OMG I Hate Dieting!!!
And I have failed at them all. Everything from Weight Watchers, to "The Rice Diet". Some were complete wastes of time, some got off to a good start. But all failed in the end.
I am hoping that other members of "The 100 Pounder Club" will give some examples of there dieting disasters. let's hear it folks!! we are all among friends here!!!
Back (waaaayyyyyy back) when I was a beautiful young teenager, I thought I was fat and I went to a diet clinic that was one step away from being a cult, and screwed up my metabolism and eating habits with an extreme low-fat diet, and charged me through the nose for the priviledge. Of course I fell off it eventually, what teenager can hate chips or french fries or ice cream forever? And the 30 lbs I lost came back with a vengeance, and eventually multiplied their forces by 6 lol....I am still a little bitter can you tell.
After that I also tried WW, and occasional flirtations with other crash diets....now at 37 I finally get it. Diets don't work, but that does NOT mean go ahead and eat/drink whatever you want. I finally understand the concept of moderation and nutrition!
I've had a hectic lifestyle, pretty much forced inactivity (Worked at a computer), a wonderful husband who doesn't care what I looked like, my weight just wasn't a priority. I hated being heavy but there were more important things in life. Besides, I liked everything else about myself, it was easy to avoid the mirror.
Years passed and I slowly gained weight though most was put on in my first few years out of High school. I've always been burly, so at first I didn't really notice. I was still fit and strong, but I had gained a Hundred. Crud. I'm approaching 30 fast enough, though I still have some room. I hope to hit my Goa; by my 30th B-day. That's just over a year and a half away.
I joind up at the end of July, I've lost 13 or so lbs just by dropping my really bad soda habit and learning a little better about my calories, I'm seriously motivated, even though my transition has been slow. I miss running, I so want to be able to do it again, but at my current weight I don't dare, my Achilles tendons get stressed.
Good luck. :)
I did weight watchers about 15 years ago. I was really slim and trim. However, I found that WW forced me to concentrate on eating. I was looking for a lifestyle change that would put eating in the background--in it's proper place. I haven't found that yet.
Every once in a while, I find a photo of my skinny WW self. It's kinda creepy, because I've never had a mind picture of myself looking that way. My kids don't believe it was me!
I did WW. I don't it was too different from what i am doing now. the biggest difference i notice is the point conversion thing. trying to figure out how many points i get - and they always seem so small....25 pts for the day (WTF).
when i was 12, my mom put me on a diet of fruit and veggies. i lose like 50lb quickly. but i was skinny fat. and of course i was deprived of anything outside of the diet foods. i was sneaking bread into the bathroom, and other secret eating tricks. once i was off the diet, I gained the 50 back and continued to gain. quickly. that was the worst diet EVER. That's one of the reasons i refuse to restrict myself too much. its all about moderation for me.
"Diet" should be a four letter word!
As a chubby kid, my mom was constantly trying to make me diet. I remember opening my packed lunch at school and being ashamed of the baggie of popcorn I got for a snack.
I've done the cabbage soup diet, the mayo clinic diet, WW and joined the Biggest Loser Club. I've nearly starved myself and eaten only carrots for days. I started smoking! I've taken diet pills, uppers and appetite suppressants.
I've lost and gained more weight than I care to admit.
(What is the rice diet??)
Alright, lets face facts. Since we all have so much to lose I am sure that we have all tried the fads. I personally did NutriSystem last and while it seems to be well balanced it's got a lot of sodium. Also pretty bland but I am a true spice girl and can't leave well enough alone. I toyed with several fads while working with 400+ women in one building - tobasco sauce and lemon juice come to mind - but realize that "diet" and "fad" aren't going to get me lean and mean. I need to count calories to learn portion control. I have just purchased the ChefMD book that really has some sound - but strange - advice. Will let you know how it all goes in the coming months. My ultimate goal is to NOT think about what I eat and how much because it's automatic to make the proper choices. I am definately not there yet.
FYI - SlimQuick may work for some but I'm not one of them!
Well, I can attest to some pretty rediculous diets. I had almost forgotten about the cabbage diet I tried when I was a teenager. I think I lost weight, but it didn't stay off. Does anyone remember aids candies? My mom used to buy them. They were like caramels. Then there was the time when I ate only lettuce salads and ran around the house 50 times every night. I had a well warn path by the end of the summer. I also tried Weight Watchers. It worked for the time I was a member. I lost 20 lbs, but what confused me were the points. It didn't teach me how to eat food, only how to eat food that was already prepared with lower calories. What I need is to know how to prepare my own food and make choices for a lifetime. I've been counting calories since May and its much easier than I remember. What challenges me most now is having a good exercise routine. Total opposite of when I was young and in better shape.
The cabbage soup diet, the peanut butter diet, the grocery store diet, 1000 calorie diet, 1200 calorie diet, 2000 calorie diet, adkins, slim fast, Solutions for Life, And then there's the Richard Simmons diet ...with the little gray box that you stuck calorie cards in and it gave you the amount of each food groups to eat and after eating each food group you closed the little window...I did lose close to 50 pounds on that in one year but once I stopped using the little gray box I quickly gained the weight back. And I'm sure there's a few diets in between the years that I'm forgetting about.

