Just wanted to give people a more realistic view of how countries are fairing. It seemed ridiculous that France was in 13th place when they should really be in the top ten.

Olympic Standings on scribd.

Criteria:

Gold is worth 3 points, Silver 2, and Bronze 1.

Rank is determined by Value then Total (medal count).

Position changes from previous edition:

  1. United States took number 1 slot from China.

Top Ten as of 11AM PST on 8/21/2008

  1. United States with 200pts and 102 medals
  2. China with 200pts and 89 medals
  3. Russian Fed. with 109pts and 57 medals
  4. Great Britain with 93pts and 44 medals
  5. Australia with 80pts and 42 medals
  6. Germany with 73pts and 36 medals
  7. Korea with 60pts and 28 medals
  8. France with 57pts and 34 medals
  9. Japan with 49pts and 25 medals
  10. Italy with 47pts and 25 medals

That's very interesting stuff.  I like that system of scoring the "winners" better.  Of course, China's points will drop when all of their 12 year-old gymnasts are stripped of their medals.  Laughing

you must have a lot of time on your hands to keep posting updates :) people can just check the medal count site for updates..

p.s. to go with what kthompson said, I watched diving earlier and they had a 14yr old boy competing, I didn't hear what the circumstances are but I wonder how he's able to be in the Olympics.

I don't believe that diving has a minimum age -- not positive, but don't think so (and can't be bothered googling it at the moment :) )

Most sports don't have a minimum age limit, diving is one of them. Alexandre Despatie won gold at the Commonwealth Games when he was 13.

Did you not read the OP? I did this because, ranking solely by gold count or total medal count produces wonky results. So I made this to sort apply values to the medals and then rank by value then total count.

Oh and no, updates take just under 5 min, because I copy paste the data from that site into a Data(#) worksheet in my excel workbook. Then I hit use the F3 Replace All function to change the (#) to the newest data set.

The longest part is actually making this post here.

  1.  China  with 223 points and 100 medals.
  2.  United States with 220 points and 110 medals.
  3.  Russian Fed. with 139 points and 72 medals.
  4.  Great Britain with 98 points and 47 medals.
  5.  Australia with 89 points and 46 medals.
  6.  Germany with 83 points and 41 medals.
  7.  France with 70 points and 40 medals.
  8.  Korea with 67 points and 31 medals.
  9.  Italy with 54 points and 28 medals.
  10.  Japan with 49 points and 25 medals.

*all wall holding a squirrely 9mo old baby in my lap and feeding her.

HA Israel sucks in the olympics--This is already known all throughout Israel that the players simply aren't good.  Ha I guess that's what makes them awesome =)

Ignore the naysayers, OP, and keep posting the updates.  I enjoy them!

Most sports don't have a minimum age. For gymnastics there is because being smaller gives an unfair advantage.

okie dokie

naysayer? please. Just saying it's easy to look at the link, I didn't tell him NOT to post updates.

You should dock points for government sponsored olympic programs. Anyone could be a powerhouse with 'medal mills' planted all over the country. just sayin'. :)

One last time. If you follow that google link, you'll get different results than if you look at my ranking. My ranking is a weighted ranking that takes into account a differing values for gold, silver and bronze to provide a ranking that actually makes sense, as opposed to Only Golds matter (as per your link) or Only Total Medals matter (as per NBC).

You know I actually considered working in GDP, because, let's be honest, when it comes to making medalists money matters and the more you have the greater resources you can put into making medalists. I quickly abandoned it because it doesn't really work that way. What you'd want to know would be how much money each country spent on their olympics programs, but that's not readily available.

Final Results.

So the US wins because Communism is wrong. Money mouth

No. China wins because they own a fifth of our debt.

I still say when the government is allowed to harvest 5 year olds and train them mercilessly to compete, they get docked some quality points.

at least three   four :)

Agrees ^^^

*Look at the UK in fourth place! makes such a nice change*
