, 51 yr old. I've lost 39 pounds. My doctor's goal for me is 190, maintain for a year and then lose more if I want. At that weight I should be wearing a Misses 16. And just, like you, I know it's high to some, but I would be thrilled to maintain that weight. Good luck with the spinal specialist. It must be so painful for you. Can you do any activity without too much pain? Please add me as a 'friend' and I'll do the same!
Hi Kathleen, I've lost 21 pounds so far, but still quit a bit to go. You are right, this is a wonderful site with many wonderful people here to both give and get support. I have added you to my friend list, please feel free to add me as well. To add me to your friends list you can click on my user name and when you get to my profile you will see a "add buddy" link on the upper right hand side of the page. Click on that link and that will add me to your list. Losing weight will be the best thing you can do. I know I had a lot of knee pain, walking up the stairs was very painful. I had to walk one step at a time. It was embarrassing when I was at work, everyone else running up the stairs and me inching along. Now it is much better, with the weight off so far, it still gets painful at times but not nearly as bad.
Hi Marie, I can't wait until I can ware of size 16 again. I still have clothes in different sizes, so I'm hoping I can get into them again.
Karen
Hi Karen,
So funny! I'm exactly the same way! I'm going through my misses size 18's now. No more women's 18!
I am donating my larger sized clothes. I've never done that before, I've always kept them for the gaining phases of my life.
Wow, size 16 seems like a dream to me!
Marie
Hey Marie,
I will get rid of the larger sizes too, but I kept my smaller size clothes just so when I lost weight I wouldn't have to buy a whole new wardrobe. I refuse to get rid of my smaller sizes. They stay my incentive. Well, I walked my 2 miles today. My knee felt ok, it's been a little painful lately. I can't wait to get a treadmill. I really like the idea of being able to get on and walk at any time I want, even if it's past midnight.
The last two weeks I've lost 2 lbs per week. I weigh myself everyday but I use Saturdays as my official weigh in day. I dropped another 2 lbs this week, making it a total of 25 pounds now. I am excited but at the same time, I don't want to lose to fast either. Well, I am feeling good and energetic. I have been moving alot more the last two weeks and I did up my calories a bit as well. I must be burning more then I realized. I've been playing the WII at night - having a lot of fun with the Boxing game. I get to knock out my opponents.
and boy when I tell you I get a work out; I get a work out. It's a great game.
Talk with you soon...
Karen
Karen,
That's great! Congratulations on the weight loss and good news about your knee feeling better.
I agree about not losing too fast. I'm so excited with my progress but I don't to go crazy b/c I know it won't stay off. Slow and steady wins the race!
Marie
HI Bev, I'm 5/1 and need to lose about 30 lbs, but I'm older than you. lol I just turned 60 and am still struggling with the emotional eating. Guess it's going to be with me til I'm no longer vertical.
I'm new to this community and hope I can find these posts again. So much great support and information.
I've given up the packaged, home delivered food and will try to just be sensible. Very hard when that chocolate/sugar craving starts in!
Glad to be here and would love to be part of your support. I sure need it too!
Welcome Sweetfree... We've got lots of good support here and we all need it as well. Glad to have you join us. I have added you to my friends list please feel free to add me as well.
Thanks Marie, I have been moving a lot more over the last two weeks - got a real burst of energy, so I think I was probably burning more then I usually do. I do want to be careful and not lose to fast. It's got to stay off this time. No if ands or buts about it. I am throwing away all the big size clothes......
Hope everyone has a great week.
Karen
Hey there, So nice to meet someone my age at last. I'm 53 and I have 35 lbs to lose. I just found this site a week ago and think it's fantastic. I would love to have buddies my age on here. Please add me, also can you tell me how to add others? I don't have a clue. Thanks
Hello Newbies!
I've added you as 'buddies' so join us! To add a buddy just click on their name and their profile will pop up. On the same line as their name, you will see 'add buddy' and just click!
Good luck!
I have been stuck at 190 for a month now and am getting discouraged. Things went a lot faster at first. But I feel so much better now (more energy and sleeping better) that I can't allow myself to backslide. I need all the help I can get to stay focused.
Welcome clharr and canarygirl3.... This is a wonderful site with lots of wonderful people who are very supportive and knowledgeable about different weight lose issues.
Good luck in hitting your goals.. I will look forward to chatting with you.
Karen
Howdy y'all. I just turned 59 and weigh more than 255 (at 5-7), so I feel your pain. I have to admit that obesity and arthritis have troubled me much more than the few hot flashes. I'm taking B12 for the mental fog, liquid & it helps.
I have an arthritic hip (with "referred pain to my knee), and walking is not the best exercise for me--sadly. I loved walking. I am very slowly monitoring my calorie intake and trying to increase my activity, too. I have a stationary bike that has done wonders releiving stiffness and restoring mobility. But obviously, it's not enough. I've been doing this for years, and at least I stopped gaining, but I have not had much success losing.
I too love fast-food (Chick-fil-a has a new milkshake coffee-caramel that is divine at 800 calories). I have switched over to the fast salads, and some of them are great...
I've only been at this a week. Does anyone have an exercise ball? Am I crazy to try to use one at my size?

Hello I am new to this forum or any forum for that matter. I am 61 and I have 100 lbs to lose. My knees hurt as well as my feet and I am full of arthritis. I need some motivation. I play golf two times a week but I am constantly overeating. I think I am good add my foods and my food is over 2000 calories. I am out of control! I am looking for friends who are around my age with lots of weight to lose. I need friends and I will be a faithful friend.
Hello,
I'm Christine (exsurfergirl53), and I'm 55 years old. Just went through the menopause thing. Hot flashes and all that.
I read recently that women over 40 lose the enzymes that metabolize wheat properly, and that's why we gain weight. I don't know it that's 100 percent true, but I think it bears exploring.
I hve more than 100 pounds to lose, and it sure went on easy after I lost my husband of 16 years, but it's not coming off very easy!
I would love to be your friend and weight loss buddy! I'm new to this myself, and we can help each other along. I will do my very best to at least write every other day. I'm a full time college student, and there are just times when I won't be able to write every day. But I will commit to at least every other day.
It's nice to meet you, and I'm in Southern California by the way.
Christine (exsurfergirl53)
Is my sodium intake too low?