I did them all except the urine from pregnant women shots.....yea...remember that one.
In addition to what you all listed...I did, AYDS, liquid protein.
I'm just tired of it all and feeling sorry for myself today.
I just hate having to be thinking of what am I eating all the time.
I feel like I have tried them all. Up until I was about 21, I was 5'9" and weighed 135 lbs. Because I had a big butt, I thought I was fat. If only J Lo had been popular then.
I was bulemic for a while which really messed with my metabolism. Now, I have a digestive disorder that has messed with my metabolism.
I began really gaining weight after being on the depo prevero (sp?) shot.
Anyway, I have tried WW, Atkins, South Beach, just listening to my body (but I couldn't hear it say anything lol). I have to admit that I have been journaling now for 5 days and this is the longest I have been able to stick to journaling. I am bipolar and this seems to be my new obsession. It is a good one though, so I will take it.

Regarding comomo72 post and looking at pictures of herself when she was skinny and not believing that was her.
I still think of myself as looking skinny, so whenever I do look in a mirror, I try to figure out who that person is. for this reason, I refuse to try on clothes at a store. No way do I want to see myself in a full length mirror. This has assisted in my weigh gain as I have not held myself accountable. Now I will even if I do end up crying my eyes out in a dressing room.

So, I have learned what really works is to concetrate on being more active and adjusting your eating for the lifestyle change. A true life style change is hard for many of us, since it is what we have done or whole life!
So kudos to all of us for using this site and trying to change our lifestyles! - and benefit from a healthier body!
I've been on the dieting rollercoaster most of my life. At one point, quite a few years ago, I lost 80 pounds. After lots of life upheavals -- and too much pizza -- I gained it back plus a bunch more. Eventually, I wound up at 350 pounds. On New Year's Day of 2004, I went on my own plan, which I called the "ABC Nutrition Plan." I lost 170 pounds. Great, right? If only it stayed off! After more life upheavals I've wound up back at 300, so I'm starting over. Why, oh, WHY didn't I pay attention! ARGH! I'm so angry at myself I could scream. It took over two years to lose all that weight and I SWORE I'd never gain it back. WRONG! Has anyone else been in these shoes??
I tried the Loose 12 pounds in 3 weeks Celebrity Fit Club Fat Smash Diet by Dr. Ian and it was soooo restrictive. I tried it for a week and a half and I was literally hungry every single day. My stomach was always growling and I was constantly thinking about food. I felt like I was going to DIE of torture and semi-starvation. The one good thing that it did was shrink my stomach. I get full quicker after I eat now - and yeah, I lost 5 pounds. However, I dreamed about cheating so much until- finally- I did. Isn't there a diet out there that will keep me satisfied AND help me loose weight? help!
Every diet works. It's the sticking to the diet where we fail. I have no doubt that we will all lose the weight if we apply the advice of the site over a long period of time.
My problem has been that I can forget that I'm on a diet or my wife will buy me a Whopper meal while she's out or order a pizza. Same at work with all the pot luck dinners.
The worst diet for me was atkins. I lost 90lbs in about 6mos but then over the next year I gained 110 pounds. I started putting the weight back on as soon as I started eating carbs.
This diet !!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am on has worked so far for me although I have tried them all at one time in my life.
This diet I have is not a diet but a real wake up call by being admitted to hospital and due to my illness must only eat low fat foods or real pain will comnence.
I have simply bought fruit and veg that would shock a farmer and if I feel hungry grab a bit and munch at it. The pangs of I want something nice like crisps or chocolate or a take away are still there but after the experience I have had the thought of going through that again seems to be keeping me away from them at present.
I have 2 concerns - I am not eating alot of carbs and my energy levels are down although I have found a bean salad is great for energy in the middle of a day- any advice out there??
My other concern is my age they say as you get older it is harder and I am now 40 so that terrifies me!!
Does you health condition allow low fat meats like chicken breast and fish? What about plain yogurt or cottage cheese with fruit? I find those help with energy and satiety. Are you carefully logging your intake? You may not be getting enough calories, there is lots of good advice on cc about how much to eat.
BTW, I am 51, about to be 52, and I have had good success at reducing -- so at 40, you are just a baby! Good luck
Can I lose weight by walking on the treadmill for 20 minutes twice a day?
You will lose weight if your calorie intake is less than your calorie output. By walking on the treadmill for 40 minutes, you (personally... Read more
